We see row after row of shrouded bodies – victims of the plague. Bash kicks in a door and they count 12 more corpses. He tells them to wrap the bodies with care. He says they have to give them proper burials so their souls can rest. We see Greer and her fiancee staring at his daughter Yvette’s grave marker. Trumpets sound and Mary and Catherine wait to greet the king. Catherine asks her not to tell Francis she thought she had the plague.

Francis hugs Mary and then asks after Lola. She climbs out with the baby and says she has a son. Bash comes to hug his brother and Francis says he needs him on his council but Bash says it’s a liar’s job and not for him. Francis introduces Louis of Conde to Mary and says he saved them. Mary thanks him and Louis says it was an honor. Mary looks at the girls giggling over the baby and doesn’t seem pleased.

Mary and Francis are in bed and he’s trying to please her. After, he asks her to talk to him and says he left impulsively and came back with Lola’s child. He says he held him and knew he had to be part of his life. He tells Mary that they’ll have children. He reminds her that his father had Bash close. Mary says the eyes of the world are watching to see if she’ll bear an heir for France, Scotland and England.

She says his mother has already guessed and tells him to spend time with his son but not to claim him officially. He agrees. Edward’s father shows up – he tells Catherine he sent his son there since he thought the castle would be safe. Nostradamus tells Mary that Lord Narcisse showed up asking questions and he told him that he had symptoms of plague when he arrived.

Mary thanks him for covering for her and for giving Catherine the fake symptoms. Mary promises to protect him. Lord Narcisse says he needs to know more about his son’s final days. Catherine tries to comfort him but he insists he needs to know more. The Lord is taken down to where his son died and asks if other nobles were sent there.

He looks for his son’s body and tosses a torch. He says to wrap him carefully and hears someone who is alive. They say this person must be immune. Lord Narcisse asks if he saw his son die. He says he’ll get him food and water and then he wants to know what happened to his son. They hold a dance to celebrate Francis’ safe return. Catherine promises an even bigger event for his coronation.

Catherine sees Narcisse and wonders why he’s back with more nobles. The man addresses Francis. He says they will need to pull together after the plague and Narcisse says he comes seeking justice from him. He says his son Edward was murdered while the king was away. He accuses Nostradamus of making a false diagnosis and condemning him to death.

Narcisse says a survivor witnessed it. He says his son was healthy when he was tossed in with sick servants. Mary says Nostradamus may have made a mistake but meant no harm. Narcisse challenges Francis to show that no life can be taken away without impunity. Francis says to take Nostradamus away for questioning.

In their chamber, Mary explains to Francis that Edward killed an entire household of people. Francis asks if she was seen escorting the man to the dungeon and she says yes. Catherine comes in and says she was also a witness and accuses her of poisoning her. Mary says she had to stop her and Catherine says she knows Nostradamus helped him.

Catherine says she made this worse and says Narcisse wants the guards dead too. Francis tells Mary that the plague has given power to Narcisse and the other nobles are watching him. Mary says this was her mistake and she fixed it. Leith works with his farm when Castleroy shows up. He accuses Leith of taking advantage of Yvette. Leith says he had no idea who his daughter was.

Castleroy says his daughter would be alive if not for him. Castleroy punches him and tells him to stay away from his family. Mary comes to see Narcisse and says they need to settle this matter privately. He says he knows she’s responsible but is nearly untouchable as Queen. He says he can reach those who lied to her. She says Edward asked her to murder for her and when he refused he poisoned an entire household.

She says she let her anger get the best of her. Narcisse says he was his son and says she was to marry a Duchess with land. She asks if he was following his orders. She says he told her he was already married and asks why he really wanted Voland dead. Narcisse snaps and says he doesn’t fear her or Francis. He says without them they have no power. He says they are the outside world and surround them.

He says he and the other nobles have decided an example must be set. He says her guards and Nostradamus will be drawn and quartered. She says that’s horrific and he says it will be a lesson to her to never cross him again. Mary tells Francis what he said and he says Catherine has been trying to get Nostradamus free. He asks why she didn’t wait and tells her she was reckless.

She reminds him he murdered an entire family and he says it was a decision she made alone. She says he abandoned her knowingly and left her alone because of her mistakes. She asks why he had to sleep with one of her ladies, her closest friends. She says if he bows to Narcisse now, he’ll always have to. She asks what kind of king he has to be.

She says they need leverage against Narcisse to make it back down. Francis says he may have killed other people to get their land. Francis says he’ll send Bash to investigate and Mary says she’ll look into Voland. She goes to Lord Voland’s chambers to look around. Lola comes in and says she wants to help. Mary is annoyed that Francis talked to her about it.

Lola says she knows this is painful and Mary agrees it must be hard on her too. She asks what she’s named the baby and she says Robert. Mary says she knows it will be best for Lola if Francis claims him. Lola says she just wants to be with her son and Mary says she doesn’t have to hide that from her. Mary finds a letter to Voland from the privy council.

