Stefan reads from one of his old journals and still can’t remember who he is. He doesn’t even know that he’s a vampire. He’s with Damon and still can’t remember his brother. Damon tells him that his memory was erased by a 2000 year old witch. Stefan says Damon drives like a 2000 year old woman and he says he thinks he must have been the fun brother and Damon the safe one. Ha!
To prove his point, Damon crashes the car – totals it spectacularly so that Stefan can see he can’t be broken. Then he corrects himself and says Damon must have been the fun one.

Caroline and Elena talk about Stefan’s amnesia. C has been busy researching it so she can help Stefan and try to talk her way back into Dr. Maxfield’s advanced class. She’s also been studying with Jessie – the hot guy who is Dr. M’s lab assistant. C says she’s bringing Jessie to Mystic Falls’ bell ringing celebration that night. That’s where you ring the bell and toast your dead loved ones.

Stefan and Damon sit in the bar listening to the drunken bell ringing toasts. He’s intrigued. Damon says it’s a leftover of when people would be buried with a string tied to their toe with a bell on it so in case they were buried not quite dead they could ring the bell and be dug up. The waitress bends over them to take an order and Stefan stares at her neck vein lustily. He’s ready to dive in but Damon tells him that’s not good vamp behavior.

Stefan says that since he has no guilt over killing their father maybe he can drink blood without turning into the ripper. Elena shows up and Stefan asks her name. She asks why Damon hasn’t told him about her and he says 200 years is a lot of history to explain.

Bonnie shows up when Jeremy is working out. She says watching him work out is entertaining to her since she doesn’t have Netflix on the other side. She tells him she can’t get Stefan’s memory back because she’s on the other side. Jer says they need to tell their friends she’s dead so they can stop expecting her to help.

Matt calls Jeremy and tells him he’s freaking out. Jer comes over and Matt tells him he woke up covered in blood and found an ornamental knife with him. Jeremy thinks it’s something to do with dying with the Gilbert ring on but Matt thinks it’s more to do with whatever reason prevented Silas from mind controlling him. Matt says Silas saw something or someone that the gypsy girl put in his head. Matt has set up cameras all over the house to try and figure out why he’s losing time. Matt asks where Bonnie is because he wants her help. Jer makes an excuse and says she’s in DC. Matt says he’s scared and needs her help.

Elena corners Damon about his progress with amnesiac Stefan. Elena wants to call Bonnie and Damon tells her he’s already tried that. Damon says to leave Stefan be for now and let him enjoy being drunk and guilt free. Then they realize that he’s left the bar and they also don’t see the waitress he was checking out. She’s in the bathroom and Stefan is there. He compels her not to scream or move. He tells her he doesn’t want to hurt her. He takes her face and turns her cheek and looks at her neck longingly. He says he doesn’t want to kill her but the urge to have her blood is more powerful. As he starts to bite, Damon rushes in and body slams him into the wall and tells him to get it together.

At the graveyard, Damon takes Stefan around to show him some graves of people he’s killed. Damon wants to contain Stefan until he gets the bloodlust under control in case the ripper thing is genetic. Damon gets a text and says he has to go and leaves Elena to babysit Stefan. Damon had rattled off the list of all their family members that either he or Stefan had killed and Stefan asks Elena if she’s had better luck with family. She rattles off the list of all of her dead adopted and biological family members to show she’s not any better off. She tells him that Jeremy was dead but now isn’t. Stefan looks at her and asks how he doesn’t remember her since she’s smart, pretty and the strongest woman in the world. Stefan asks her if they met in a cemetery and she laughs and says officially it was elsewhere but takes him to the spot.

Damon calls Jeremy and he tells him he has to meet him alone for him to tell him where Bonnie is.

She brings Stefan to the school but it’s not ringing any bells for him. They reenact their meeting in the hallway. She tells him they literally ran into each other. Stefan tells her that recreating the time they met won’t magically bring back his memories. She says seeing him like this is strange.

An athlete comes in from the field with a bloody injury on his head and Elena drags him out to avoid trouble. She takes him back outside and tells him to close his eyes. She leaps to the top of the building and tells him the view is great. He asks how he can get up there and she tells him to push up hard. He does it! He tells her it was amazing and she tells him that once he leaped her up to the top of a Ferris Wheel back when she was human. He asks if that’s when they dated and she asks if Damon told him and he says he figured it out because he’s not an idiot.

Stefan asks if him being a violent killer broke them up and she tells him he was compassionate and kind. She reveals that what broke them up was her becoming a vampire and how it changed her. He asks how it happened and she says she’ll show him. She leaps down off the school building.

At the bell ringing celebration, Caroline and Jessie sit in the graveyard and he helps her study for an upcoming test. He tells her that Maxfield should definitely let her in the advanced class – he’s impressed. Jessie tells her he thinks someone is doing a keg stand on his grandad’s grave and then sneaks a kiss.

Jeremy reveals to Damon that Bonnie can’t help any of them. He reminds him that he was dead. He tells him that magic finds a balance. Jer says he’s not supposed to be there. Damon finally gets it. Jer says bringing someone back from the dead always comes at a cost. Damon doesn’t want to believe it. Bonnie is there and begs him not to say it. Damon tells him it’s going to pull apart Elena’s life. Damon tells him he shouldn’t have said. Jer says people need to know. Damon hugs him tight (wow!) and strokes his head to comfort him.

At the bridge where she died, Stefan asks Elena how she could have two catastrophic accidents on the same bridge. He asks her why he didn’t save her life the second time and she says it’s because he did what she asked and saved her friend Matt’s life instead. He tells her it’s working. She asks if he’s remembering and he says no – it’s just distracting him from the blood lust. He tells her he could see why he was different around her. He tells her he saw the monster he could be today in the mirror with the girl.

