Joan Rivers Stops Breathing, Critical Condition: Cardiac or Respiratory Arrest During Surgery

Joan Rivers has been rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York City after she stopped breathing during a surgery for her throat.

More specifically, she was reportedly getting her vocal chords operated on when she went into either cardiac or respiratory arrest. TMZ reports that the emergency call placed to 911 happened at 9:39 AM ET, and the caller said, “We have somebody in either cardiac or respiratory arrest.”

The 81-year-old Rivers hasn’t had any major health complications since her osteoporosis diagnosis more than a decade ago. She’s gone on the record about her health, stating that she eats healthy, exercises, and keeps herself fit and active. Up until now, she seemed to be the picture of robust health, with nary a major health problem. For someone that’s crossing 80 years old, that’s a huge achievement.

However – and even though it’s not clear what caused her to stop breathing – the amount of surgeries she gets done on a regular basis clearly poses a risk for someone at her age. Forget all the plastic surgery – she also gets various other surgeries for her throat, her vocal chords, her body, and her other, smaller issues plaguing her.

Melissa Rivers, Joan Rivers’ daughter, is already rushing to NYC to see her mother. So far, there hasn’t been any updates from TMZ or other websites, which means that Joan’s hanging in there. However, several sources say that she’s not yet stable, and it’s possible that she could actually die. We will continue to update as we receive news about this developing story.