Voland was trying to see the king before he died. Mary asks Lola to find out what Voland wanted to tell Francis in his final hours. Leith finds Greer in his house and asks what she wants. She says she didn’t mean to betray him to Castleroy and says she spoke in anger. She says she acted jealous then tried to cover with Castleroy by telling him what he had said about social climbing.

Greer says she wishes she could turn back time. She says she’s sorry and hopes one day she won’t regret that she loved him. She goes to leave and tells him not to blame himself from Yvette’s death. He tells her to let it be and not cause Castleroy any more pain. He tells her not to come back. Bash goes to talk to someone in a village who confirms that Narcisse murdered. He says there were corpses mixed in with the plague victims.

He says every plague justice suffers and dies. Bash sees a woman in the cemetery. She says she heard the nobles locked themselves in with cakes and fine wine while they had to watch their loved ones rot and die. She says it’s hard enough to get spirits to leave. She says the spirits are there and the door will stay open and the spirits will get to them. She says there will be a reckoning.

Bash says he thinks more than Narcisse are using the plague to kill indiscriminately. Lola shows up and says Voland gave confession before he died to Father Lucien. She and Lola head out to find the priest. Bash says they need Nostradamus alive. He says he knows Francis isn’t a believer but says he has heard the dead is still with them. Bash says the death and injustice left a door open between the worlds.

Bash says if they stay, it can be a problem. He says the dead want the truth revealed. Francis goes to see Catherine and they stand at Henry’s tomb. She asks if he plans to claim Lola’s child and he says he hasn’t decided. She says if he doesn’t claim him, there will always be a distance between them. She says he may never be king but could be a true son to him, perhaps his only child.

Greer finds Castleroy in her chambers and he asks where she was. She admits she went to see Leith. She says he’s wracked with guilt and she tells him she’s completely loyal to him. She says Leith made the vow to social climb in anger. She reminds him that she chose him and he chose her knowing that she had loved another. He says he has to leave for a long time to take care of business. She asks if he’ll be back and he says he doesn’t know.

The priest tells Mary he’s scared of Narcisse. He says Voland and Narcisse were siphoning money off from church tithes and Cardinal Morosini caught them at it. Mary says he must testify to this. He says he can’t repeat it and says Narcisse’s people will kill him. He says the evidence doesn’t exist because it was given in confession.

Narcisse comes and tells Francis that he may not like him, but needs him. He says he kept his father afloat when he bankrupted France in wars. Louis comes to tell Francis that Narcisse is a man who steals from the innocent and murders. He says it may be time to shift the power away from the nobles and back to the king. He tells Francis that when the men are outside at dawn being put to death it will decide what kind of king he’s to be.

Next morning, Nostradamus is tied up to be drawn and quartered (a rope tied to each limb until he’s split in four). Mary comes out and orders the execution stops. Narcisse says she has lost France. She says Voland wrote out his confession and she found it. She says the confession is on the way to the Vatican in the hand of guards. Francis comes out and tells her he has proof.

She is angry that he stole her missives to the France. She says he owes France a just rule. They argue and he tells her she’s not king and tells her to leave and go to their chambers now. Narcisse says he thought he should have married a rich but commoner. Francis orders him to free the guards as a favor to them. He says to manage them and he’ll manage his wife.

Francis says no more bloodshed and Narcisse demands land as satisfaction for his son’s loss. Francis tosses the confessional notes into the fire. He comes to tell Mary their ruse works and says the guards and Nostradamus are free. He says he had to give him some land. We see Narcisse roll onto Leith’s property with a smile. He asks who he is and says Francis gave it to him.

Leith asks why he would take the land away from him and Narcisse says he can ask the king himself since he’s demanded he show up at court. Bash meets with Francis and asks for the role of king’s deputy to uphold the law. He kneels and says he’s nothing until Francis makes him something. Francis says he’s his brother but he appoints Bash his deputy.

Nostradamus is on a horse riding even though he was injured. He asks what she’ll tell Catherine and she says she’ll say he had another vision. Francis finds Mary with his son in the nursery. She says no matter what happens to them nothing can change who they are and what they are. She says the world is cruel to the weak. She tells him to claim the child and give him his name. He says that won’t make him safe.

Mary says it can make him safer. She says she knows the risks but won’t push this child away like Catherine did to Bash. She says she has to open her heart and he has to do right by his son with her blessing. She says their marriage will be stronger for it. She leaves him with his son. He picks up the boy and cuddles him. The nurse comes in and he asks to be shown how to hold him properly.

She demonstrates. She says she remembers holding him in her arms when he was this little. She says when she gave him life she thought it was the best thing she ever did. He asks who she’s talking to and the nurse asks doesn’t he recognize his own father. She pulls an evil face and calls him usurper. Then she snaps out of it and doesn’t remember what she was saying.

THE END!
