The CW’s much loved supernatural drama, The Vampire Diaries, returns tonight with a whole new episode called “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” On tonight’s show Enzo will resort to violence to convince Bonnie and Jeremy to help them, but their plan will take an unexpected and horrifying turn. On the last episode When Enzo brought Damon a gruesome present and insisted that they bond by committing an act of revenge, Damon was going to make an effort to do the honorable thing. After finding himself in awkward and confusing conversations with Nadia, Matt impulsively decided to throw a party, where Caroline made a stunning confession to Elena, then had to face the consequence of her actions with Stefan and Tyler. Aaron did her best to make amends for his family’s past misdeeds and will start a new life for himself. Finally, Elena was going to suddenly find herself in a life-threatening situation with only minutes to figure out how to save herself. Kellie Cyrus directed the episode, and it was written by Brett Matthews & Sonny Postiglione.
On tonight’s episode hoping to help everyone move past recent traumatic events, Caroline will convince Elena and Bonnie to attend Whitmore College’s “Bitter Ball” for broken-hearted students. Bonnie will be intrigued with a fellow student named Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell), who appears to be dabbling in witchcraft. Tyler will start to worry about Matt’s relationship with Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda). After making a disturbing discovery, Stefan will have a frustrating conversation with Damon and Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey). Dr. Wes (guest star Rick Cosnett) is going to struggle to continue his research project with help from a new benefactor ,named Sloan (guest star Caitlin McHugh). Still bent on revenge, Damon and Enzo will resort to violence to convince Bonnie and Jeremy to help them, but their plan will take an unexpected and horrifying turn.

Katherine writes in her diary how great her life is now that she’s stolen Elena’s body. She says she’s loved, happy and healthy – has everything she wants and is back to being a vampire. She also writes that now that she’s gotten rid of Damon she can get Stefan back.
Caroline tells K that they are done moping and are off to a fresh start – she says it’s stage one of being brave and single. She shows her an invite to the Bitter Ball – a party to celebrate single life. Bonnie notices the girl next to her is spinning her pen with some kind of power but then she shuts it down abruptly.
Stefan sees blood on the back of a car in their driveway and opens it to see Aaron’s corpse in the back. He goes in the house and demands that Damon explain what’s going on in the driveway. He says he let Enzo drive but then realizes he’s talking about the body. Damon says he tore his throat out to get rid of the Whitmores for good.
Enzo says it was his idea and introduces himself to Stefan. Stefan asks if they’re murder buddies now and Damon says they’ve worked out their differences. Enzo asks if he’s heard from Dr. Maxfield because he’s next on the kill list. Damon says he’s done changing himself for the girl and tells Stefan he doesn’t need saving. Enzo says Stefan should get a new hobby – like scrapbooking. Stefan tells him he’s better than this but Damon insists he’s better like this.
Katherine calls Matt to ask how she should approach Stefan to come see her on campus. He answers and then Nadia compels him to forget the conversation. K reminds her that Matt is her ticket into acting like Elena. Nadia says she’s tired of hanging around the grill but her Mom says she knows she likes being with Matt.
Dr. Maxfield has a guy chained up – Joey – that he’s turned into a vampire. He tells him that he’s turned him and is going to train him to eat other vampires. He says he has time but needs money. Then a chick comes in – Sloane – and offers him new funding for his research. He asks how she knows and she says that she knows all about Augustine Research and she wants him to analyze some blood for her. She tosses him Aaron’s backpack and tells him that his nephew is missing and his car was found abandoned. She tells him that she thinks Aaron is dead and that he’s next.
Enzo invites Damon on a road trip after they kill Maxfield but Damon says he’s not thinking that far ahead. They’ve got Diane, head of Whitmore security, chained up in the prison cells. They compel her to tell the truth about covering up campus suicides and she admits she did but says she hasn’t heard from Maxfield in days. Since she’s of no more use, Enzo snaps her neck. Now she’s a literal and figurative dead end…
Enzo’s digging a grave when Stefan finds him and tells him to find a new BF and get lost. He tells him Damon doesn’t need him around and Enzo says he heard Stefan was a do-gooder. Enzo invites him to join in him in their bad boy antics and hands him the shovel. Stefan knocks him down and puts the shovel into his abdomen but stops short. Enzo grabs the shovel and puts it in further and tells him that there’s nothing he can do to him that hasn’t already been done. But then Stefan poises the tip of the shovel on his throat and tells him what he does to him will be permanent. He tells him to go away before he ends him. He tosses the shovel down and walks away.
