RECAP:

Daniel asks what the hell this is that Max has brought him and he says it’s a croissant and he thought he may have developed a liking for them in Paris. Daniel reminds him he doesn’t eat white flour and Max calls himself an idiot and says he probably doesn’t want a reminder of the place he got his heart ripped out. Max is happy he’s back. Donnie brings Kate breakfast in bed and says Linda is starting out in court so he can come late.

She pours her cereal and finds a ring pop to celebrate their engagement and says it’s gorgeous. He asks when she wants to get married and she says 12:30. She says Judge Scanlon can do it on their lunch break. She says they’ve already been married and don’t need to register so he agrees to 12:30. He gets a call and is surprised. He says the expert witness has appendicitis and they won’t get a continuance.

Daniel teaches a class and talks about how one offhand comment can set you off because the brain is hard wired to focus on the negative. He says we can use train our brain to overcome the negative bias and how bad experiences affect us. He says happy may be a choice. Paul talks to him after class and is concerned. He says he wants him to go play putt putt with him. Daniel says golf in any size is pointless. He tells Paul not to call him Danny Boy and says he has plans.

Donnie is prepping Daniel on the case. He shows him the file on Dunham, a guy who lured girls to Chicago, beat and drugged them and forced them into prostitution. He says only one girl will testify against Cyrus. Daniel says the others seem to have Stockholm Syndrome and says that he needs him as an expert witness to talk about the syndrome.

Linda questions him about Stockholm Syndrome. He says the affects can linger for months or years. Linda looks like she’s wavering then collapses and Donnie says to call an ambulance. Daniel touches her back and says she’s been shot. They take her out and Daniel says that Linda didn’t know she’d been shot. He says he thinks she has congenital analgesia where you don’t properly feel pain. He rattles off a list of symptoms she demonstrated.

Donnie says even if you don’t feel the pain, you would notice the impact. Sepsis sits in after a few hours and they know what time she got there so it must have happened before she came in. They find her car and it looks like she was shot there. Kate says it could have happened wherever the car was and not necessarily in that lot. She and Donnie agree they need to move their “appointment” to the next day.

Daniel and Kate comes to see Linda’s sister and she said she didn’t want to be treated differently so she hid it. She says their grandfather died at 38 and they see the apartment is baby proofed. She says the world was a dangerous place for Linda. Kate asks who may have wanted to hurt her and she says no. She says she had a big case she wouldn’t talk about but had brought files home.

Kate says the files are Chicago PD homicide files – all closed. Donnie is having a drink with –. He leaves and Kate says the guy he was just drinking with likely killed Linda. Kae throws a stack of files on Donnie’s desk and says Gerald Rix is the common denominator and there is a common witness on all these cases with a closure rate of 97%.

Donnie says Linda must have been building a case on Rix and that’s why he’s so interested in their investigation of Linda’s murder. This calls into question all of Rix’s case. They need to find the fake witness he was using. Kate and her partner find Nicki Tartullo. He turns to run and whacks his head on a forklift. He says he needs a doctor and she says he has just the one and takes him to Daniel.

She says he has to turn on Rix or he’ll go to jail. He says he wants the same deal the lady lawer offered him. Kate nods and he says he met Rix when he caught him robbing a liquor store. He said he could get off on the robbery charge. He says Rix told the other cops he was his CI. Kate says now he’s going to testify for her. Daniel comes out of the room and a doctor approaches him and says he’s a big fan.

He says he knows he worked with the FBI and heard about the attorney that had the analgesia condition. He asks for tissue samples and Daniel says he’ll try to help. Kate says Donnie needs her back at the court case. She goes to arrest Rix who tells her he doesn’t need a lawyer. She says he’s going away for a long time and he says he’s doing a public service and no one will be convicted.

He tells her the dirt bags he got convicted were guilty of crimes, even if they weren’t the crimes they were convicted of. Rix tells her he has an alibi – he does – it was good. Donnie says maybe he got a low life to shoot Linda. Donnie says Daniel was good in court and that one fo the girls is testifying next. She takes the stand and talks about him promising to get her modeling jobs and paying for her bus ticket.

Donnie asks about him abusing her and the girl says he never did. He reminds her of her grand jury testimony where she said he physically abused her and forced her into prostitution. She says she lied. Donnie asks again about the abuse. She says she loves Cyrus and she cries and says she was mad because she thought he’d been cheating. She apologizes to Cyrus and says she loves him.

Donnie asks if she’s been threatened or coerced and she says she hasn’t. The bad guy’s attorney moves for a directed verdict and the judge finds him not guilty and puts down the gavel. It’s done. Donnie is pissed.

Donnie tries to get Kayla to talk to them but she says she doesn’t want their help. They ask Daniel and he says Stockholm Syndrome isn’t something you just come down with. Donnie says he thinks Cyrus intimidated her. Donnie tells Kate that they’re late for the judge and he says he’ll reschedule again. Daniel asks her about it and she says they’re getting remarried. He asks why the secret and she says with his break-up she didn’t want to salt the wound and he says he’s wound-free.

He goes home and Dr Messier (the anesthesiologist) is there. Daniel turns back to him and he’s in scrubs with a mask and an anesthesia machine and says he’s there to take away his pain. He realizes he’s an hallucination. Natalie is there and says she thinks he’s jealous of Kate and Donnie. He admits he’s a little disappointed but that doesn’t mean Kate has to tiptoe around him like he’s fragile.

Daniel says he’s tired of all of his friends treating him with kid gloves and wishes they would all go away. She says he wants them to go away closer and accuses him of conflicting messages. Natalie mentions Kayla and says when she told Kate and Donnie she wanted to be left alone, they did, but shouldn’t have.

