Selena Gomez not a Christian? That’s what she says. If the love story of Selena Gomez and boyfriend Justin Bieber didn’t exist, this would not be news. Lots of celebs aren’t Christian. But they are a couple, and Justin has a tattoo of Jesus on his calf, which shows quite a bit of, dare I say, belief, love, respect, devotion, and so on.
In a recent interview for her new film, Spring Breakers, which is not a fun teen comedy about some kids at the beach, but a more serious film about law-breaking teens, Selena opened up about her first meeting with the director, Harmony Korine.
She explains that she was meeting the director at his house, and that he was worried some of the artwork he owned would freak her out, or possibly scare her away from the role. Selena is quoted as having calmed his worries by saying, “He thought I was like this super, super Christian. And he put away all of this art. I was like, ‘If I was a Christian girl, I probably wouldn’t have done this movie with him.'”
This is interesting to me for three reasons.
1. I doubt this will come as a shock to Justin, as they’ve probably talked about their faiths already. But now that it’s public, will he want to find a girlfriend who is willing to get matching Jesus tattoos? (Maybe Demi Lovato?)
2. Selena sort of implies that the role is too intense for a Christian. Now, while she isn’t Christian, that doesn’t make her a homicidal monster, call girl, or amoral weed. So, what would have changed her mind if she were a belieber? I guess we’ll have to find out in the movie!
3. Do all actors let their religious beliefs (or lack of) decide which roles to take? Can’t decide if that is sort of antithetic to the art of acting! Thoughts?
I’m sure that tens of millions of Christian Beliebers are screaming for Selena’s removal. Now there is a world of difference between saying ‘I’m not Christian’ and ‘I’m not a Christian.’ If Selena were simple not Christian we’d have to ask something like ‘is she Jewish maybe?’ But Selena said she was not A Christian – this means lots more… Selena has made a statement that says she rejects the teachings that are an inseparable part of Justin’s worldview. It’s no secret that she is hated by Justin’s mobbing fans. Let’s keep away from any violent letters or acts! It’s they’re relationship and they’ll figure it out!
Editor’s note – Now there is a world of difference between saying ‘I’m not Christian’ and saying ‘I’m not a Christian.’ If Selena were simply not Christian we’d have to ask something like ‘is she Jewish maybe?’ But Selena said she was not A Christian – this means much more. Selena has made a statement that says she rejects the teachings that are an inseparable part of Justin’s worldview – Christianity inspires Justin and makes him who he is – yes Bieber is a Believer! We know why Bertrand Russell was not a Christian but we doubt that Selena is motivated similarly. This is serious – is Selena trying to push Justin away?