Katherine toys with the contacts on Elena’s phone, considering how she should contact Stefan. Caroline comes in and she tells her she needs her help. She asks for earring advice and Caroline asks since when does she accessorize. K tells her that she needs jewelry for the party and Carolina tells her she knows she’s faking. K panics but then Caroline explains that she means that she’s faking happy on her account. Stefan calls and before she answers, she asks Caroline if Stefan might come to the party. He wants to talk to her about Enzo and she invites him to the party. He declines but she says please and that she’ll owe him if he comes.
Tyler comes into the grill and asks for a drink that will obliterate the memory of Caroline. He spots Nadia down the bar and asks about her but Matt tells him to forget about her – that she’s the psycho daughter of Katherine. She says she can hear him and he reminds her that she buried him in a safe. She tells him to leave her alone and let her grieve. Tyler invites her to drink shots and reminisce about their dead mothers. Matt joins them in the drinking game. Tyler says he has to pee and she’s surprised that hybrids pee. He leaves and Nadia asks Matt who Enzo is. He answers and Tyler hears it from across the bar as she compels Matt to forget the question.
Bonnie tells Jeremy he has to meet her at the dance since it’s for singles rather than arriving together. Then Damon is there and says he’s there to kidnap Jeremy. Uh-oh.
Jeremy says it’s not funny and Bonnie says no but Damon says she’s got no magic to stop him. He tells her he knows there are other witches on campus. He gives her some of Maxfield’s blood and tells her to find a witch to run a locator spell. He threatens Jeremy’s life and Bonnie says Elena wouldn’t like it and Damon makes it clear he doesn’t care. Enzo shows up and almost squishes his noggin until Bonnie agrees to help.
K gets a text from Nadia telling her who Enzo is and that he’s dangerous. Stefan greets her at the party and he asks who thought up this party and she says lonely single people. They even have dead corsages. Stefan is surprised at how happy she seems. They dance and she says she’s fine and is the only non-bitter person at the Bitter Ball. He tells her that Damon is into some bad stuff and she says that’s not surprising. She says that she tried to fix and change him but she says instead he changed her and she doesn’t like who she’s become. She asks Stefan if he likes who she is compared to who she was. He hesitates and she asks about Enzo. He asks if they can talk about it later and they dance. But then Caroline drags her out of his arms and takes her to the shredding station.
Tyler tells Matt that Nadia’s been compelling him and has swiped his vervain. He tells him to drink some now and he goes to get some. They keep it in the coffee.
At the dance, they have a big shredder going to eat up mementos of exes – photos, letters, etc. Caroline shreds a photo and then shreds the drawing Klaus gave her when they first met. She says her relationships with Klaus and Tyler are done and she won’t change her mind. K asks if she’s talking about her and Caroline says that she shouldn’t be confusing things with Stefan. Caroline tells her to forget it and K goes back to Stefan.
Damon and Bonnie come to the dance and she points out Liv – the witch from her class. He says he’s feeling lucky. Caroline tries to get Stefan to dance and asks why he’s there. He tells her that Damon is off the deep end and he tells her that he killed Aaron. Caroline is appalled. He says he came to tell Elena but then just couldn’t. He’s worried she’ll give up on Damon for good when she tells him. He says that Damon seems to enjoy causing pain and making people hate him.
Damon walks up with Bonnie and tells Stefan to chill. He tells them that Bonnie is helping him find a witch to find Maxfield so he can kill him. Bonnie tells them Enzo is holding Jeremy hostage and will kill him at midnight if she doesn’t find Maxfield. She has a photo she shows them and then K is there and she fakes panic (as Elena would be) and rushes away looking upset.
K calls Nadia and asks if she could let Jeremy die. She talks about the pros of him croaking and Nadia tells her that Elena would do anything to save Jeremy and not doing that will give her away. She asks if she should put her life on the line to save him – she knows where he is because she recognized the backdrop in the photo. She tells Nadia to find out from Matt if Stefan and Caroline have feelings for each other.
Nadia asks Matt the question and he says he has no idea. She asks if Elena and Caroline ever fought over Stefan. She asks if Elena could win Stefan back. Nadia leaves and Tyler is there and he’s about to tell him about it when Nadia shows up and snaps Tyler’s neck.
