RECAP: Jennifer Love Hewitt joins the cast of Criminal Minds on tonight’s episode as Agent Kate Callahan. Kate appears to be a strong and slightly off-beat character. Sort of like she and DR. Reid could one day be friends, but her introduction to the team went along smoothly. She was able to come in and was offered a job right away during her first interview with Hotch. So she’s experienced enough to have impressive track record, but can she be enough to fill in vacancy left by both Emily and Blake?
From the start, Kate is thrown in on a tough case. The team has recently been hunting a killer in Bakersfield, California. And a third victim just happened to be found on her first day.

Prior to the third victim, the BAU were only used as consultants. However the situation quickly changed after the third victim. Like the increased media attention for one! It was a shock and awe case after all. Their Unsub has been killing people and cutting them to such extent they’re unidentifiable. But, thankfully, a mistake was made with the third victim.

That woman in question had had previous plastic surgery. And, sure, the UnSub had removed her breast implants himself because he worked out she could be traced by it. Yet, ultimately, the team still used the surgery in their process of elimination. The team was able to trace their victim using merely her body type, ethnicity, and a list of women who has surgery in the past couple of years. So they knew who she was and that ended up helping them in their investigation.

Afterwards, the teams found her legs and even a pair that didn’t belong to her hidden in some suburban dad’s car. And though that was and he was both similarly creepy – the dad wasn’t their Unsub. He was just a buyer with a weird foot fetish.

It seems he found a guy online willing to sell him human legs and didn’t once second guess where the supply came from. So he’s sick, but he’s not a killer. The real killer on the other hand is both. Their analysis of him revealed that he was an outcast. Probably really shy and introverted though unfortunately stuck with looks that were never going to win him any prizes. Then when he did try to come out of his shell and had actually worked up the courage to ask a woman out – she rejected him.

So that fuelled his rage towards women in general. He hates them and wishes to punish them for never seeing his true value. Yet that doesn’t explain why his first kill wasn’t a woman. The team had originally thought that maybe the guy was simply a test run for the Unsub. Hence they were only able to identify him with their Unsub’s help.

Their Unsub had gone to great lengths to frame the first victim as the killer. He planted evidence and left the place littered with damning information. But then he missed his chance at destroying photos which as it turns out proved to be very important.

One of the photos of the guy showed he had an identifying tattoo and because their first victim had some of his skin removed it wasn’t that hard to draw conclusions. Nor was it difficult to question why their Unsub seemed to hate this guy in particular.

His name was Dylan and he appeared to have once been in a relationship with a woman that could pass as the second victim. And after Garcia checked – the girlfriend was reported missing too. Apparently the girlfriend had a restraining order out against their Unsub. She was the one that rejected him.

Luckily, the restraining the order gave them everything they needed to know. The Unsub’s name and the fact he was raised by a single dad that was an abusive schizophrenic. So he was never really given a chance in life. And as for the team, they managed to find him at his childhood home and due to timing – save his latest victim.

But at the end of the day, the new girl was satisfied with a job well done. Kate thought it was odd his last victim was from somewhere outside his comfort zone. Hotch told her not to think about it and then later he looked at the case again. They knew something was off about this case and they couldn’t pinpoint it.

Yet here’s a little secret they don’t know – their Unsub didn’t kidnap the girl himself. He bought her online (where you can apparently get your hands on anything now) from a human auctioning ring!
