Tonight on ABC Family’s new show premieres called Becoming Us with an all new Monday June 15, season 1 episode 2 called “#FalloutBoy,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Danielle’s family invite Ben to dinner to try to help him sort out his feelings.
On the last episode, Ben was an ordinary Midwestern teenager, going through a unique situation. After his parents’ recent divorce, Ben learned that his dad was transitioning into a woman, Carly. In the series’ opener, “#WelcomeToMyWorld,” Ben is struggling in school, and his parents, Suzy and Carly, were not happy about it. Ben’s girlfriend, Danielle, would like to introduce Carly to her father, who was also transgender, leading to an awkward shopping trip for the four of them. And Ben’s sister, Sutton, returns home to Evanston to plan her upcoming wedding. Did you watch the last episode? If you missed it we have a full and detailed recap right here for you.
On tonight’s episode as per the ABC Family Synopsis, “Danielle’s family invite Ben to dinner to try to help him sort out his feelings; Brook hopes Ayton and Lathan will bond at an outing she’s organized; Sutton and Carly select items for Sutton’s wedding registry.”

RECAP:
On #BecomingUs, chapter two #FalloutBoy, Carly calls Ben but gets voice mail. She asks why he’s not answering his phone and asks him to call her back. Ben is out riding his bike stressing out. Danielle meets him at the dog beach. She asks what’s up and he tells her that his dad Carly is getting sexual reassignment surgery. He says he doesn’t know how to process that his dad is getting SRS.
Ben asks about her dad’s transition and she says she was angry and it’s like she’s losing her dad. Ben says Carly wants him to call him mom and Ben says he refused to do it and said it’s Dad or Carly. Danielle gives him a hug and then he gets a text to go see Emilia his tutor. Danielle isn’t happy she came all that way and he’s taking off. Ben thanks her for coming. He leaves.
Carly texts and asks Ben to call her. He heads to see his tutor who asks why he’s late and he says he was out biking. She gets on to him for always running late. She says she heard he has 52 detentions and asks how that happens since there are only 52 weeks in a year. She asks if he has pen and paper and he didn’t bring a pen. Emilia asks why he’s not focusing and Ben tells her about the SRS surgery.
Ben says he doesn’t understand this and he’s angry and doesn’t know why she’s doing it. He says it’s hard to focus. Emilia asks if talking to Carly will help but Ben says she’s going to do it anyway so it doesn’t matter. Emilia asks about homework and they start on some math. At Danielle’s, her friend Sarah is there hanging out and Danielle says her homecoming photos look cool.
Danielle says Sarah is great because she never had a problem with her dad being transgender. Sarah asks what’s up with Ben and Danielle says she doesn’t know. She says she gets what he’s going through and will always love him. She says she needs some support from him too. Danielle says it’s complicated. Carly and Sutton are out working on her wedding registry.
She asks Carly if they registered but he says they eloped. Sutton says she remembers them coming to ask her if she wanted to leave school and come along. Carly says she’s having problems with Ben avoiding her and says he doesn’t return her calls or texts. She says it’s kind of hurtful. Sutton says she was always off doing her own thing at that age too.
Carly wonders if Ben is having a hard time with the surgery. Sutton says it’s a big change for Ben and he hasn’t had as long to figure things out. Sutton says he’ll come around and Carly says she hopes so. Ben goes to Ayton and Brook’s house to talk about Halloween. Lathan is making a cool cosplay costume of a raven demon. Lathan designs costumes and performs at anime conventions.
Ayton says Lathan doesn’t have a sense of humor and is very dark and he’s not very excited about him staying with them. Ben shows up dressed as a giant fluffy bunny. He explains his raven demon costume and that everyone has demons. Brook says Lathan has a lot of inner demons and they talk about going to a haunted house. Lathan points out that Ayton is dressed as a lady cow.
Ben says he’s a transgender cow. Danielle texts Ben about getting together but he says he made other plans. Lathan looks cool – like Howl in his demon form from Howl’s Moving Castle. Ben says Carly is up his bet and won’t stop texting him. Ayton says to text back to cut the umbilical cord. Danielle’s dad Dan is doing some home improvement for his ex, Mandy, Danielle’s mom.
Dan says he feels guilty for what he did to her but says they are still a functioning family. Mandy asks if she’s going out with Ben but Danielle says Ben found out about Carly’s surgery and he’s not handling it well. Dan asks if he’s freaking out and she says he’s freaking out a lot and isn’t processing it. Dan says Carly will still be the same person. She says she told him to talk to Carly.
Mandy says Ben is afraid but Danielle says he’s angry. Mandy asks if Ben would talk to Dan to see how normal it can be. She says it didn’t change things too much for them. Mandy says that way they can have a family dinner with Ben. Danielle says he’s being wishy washy and doesn’t want to talk about it. She says she doesn’t want to discuss it with them.
Dan says he’s lucky to have Danielle as a friend at least and Mandy says Dan can beat some sense into him. Ben and his buddies go to the haunted house. It’s a haunted prison set up. Suzy comes to see Carly and he asks for help with Ben. He says Ben is ignoring his texts and calls. Suzy says Ben is probably confused and she asks if Ben feels safe about expressing himself.
Carly says there’s no reason they can’t talk about this stuff and says Ben doesn’t want to tackle feelings head on. Suzy says she and Carly are different in many ways but she’s happy to help Ben out for Ben’s sake, not Carly’s sake. Suzy says this is a lot for Ben to handle and Carly will need to support him and pull him back across the line.
