In tonight’s The Walking Dead: Dead City episode, betrayal doesn’t just end at a stab in the literally back. Maggie buried the body while Negan was sleeping. He took that as another betrayal because he has nothing and no one anymore. Maggie saw to that. He taunted that her own son no longer wants.
The kid has chosen someone else to play Mommy with and Negan loved every moment in which he made Maggie feel bad about it. He said she’s keeping him alive because he was the one person that made her feel better about her own life. He was the worst person she knew. And so Negan pointed out that she was no prize either because her life was a crap pile.
Maggie finally had enough of his mouth. She handed him the knife. She gave him a once in a lifetime opportunity of stabbing her back. It has a ten second window.
She was counting down as Negan genuinely considered it when they were found. There was wanted fliers all over the city of them. There were drawn with incredible likeness. The New Babylon people were looking for them. They were wanted dead or alive. The two siblings that found Maggie and Negan were hoping to use that them to negotiate.
The siblings were Renata and Luis. Maggie guessed that they were siblings before they confirmed it. Renata even asked Maggie if Negan was her brother because those two were fighting like siblings when they came across them. One pair had knives. The other had guns.
The real siblings ended up winning in that moment of whether to fight or submit. Renata and Luis were taking Maggie and Negan to whoever put out the reward when they ran across Maggie’s boy, Hershel. Hershel called out for his mom just seconds before a bomb went off.
The bomb disturbed everything. Negan and Maggie took shelter in a basement. They were followed by several of the walking dead. Their hands were still tied yet they managed to fight them off. Hershel soon joined them. Even the siblings themselves eventually came and they brought the Croat.
The Croat was injured. The siblings could’ve left him to die. They didn’t because they were trying to save a baby. The Croat had been running things in that city not that long ago. They now needed him to save a baby’s life. Its why they abducted Negan and Maggie in the first place.
Four months ago, Renata was celebrating with her family. It didn’t matter that the world mostly belonged to the undead. It didn’t matter that they were living under The Croat’s dictatorship. The family was celebrating in honor of new life. The siblings had a brother. He and his wife were about to have a baby.
It was all going well until the Croat broke in. He demanded that Renata follow the deal like planned. Whatever this deal was – it wasn’t discussed at first. It was also rejected by Renata so the Croat had to give her a lesson.
No true dictatorship can stand if questioned. The Croat killed their uncle. He then killed their brother who was just celebrating the pregnancy. The Croat probably would’ve killed them all if Renata hadn’t threatened to kill them all.
The dictator left with his goons and Renata tried to move on with her family, but it doesn’t look like her sister-in-law will make it full-term. She was going into labor. Luis was a doctor. He needed supplies if they were going to save the last bit of their brother. And so they needed the Croat.
The Croat knew where the oxygen tanks were. He knew how to get his hands onto either items as well. They needed him so Renata stopped her brother from killing him. Several times! She kept reminding him of the bigger picture and so the Croat got to talking. He said he had an extra tank buried.
He also mentioned that there were plans to set them up for the rest of their lives buried there too. The Croat’s one demand was that he’d go with them. He took an injury during the explosion. He was bleeding out. He needed to see his life’s work one last time.
Maggie agreed to help the siblings. She was going to make up the numbers. The same goes for her son who claimed to have seen the light about that sociopath. They needed more. Maggie asked Negan to help out as well. Negan pretty much wrote off the baby as dead. He went upstairs where he found a bar and another living person.
The bar was the bottom floor of the motel. The bartender had practically turned it into his fortress. He also had a couple of zombies stuck to stools in his bar. It turns out they had been keeping him company for a long time.
The bartender chose to stay. Negan figured he had nothing to lose so he went with the others. It ended up being Negan who finally put the Croat out of his misery. He was dying anyways.
The one good thing he ever did was show them how to save Yvette’s baby. Even their late brother Chucho played a part. They had needed methane. They never got rid of Chucho’s body. Luis couldn’t bring himself to do it before then. He took his brother’s head. He used it to provide energy to the building. They were able to save the baby with his help.
Once that was done, Renata offered to let them stay. She said the Croat wasn’t wrong about the island. It could be a fortress if you let it. They were surrounded by water.
They had fertile fields. New Babylon was considered falling apart. The Croat had set off explosions that shook them to their core. They were even questioning their boss lady. She didn’t rule like the Croat so she didn’t kill them for their doubts. She instead pointed out that every following began with the broken. And that’s exactly who most of her followers were.
Maggie took Renata up on her offer. She and her son were staying with them in the hospital they outfitted. They lacked muscle. Maggie agreed to be theirs. Negan did go back to that bar with the creepy bartender.
Only he’ll still be involved. He and Maggie have somehow learned to trauma bond what with everything they’ve been through.
But something says New York wasn’t going to stay peaceful for long.
