On tonight’s pre-Christmas special of “Chasing Life”, April’s grandparents (on her paternal side) have come for a visit. And, unfortunately, they’re not the pleasant people to see. Most especially for a cancer patient that’s in need of some uplifting.

April’s grandparents aren’t bad people but they tend to be judgmental and pushy. Basically like any other grandparent. Just in this case, April can’t fight back because of the chemo.

April had already been dumped by Dominic and nearly scared herself to death with worrying about Leo. So what she really needed from her grandparents was their love and not much else. However, once they did come to see her, April was then worried about letting them seeing her as sick as she is.

As it turns out, she’s losing her hair faster than she thought she would and seeing as she’s the one that generally looks after her family – she did what she normally does – she hid her feelings and the chunks of hair that kept falling out. But, thankfully, later turned to her sister to lean on.

Brenna was allowed to see how much the chemo was affecting her sister. And because she didn’t want April sinking more into depression than she already is – Brenna decided she was going to throw a Christmas celebration just for her.

April loves Christmas and she’ll probably will love the surprise. Though creating Christmas is actually harder than Brenna thought it would be. For instance, no one is selling Christmas decorations at the moment and the old family’s decorations were recently thrown out because her other grandmother had gotten into her head the house was secretly infested with bed bugs.

Meanwhile at the hospital, April and Beth took the first steps in cutting April’s hair. April had originally thought she should simply shave it all off. But Beth convinced to start cutting off inches by inches. So rather than look like G.I. Jane right off – Beth styled her hair into a fashionable 50s bob.

And she also included the makeup to match the hair.

Though the makeover doesn’t change April’s latest test results. It seems she’s not doing as well as the doctor had hoped. So April’s condition now has to be carefully monitored. Meaning, not only does April have to wear a face mask but she also can’t see her mom.

Sara had developed a bit of a cold, a minor thing, and because of that she couldn’t visit her daughter during April’s last few days of round one of chemo.

Sara did get to skype April. Though her in-laws kept interfering. They want to put in their own two sense and frankly their behavior was wearing on their son George. He could take them coming after him. Yet he couldn’t stand it when they targeted April, Brenna, and Sara for that matter.

His mother was upset when she heard that Brenna was bisexual. But that’s because she felt like she was the last to know. And when they went in on George for still being single – he told them to stop comparing him to their golden boy Thomas. Then he told them why Thomas wasn’t as perfect as they thought.

Yet his parents weren’t all that surprised by what George had to say. It appears they knew about Thomas’s affair and the secret daughter. Though they didn’t feel it was their place to tell Sara.  After all Thomas was their child and he had entrusted them with a secret.

So after listening to them all fight and be petty – April then told them she didn’t want to see them in all in the same room again. It was sick of the fighting and she knew she didn’t need that in her life right now. Hence she called off Christmas without having a clue there was going to be one in the first place.

But Leo did cheer her up at the house. Apparently it takes more than merely making the decision to have surgery to actually do surgery. He has to undergo several tests and signs what looks like a hundred forms. So while he’s stuck at the hospital, he and April have been living out his bucket lists.

She helped him pretend he was a kid again by playing with a couple games and he in turn shaved her head when she asked. Then she shaved his head for him.

When April had finished being Marilyn, she had moved on to styling her like a punk rocker. Until, at the end of the day, she felt comfortable enough to shave the whole things. And like Beth had predicted, it was easier trimming it in pieces than saying goodbye all at once.

Though, after she was done with that, she had returned to her hospital room and practically witnessed a Christmas miracle. Her family had talked it over and they had all decided to bench their petty arguments and simply be there for April.

So they gave her Christmas in May. And as she was celebrating with a happily reunited family – Leo did get to have his surgery but he was flatling the last time we saw him!

THE END!