Back at the party, K cries and begs Stefan to help her find Jeremy. Bonnie finds Liv and tells her she needs her help. Liv acts like she doesn’t know her and she tells her who her Grams is and Liv plays dumb until Bonnie tells her she knows she’s a witch. Liv continues to play dumb. Liv tells her to get lost and Bonnie demands her help.
Liv says she can’t help her because she doesn’t know what she’s doing and is just a freak. But then Caroline is there and fangs up and scares the girl and tells her to help. Bonnie shows her how to do the locator spell and tells her to forget about the vampire thing and work the spell. Damon asks how long it’s going to take and Caroline gets snippy with him. Bonnie tells her the spell to cast and Liv repeats it. She repeats it again and the wind starts to blow and the lights all blow out with her power.
Damon asks if it’s a good sign. Liv says she can’t do it. She tells them she can’t control her powers and they have pyromaniac results. Enzo calls and demands to know what’s taking so long. Damon puts him on speaker and Enzo tells them he’s going to kill Jeremy soon. Caroline demands that Damon stop it and he gives her a glare and says that cooperation is not optional.
[9:00:26 PM] Rachel Rowan: Enzo has Jeremy tied up at the Whitmore house and tells him that Bonnie is failing. Jer asks what he’s going to do and tells him killing him won’t inspire her. Enzo says he doesn’t want to be a cliché killer and Jeremy tells him he doesn’t have to do it. Enzo says if you don’t follow through on threats then they don’t work. He puts a bag over his head and suffocates him.
Bonnie tells Liv she’s done bad things too but learned to control her powers and can teach her too. She shows her a photo of Jeremy and Liv says he’s cute. Bonnie tells her his life is literally in her hands. She tells her if she burns the school down it’s on her.
Stefan and K rush in and she tries to revive Jeremy while Stefan and Enzo brawl. She beats his chest and he finally comes to but then Enzo hits her with a fireplace tool. Damon shows up and tells him the spell worked and he knows where Maxfield is. Stefan tells Damon not to bother coming back and he tells him he wasn’t planning on it. K smiles at that when no one can see her.
Tyler comes to and asks where Nadia is. Matt says that there was a misunderstanding and that Nadia only wanted to talk to him about Katherine and knew he would freak out. Tyler tells him to stay away from Nadia and he agrees. Tyler leaves and he gets in the car with Nadia. She tells him if Tyler follows them, she’ll kill them both. Matt has figured out that K isn’t dead and is in Elena’s body. She tells him she will take his ring and snap his neck and he’ll be dead for good. She tells him first they are getting the vervain out of his system and then she’ll decide what she’s going to do with him.
Enzo asks Damon if he wants to play Rochambeau to see who kills Maxfield and Damon says he was only there to get Stefan and Elena to give up on him for good. Suddenly they’re surrounded by chanting Travelers and then Maxfield is there and says they’re his backup. Enzo thinks they’re witches but Damon explains who they are right before they collapse holding their heads in torment.
Elena looks at her back where she was struck and Stefan asks if she’s okay. She tells him she may have a splinter and asks him to check. He finds it and pulls it out. She says she thinks she knows what he was trying to tell her. She turns around and asks if Damon killed Aaron. She says knows he couldn’t have gone into the Whitmore house if the owner had been alive. She asks why he didn’t tell her and he apologizes. She says she thought they could be honest with each other and he tells her that ever since he saw her falling for Damon he’s been waiting for her to finally give up on his brother. He says that Damon is always there for her no matter what so after a while he stopped waiting for Damon to fail her because he liked who Damon is when they’re together. She tells him she can’t go back to Damon ever again because of what he did to Jeremy. She says she’ll try to help Damon but only for Stefan and not for her. She hugs him and smiles behind his back. Caroline comes in interrupts.
Damon and Enzo come to and they try to figure out what’s been done to them. Damon tells Enzo about Maxfield’s plot to have vampires feed on each other. They go poking around the old building and find the guy who’s chained up. Damon wakes him and the guy asks if he will let him go. Damon unchains him and when he smells blood on his hands he eats the guy right after saying it’s karma. He turns hungrily toward Enzo and Enzo says he sees this is going to be a problem. Uh-oh – Maxfield has made Damon a vampire cannibal!!!