Suzy says Ben can be a tough nut sometimes. Lathan complains about the dirty dishes at Brook and Ayton’s place. Lathan says it smells and says you have to take care of your own stuff. Ayton says he’s busy and Lathan can clean the dishes since he’s crashing on the couch. Lathan says Ayton is a slob and the bathroom is gross. Ayton wonders if Lathan doesn’t like him and Lathan wants Ayton to just clean.
Brook and Ayton are out on a date. She says Ayton can be a douchebag but is sweet and loving. Ayton says Brook is beautiful and intelligent. She says she would consider Ayton for marriage. She says they have an amazing sex life too. Ayton says he has a question for her and asks how long Lathan is going to be staying with them. Brook says he’s family so she wants to let him stay as long as he needs to.
Ayton says he’s in final exams and needs to study. She says Ayton can study at the library and he says Lathan can go to the library with other homeless people. Brook doesn’t like the way Ayton is acting. Brook says Lathan can be hard to warm up to but says they’ve both been through a lot. She says the apartment can be cramped and they should all go out so he and Lathan can bond.
Brook suggests taking him bowling. Ayton says he has fat thumbs so it’s not his go to sport. Ayton cracks a vampire joke about her brother and Brook says he’s not being nice. Sutton and Emilia are looking up the SRS surgery to find out what it’s all about. They watch a video. Then they scream and Suzy asks what’s going on. They watch the surgery video and Suzy says it’s amazing.
Emilia says they don’t just get rid of “it” – the penis – they use it. Sutton says it’s like turning it inside out. Emilia wants to see what the final product looks like and Emilia says you must be desperate to be a woman to go through all that. Lathan watches Brook at her hockey practice – she’s a goalie. He’s very impressed at her performance. She asks where Ayton is and he says he came alone on the train.
Lathan says he doesn’t know what Brook sees in Ayton at all. She says he just needs to give him a chance and suggests they all go bowling. Lathan agrees. Ben joins Danielle’s family for dinner. Dan asks Ben what’s going on in his life and Ben brings up Carly. Dan asks if they’ve talked and Ben says he hasn’t been talking to her. Mandy asks how his mom is handling this.
Ben says his mom just wonders why she gets involved with dumb guys. Dan tells him that it may seem very selfish but says Carly likely feels guilt, shame and other feelings he’s not talking about. Dan says this is something Ben’s dad has to deal with and says they worked through it in their family. Mandy says you get used to and says now they don’t really even think about it.
Dan says Ben’s dad will be much happier once he’s done with this. Ben says Carly used to mope and be very negative before she was Carly. Danielle says she loves Carly and says Carly is great. Dan says he should talk to his dad as much as possible and says he was a jerk too before he became who he wanted to be. Ben says seeing Danielle’s family gives him hope.
Dan then asks about Ben and Danielle’s relationship. Ben says they’re late for bowling. Dan keeps asking and Ben says they’re just accomplices. Dan asks Ben about kissing Danielle and Ben says that’s their queue to leave. Dan says he’s a nice kid but he needs to kick his ass. They go to meet Ayton, Brook and Lathan to bowl. Ayton and Lathan bond somewhat.
Ayton says it wasn’t a bond on a molecular level but it was a bit of closeness. The losers have to cook for the winners and Brook is pleased that she won and is also happy her brother and BF are getting along better. Ben is at his mom’s place hanging out with Danielle. She says she has news for Ben and tells him she got into Columbia in Chicago. She says she even got an academic scholarship.
She says Ben can come visit her. Ben says it’s good that they can support each other. He asks if she accepted and he begs her to choose that school. Danielle says she will and says even if Ben is a jerk he’s a cute jerk. She says she’s so over high school. Ben says his life would have been a lot harder if he had never met Danielle. He gives her a big hug.
Ben plays video games when his mom comes over to sit with him. She asks how killing people on the video game makes him feel then asks if he’s talked to Carly. He says no and he hasn’t taken any of Carly’s calls. His game is over and Suzy says Carly can push her buttons sometimes and annoys her somewhat. But she says she doesn’t want to throw that on Ben because it’s not fair.
Ben says when she gets upset, she gossips. Suzy says she knows Carly loves and adores Ben and wouldn’t want to take away from that relationship no matter how she feels about Charlie/Carly. She tells Ben he should reach out to Carly about their dad/son relationship and should have the relationship they want. Ben admits he has to work on his relationship with Carly.
Ben meets up with Carly who picks him up from school and says he’s taking him captive. Carly says since he’s ignoring his messages, he decided to pick him up so they can talk. Carly asks why he’s avoiding him and Ben says he’s not. He says he’s still thinking about his dad but is taking his time to grasp what’s going on with the surgery and it being official that he will be a woman.
Carly says the surgery is a no going back kind of thing and not a phase. He asks if the surgery itself is the problem for Ben or if it’s other emotions. Ben says it took Carly some time to decide and it will take him some time to adjust. Carly says he’ll give him all the time he needs but asks Ben to please take his calls. Carly says not spending time with him won’t make it any easier.
At Brook and Ayton’s,the guys are cooking for the women. They made soup for them. The girls complain that they just made Ramen. Brook says they should have a competition on who can make the worst dinner. Ayton shows them how he’s using a spoon and fork and Danielle says Lathan is her favorite person. Back at Suzy’s, Ben says he wishes everything was back the way it used to be.
He says Carly wants a wonderful relationship with him but it’s too early for all that. Carly says Ben just stays honest with him and wants to be there to get Ben through his teen years. Ben says he knows life won’t be what it used to be but says maybe it’s a good thing and could even be better.
