In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Intelligence was back! However, their break has forced Torres’s demons to return. The same demons that weren’t letting him sleep and that he was doing his best to run from. He was keeping busy. He worked all hours he could. He worked out when he wasn’t at work. He still made time to be with his mom.
He still goes to church with her. It just wasn’t enough to bring him peace. He was at home one night when a family friend came in begging for help. Her name is Brenda. She said she was supposed to pick up her husband from work and that she saw three man grab him and put him in a white van. She couldn’t see the men’s faces. They were masks covering them.
Brenda called 911 to report what happened. She waited thirty minutes and no cops showed. She then went to Torres because she knew he wasn’t just a cop. He knew their family. He knew that they wouldn’t make anything up. Brenda was still talking to him when she got an alert from their bank.
Her husband had made a withdrawal of nineteen hundred dollars. They couldn’t take out more than two thousand at a time from the. As was the case with most ATMs. The kidnappers grabbed Ivan Alvarez at night to make a withdrawal at 11:48 pm and they were going to use him to make another withdrawal at midnight.
Torres spotted the second withdrawal. He went to the ATM to check it out. He had already called backup. He saw Ivan and he approached him. Unfortunately, the kidnappers were still with him.
They tried to knock out Torres. He put up a fight. He was thrown into a glass window and passed out from blood loss due to the slash to his arm. He woke up when Voight got there. Torres had to get checked out by paramedics. He also refused medication. He didn’t want to take anything that might put him back in a darker place.
Torres’s involvement made this an Intelligence case. Voight and his team questioned everyone in the area. They found out this was a flash kidnapping. These people would grab someone with money and slowly bleed them dry. It was called the Millionaire’s tour by the locals because Ivan wasn’t the first one.
There’s been about five cases so far. The cops in that area didn’t care. They were suffering from budget cuts. They essentially wrote off Pilsen to save money. That community was told they couldn’t depend on the cops and Ivan’s wife no longer wanted Torres’s help.
These kidnappers grab people as a part of a low risk operation. Ivan’s case was no longer low risk. They were looking for a big payday and they might kill Ivan at the end of it. They couldn’t use him to make ATM withdrawals anymore. They could only use Brenda. She and her husband owned a supermarket in that neighborhood. They were well-off. They contacted Brenda and Torres found out about it. He tried to convince her to let cops help. She couldn’t do it. She said cops didn’t help people from their area. She waited thirty minutes and they never showed.
Brenda had a point. The cops still tracked her phone. They saw she was messaged from a burner phone. They demanded twenty grand to return her husband. The cops knew that they were never going to return Ivan. It was just Brenda that still had hope. Brenda followed their directions. She got the duffle bag. She filled it with money. She went to the food market to make the exchange and it wasn’t until she was there that was no exchange. The man just wanted the money. He didn’t bring Ivan with him. The men never planned on letting him live.
The man that tried to get the money from Brenda was getting rough with her. A good Samaritan tried to step in. The kidnapper pulled a gun and so the cops were forced to take action. They killed one of the kidnappers. He had nothing on him to help them find where Ivan was. He did have car keys. He had keys to a car that matched the description from another victim. One of the other victims was transferred to four detectives and repeatedly asked about gang affiliations. And realized he was never going to get justice because the cops didn’t even see him as human.
Torres and Burgess went back to that victim. They spoke to him again. He gave them details that helped them find out where the victims were being stashed. It was an old paper mill. There, they found Ivan’s body. He was killed long before the drop off. The white van that grabbed him was spotted nearby. They found the driver and he was Spanish himself. He wasn’t answering any questions. Until Torres spoke to him. Torres didn’t try to bond with the guy using Spanish. He merely reminded him that he’d eat the first degree murder charge all by himself if he didn’t talk.
The perp wasn’t like the others. He lived in a great neighborhood. He had a degree and was a CPA. Then he started spending money on the ponies and didn’t have enough for his kid. He couldn’t steal from his clients that fast. He stole from a community he knew wouldn’t turn to the police. He got in bed with racists. One of said racists killed Ivan. His name is Mike Allard. His sole surviving partner told the cops where to find Allard in the hopes of a deal and it turns out Torres never promised him one.
Torres would go on to arrest the shooter. The guy made a quip about Torres knowing English. He was a racist and so that was his real motive from stealing from Pilsen. Torres was tempted to kill him, but he never got the chance and his wound reopened. Torres has been messing with that too to punish himself for losing Ivan. Breaking the news to Brenda was the hardest part.
He went out for a drink at a bar and he ran into tattooist that helped with the case. She also offered to help him heal another way.
THE END!
