James Gandolfini Funeral Scheduled For Thursday, Expecting Major Hollywood Turnout 0624

Hollywood is still mourning James Gandolfini’s death but his body has finally been returned home to his native New Jersey late last night. Gandolfini died last Wednesday from a heart attack while vacationing with his son in Italy. ABC News reports the funeral will be held this Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

It’s kinda crazy but I’ve learned so much more about the actor over the past week and it’s just making his death that much worse. Did you know he and John Travolta were friends? I knew they were in a lot of movies together but I never pegged them to have much in common other than the fact that they are both from New Jersey. But it seems they struck up a true friendship and James was really there for him when Travolta lost his oldest son a couple years ago. While promoting his new movie on Good Morning America, Travolta recounted that time and said James refused to leave his side until he knew for sure Travolta could handle being alone. That’s beyond friendship, right? That’s just such a lovely story and I’m happy Travolta shared it. So many people only think of Gandolfini as this tough, big drinking Sopranos guy with demons but he, like us all I guess, was layered and it’s important people recognize that. Travolta is expected at the funeral along with many other Hollywood A-listers. I wonder if Brad Pitt will go. He’s issued a statement saying he was “gutted” by the loss.

It’s safe to assume the Sopranos contingent will be there. You know who I haven’t heard about? Uncle Junior a.k.a  Dominic Chianese. Has anyone seen a statement from him? I can take the tears from most. I can take them from Edie Falco, Lorraine Braco, his wife and family and maybe even Tony Sirico but Uncle June… forget about it. I hope I don’t see that. But I do hope he sings. How fitting would that be? I don’t need to hear it or even hear about it. These things are personal, and I don’t want to be a total piece of shit voyeur, but in my mind he sings at James Gandolfini’s funeral or wake. That would be the most beautiful tribute, yes?
