SAG Awards Nominations Announced: "12 Years A Slave" Leads The Pack

The nominations for the SAG Awards were announced earlier this morning, with 12 Year A Slave leading the pack with a whopping of seven nominations, including Best Acting Ensemble – a usual harbinger of Best Picture at the Oscars.

Both 12 Years and Lee DanielsThe Butler received seven nominations a piece, and most of their casts were on the nominee list as well. Considering that the SAGs are one of the more accurate precursors to the Oscars, these lists could be very similar to what you could be seeing come Oscar nomination morning.

12 Years received a nomination for Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofer, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o. All three are locks for nominations come Oscar night, and it’s clear that 12 Years a Slave is a favorite among the SAG community. However, the only one in that category that has a solid shot of winning is Lupita, who’s in a tough category but she has the best chance of winning. She’s up against The Butler’s Oprah Winfrey, another favorite, and perennial SAG favorite Jennifer Lawrence, who won the Best Actress SAG last year. Lawrence is the only one of the American Hustle cast to get singled out for an acting nomination, even though the film itself was honored with an acting ensemble nod. Basically, that means that although most of the cast will probably be shut out for individual honors, the film will likely get nominated for Best Picture and maybe even Best Director. And don’t count out Lawrence to beat Nyong’o, Winfrey, and Julia Roberts [August: Osage County] – the voters love Lawrence, although the backlash will be very, very extreme if she wins back-to-back awards.

The love for August: Osage County and The Butler is also bit left-field, but that actually shouldn’t be that surprising. Although both films might not fare well as on Oscar night, they both also have fantastic ensemble casts and thus they appeal to the actors more than anybody else.

This is actually the most diverse the nominee list has been in ages, for which you can thank Hollywood for finally opening its eyes, at least a little bit. We have Forest Whitaker for The Butler and Chiwetel Ejiofer for Twelve Years in the Best Actor character, a surprise nomination for Barkhad Abdi in Captain Phillips, and Lupita Nyong’o and Oprah Winfrey for Best Supporting Actress. Then, we also have two diverse casts nominated for Best Ensemble: 12 Years A Slave and The Butler.