She says she has never been afraid with him and touched his face and told him not to hide from her. They almost kiss and she tells him she’s with Damon. He reiterates – you’re with my brother. He asks why they didn’t think that was something he should know. She says they weren’t hiding it from him. She turns away frustrated and he tells her his blood lust is back. She turns back around but he’s gone – – and he’s hungry!

Matt wakes and goes to check the camera that was watching him on the sofa. He fast forwards and sees himself get up and answer the phone. He starts talking in a foreign language then he gets up and takes the ceremonial knife and walks toward the camera. He speaks into the lens. Hello Matt Donovan- I am the passenger inside you and one day his friends will come looking for this blade. He tells him to protect it at all costs. He cuts his hand deep and says – or this will be your throat!

Damon calls Elena and she asks where he is. He tells her he’s at home and really needs to talk to her. Elena says Stefan took off after she told him about them and that he was hungry. She’s worried because the graveyard is full of people. Caroline approaches him and he calls her his best friend. She asks if he remembers her and he says he’s been studying photos. She asks how he is and he says he’s drunk and in the midst of ripper hunger. Jessie approaches and he tells him that he has a paper cut on his hand and he wants to rip his hand off. She compels Jessie to go hide and says she’ll find him.

She tells Stefan that he doesn’t eat people and he asks if she has any blood bags and she says there are some in her car. She tells him to come with her but then he disappears. Jessie calls Caroline and leaves a message saying he’s in a crypt at the cemetery and doesn’t know why. Then Stefan is there in full bloodlust mode and chomps down on Jessie’s neck!

[8:59:59 PM] Rachel Rowan: Stefan bites Jessie but then lets him go and tells him that wasn’t so bad since he was able to stop. Jessie asks what he is and Stefan says he’s a ripper and that means he doesn’t stop eating until he rips someone’s head off. Stefan says he’s not supposed to rip because he’s a good person but that hasn’t gotten him anywhere. He says he has no memory and his brother took his girlfriend and she let him take her so there doesn’t seem to be a point in being good. He lunges at Jessie again, mouth wide open, fangs out all bloody and scary!

Jer knocks on Matt’s door. He say she needs to tell him something.

Caroline comes in and drags him off of Jessie and says he’s better than this. She tells him he’s not that person. He says he has to leave and runs off. Jessie lays on the floor in a pool of blood. She opens her vein and tells Jessie to drink. He suckles at her wrist as she apologizes for getting him into this.

Elena and Damon find Stefan busy burning his journals. Damon asks if he’s sure he wants to do that. Stefan says he doesn’t want to be that person, doesn’t want to live in that house or be supportive of Elena. He says he won’t go on a binge because Caroline is helping and he trusts her. He stalks out as Damon says he thinks they just got dumped.

Elena says she needs Bonnie and that she’ll figure something out. Damon says Bonnie can’t help them. He tells her that she’s dead and that he’s sorry. Elena is in complete shock.

Caroline finds Stefan and asks how he’s feeling. He says is better but that only means he hasn’t killed anyone since he last saw her. He says he’s been wandering and thinking. He asks what’s wrong with her and she tells him she found out that Bonnie – their friend – is dead. He asks what happened and she says she doesn’t want to come up with an answer or think about because she’ll cry and never stop. They sit in the old crypt side by side and he says he wishes he could remember her.

Caroline says part of her wishes she could trade places with him because it wouldn’t hurt so much without the memories. He tells her it will be okay. She says it’s not because she won’t ever see her again and has no idea where Tyler is and now she has to learn to move on without them but all she has is sadness and anger and… Stefan says that she also has him because she’s been there for him he wants to be there for her. He takes her hand.

Damon finds Elena looking through her clothes and she says she burned her house down with all her funeral clothes in it. She cries and says Stefan is lost to them and Bonnie gave up her life so she could have her brother back. She cries hard as Damon holds her and says he’s so sorry. Aww. Damon is so sweet. Bonnie watches through the window.

All the friends come dressed in black to say goodbye to Bonnie. They leave tributes to her in the woods. The bell, flowers, a photo. Caroline, Matt, Jeremy and Elena are distraught. Matt leaves his whistle. Elena leaves feathers. She and Carolina cry and hold each other. Damon leaves a book. Bonnie tells Jeremy that it’s okay – she says they need it and she needs it. Jer walks to the stump and takes the bell and says we ring this bell in honor of Bonnie and in remembrance of her. He rings it. He tells them he’s not sure what else to say. Bonnie tells him to tell them that she’s not going anywhere and has been there the whole time.

Caroline and Elena stare at Jeremy and he tells them what she says. He tells them as she says that she watched them have the summer of their lives, saw them happy and that they can have a normal life and that everyone will find their way. Bonnie tells Elena to go back to college and live it up. She tells Matt he didn’t do anything wrong and that she would have emailed him back every day if she could and she misses him. She tells Caroline she watched her decorate their dorm room like her life depended on it. Tyler picks that moment to show up and she runs to him and he holds her. He has a white rose he lays down in tribute to Bonnie. She tells Jeremy this is what she wanted – for all of them to be okay. Jer holds out his hand for her to hold. Damon holds Elena. Tyler holds Caroline.

Dr. Maxfield checks Jessie’s vitals and tells him they’re normal. He says he has memory loss and Dr. M tells him he has vampire blood in his system and that he was either injured and healed by the blood or someone is trying to turn him. He tells him that him having the blood in his system is good because it’s step one to creating a vampire. He tells him this is step two and injects him with something that kills him!
