Gerard Butler Treated For Cocaine Addiction

We haven’t seen Gerard Butler out and about for a few weeks – and now we know why. The Scottish actor is in rehab for substance abuse which included a nasty cocaine habit.

According to TMZ the 42 year old checked himself into the Betty Ford Center three weeks ago. He’s been battling a number of demons and he finally decided it was time to get professional help… before the addictions spiraled out of control. A nasty surfing accident on the set of a movie at the end of last year left him in a lot of pain. That’s when he developed a heavy dependence on prescription pain medication. The accident almost cost him his life. Celeb Dirty Laundry covered it here Gerard Butler Opens Up About Close Call With Death

His problems with pain management actually go back further. He had trouble in 2006 while shooting 300. So when he wiped out making Of Men And Mavericks in 2011 the pain became unbearable.  Butler turned to prescription drugs so he could continue to work. But he realized they were becoming too much a part of everyday life and admitted he needed to get on top of the situation. So he sought help at the world famous drug clinic in January.

TMZ says prescription drugs aren’t the only problem he’s been dealing with. Sources say the star of The Ugly Truth developed a fondness for cocaine as well. He’s not a coke head but had issues with it. And that was another reason to clean up.

Gerard is expected to check out of the Betty Ford Center later today.