Daniel goes to see Kayla. She says to leave her alone and he says he can’t do that. He says she was brave when she told the truth. She asks him to go away. He says he knows how she feels and tells her he has paranoid schizophrenia and has been afraid most of his life and says the world can be a lonely place. He says when he shuts people out it can mean he’s asking for help.

She opens the door and says she can take care of herself and he says it doesn’t have to be that way. She cries and says Cyrus is free and Daniel says they can lock him back up if she tells the truth. She tells Donnie that Cyrus called from a blocked number and threatened her and asked who did she think killed the lawyer woman and that he can get to her too. Donnie thanks her.

Kate wonders if he really killed Linda or was just using it to scare Kayla. Kate calls Donnie and says Cyrus is dead. He’s got multiple bullet wounds in him and is slumped on a stoop. Donnie shows up at the crime scene and she says he was shot with a 9 mm at close range and it’s an area of gang violence and wonders if it was street justice.

Donnie slaps up a photo of Victor Ochoa – a trafficker that was acquitted and then killed immediately after his release just like Cyrus. Kate says she’s looking for an intersect on their cases. Daniel studies the crime scene photos and then asks if they have other photos of Cyrus’ body. He leafs through them all and shows them S.L. – letters that were tagged near both bodies.

Kate tells T-Bone, the head of the Street Lords, that it’s lame art. He says it’s not his people and shows her his ink and says that’s bona fide. He says that S.L. is from those bitches in tights.

Kate, Donnie and Daniel check out a website for the Shadow League that warns criminals to beware. Kate says it’s hard to believe those people took out two hardened criminals.

They decide to go check out the super-hero school they run. They look at the people learning hand to hand and other skills. The leader says there was a guy that was espousing more aggressive tactics but they had to ask him to leave which sucked because he ran their Facebook page. He says they only knew him as The Ghost.

Kate talks on the phone when a guy in a dark hoodie steps in behind her and throws her against a wall. She screams for help and The Ghost comes to her rescue. Dalton, her faux attacker, arrests him. He tells her that he will haunt her for all eternity. She’s not impressed.

They have The Ghost out of his disguise and in interrogation. Kate notes that he applied to the FBI and police academy but he washed out on psych. Donnie asks how does he choose which bad guys to kill. Kate tells George they know he killed Linda and Victor. He says he delivered justice when they couldn’t. They ask why he killed Victor. He says he met someone online called Painless who said that was her superpower.

He says he and Painless chatted about how the world needed people like them. She emailed him about Victor Ochoa and said he was cut loose because a warrant was mis-filed. He decided to do something about the guy and said Painless gave him the address. He was going to follow him and take some photos but Victor saw him and came at him and he shot him by accident.

He said he knew he had done the right thing even though it was an accident and tagged it with S.L. He says after Ochoa he was fired up and knew this was what they needed to be doing. George says he told Painless what he had done and to ask for another mission. He says he didn’t get an answer so he ran the IP and found out it was Linda.

He says he went to see her. We see him in her back seat telling her not to scream and asking for her next assignment. She said she doesn’t know what he’s talking about and he says he killed the drug dealer for her. She’s confused and then tells him to get out of her car. She asks if he’s insane and says she’ll have him arrested. She calls him a freak and says she’ll take him down for murder.

He says he killed for Painless and she was going to turn him in. They ask about Cyrus and he says he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. He has he has no idea who that is. Messier is there and says George is in pain too. Daniel tells him he doesn’t need anesthesia. He says Napoleon Messier is a ridiculous name and Daniel says it’s an anagram. He scribbles it on the window and looks at it. He plays with it mentally and it says – one more painless. He knocks on the window.

Kate comes in and he says George is telling the truth and there’s another killer. She looks at the writing and reminds him they talked about this. They go back to see Linda’s sister Bonnie. She acts ignorant and Kate says she knows him as The Ghost and he knows her as Painless. Daniel says she and Linda both had it and she was the one he was emailing with.

Bonnie says that Linda was upset about Victor’s case and she said she was excited because Victor got what he deserved. She says she cut off communications with George and they tell her that’s what spurred him to kill Linda. They tell her Linda didn’t call the police on George because she figured out he had been talking to Bonnie.

She admits she went to kill Cyrus because she thought he killed Linda. She says it was the first time in her life she stood up and took action. She says she’s not sorry he’s dead. They arrest her. Kate tells Donnie if they hurry they can still do that thing. He says they do. Donnie asks Daniel if he can catch a cab and he says he can then congratulates them and shakes Donnie’s hand.

Messier is there and says he can give him something for that. He says you can’t and says he knows someone who can. Donnie stops Kate and says he can’t marry her like this. She says she wanted to make it painless. He says it getting pushed back was a sign they aren’t supposed to do it like this. He says the first time they got married they eloped and didn’t make a big deal out of it.

He says maybe them not taking it seriously somehow seeped into their marriage. He says he wants to marry her in a church with a priest and their families, a crappy DJ, a long engagement and a registry because their blender sucks. She agrees.

Daniel writes on the board that sticks and stones will break my bones… Then he tells the class that emotional pain can hurt the same as physical pain. He says there are drugs that can eliminate both physical pain and emotional pain. He asks if numbing your pain is always a good thing and says the more we know pain, the more we can appreciate the good feelings.

He says bitterness and anger help us appreciate happiness. He says to appreciate beauty you must acknowledge your pain. He goes to play putt putt with Paul who is thrilled and hugs him when he scores a hoel in one. The super hero squad run off into the night and Bonnie is escorted into a cell.
