#FindingCarter starts with Lori coming to see Carter at work and Carter threatens her with a restraining order. Lori says she’s there about Ben and thinks he’s in serious trouble. She says he stays in his room, won’t talk to her then says she found things when cleaning his room. Lori says she found 100 IDs and flash drives and cash. Lori says he has $7k in a backpack. Carter says to ask him.

Lori asks Carter to talk to him and says something is wrong. Carter calls Ben and gets voice mail. She leaves another message and asks him to call her back. Taylor is there and asks what’s up. Carter says Lori came to see her about Ben. Carter asks if she’s hung out with Ben and Taylor says he keeps to himself. Carter says it’s more than that and Taylor says it’s foster kid syndrome.

She says Ben helped her get Gabe to bed when he was drunk then says Ben thinks Gabe has a thing for her. Carter agrees. Ben hands Taylor a fake ID and she’s happy. She says she’s impressed then asks why he’s giving it to her. He says it’s a thank you for being cool. He says Carter is intense. Taylor says they all have their own way of coping. She asks him to dinner but he says he can’t tonight. She says next time.

Ben says maybe then walks off. Liz brings David coffee when he’s getting ready for his call with his publisher about his new pages. He says they want a Christmas release. She kisses his cheek and acts all supportive. Carter looks around the schoolyard for Ben then calls him. She spots him coming out and sees him ignore her call then shake his head in annoyance. He gets into a taxi and she follows. Gabe heads to track practice and Taylor asks why he was late then says coach noticed.

He says he was giving the new German exchange student a drive in his sports car. He asks if he caused a lot of trouble when he was drunk and she says she and Ben put him to bed. The coach gives him a penalty lap for being late but Gabe tries to make an excuse. Gabe pushes back and says he’s their best runner and says give him a break. The coach says five laps or leave. Gabe grabs his bag and says he’s out of there. He jogs off.

Carter is almost hit running a red light to keep up with the cab. They head to a shady part of town. The taxi pulls over and Ben gets out. He puts on his backpack and heads across the street. He walks past some hookers then goes into a building. A junkie slams his face against Carter’s window startling her. She rolls down the window and he asks if she’s looking for H. She says she’s waiting for someone and he asks who. He says people don’t like being watched. He tells her to get her ass out of here.

She puts her window up uncomfortably. Bird finds Taylor spacing out in the library. She says Gabe is losing it and Carter dropped out. Bird says Carter is a force of nature. They talk about partying and how Gabe is hitting it too hard. Bird says one thing that might get through to Gabe is a positive Zen master. David finds Liz in the basement and she says she’s thinking about a media room. He says his call went well and they want to book a two month tour and then another month in the UK.

He says the university offered him a sabbatical to help with it. Liz asks what he said and he says he told them he was ready whenever. Liz asks if this is the best time to leave since things are unsettled and says the kids need him and she does too. David says it’s not going to be easy but says the publisher is getting behind it and almost never pays for a tour. He says this means a better life for all of them. Liz asks about Lori then says when did Lori’s needs come into their question.

Liz says Lori keeps pulling them back in and David says he sees it but has to do right by his son. Taylor talks to Max about someone with problems who isn’t ready to listen. She says he should go out with Gabe and says he needs to talk to someone. Max says Gabe has a lot of friends but she says drunk cheerleaders then tells him he’s drunk and wise and asks him to have a bro night with Gabe. Max says they’ve never hung out before and Taylor says he needs a good time.

She says maybe a ball game and something not about wasting money or having cheap sex. He says maybe dinner and a pool game. Max says he’ll miss her Italian tonight but she promises to save him some. Carter sits in the car and then sees Ben arguing with a guy and a girl telling him to let her go. Ben hands a stack of cash over to the other guy and that guy walks away. The girl slaps Ben’s face and storms off while he begs her to stop – he calls out to Olivia and says he’s sorry then sees Carter there.

He pulls up his hood and walks the other way. Liz tells David she’s been thinking about Ben and says maybe he should live with them since it would be more stable. David says she’s right but then says she can’t want a custody battle with Lori. David says he’d like to have him there but doesn’t know if it’s a good time to bring it up with Lori. Liz says she was just thinking about he and Ben. He thanks her and says he’d need to know how Ben feels before he pushes on Lori about it.

Carter shows up to work and tells Jared she came to check her schedule. He asks if she’s okay and wants a drink. She says she can use one and he pours her a shot. He asks if she wants to talk about it and she says she has a kind of brother. Jared says he has three. She says she just met hers and he asks if it’s a step or half. She says long story then says her brother is up to something and she can’t figure it out. Jared sits and asks what he’s up to. Then he asks is he a serial killer?

Carter says he gave a guy an envelope of cash then argued with a girl. Jared asks if he’s dealing and she says she hopes not but he was in a sketchy area then says she can’t ask him. Jared says people show you who they are in the end and you just have to pay attention. She says he sounds like he’s been burned before then says she’s smart, cute and has a ton of baggage she hasn’t let ruin her. She says not yet but he says never and pours her another shot.

Max and Gabe are talking and hanging. Gabe reads off the litany of sins of girls he’s been hanging out with. Gabe says Max is lucky to have Taylor. They play a video game and Max says he was distracting him to win. Gabe says they should go somewhere else. They head out. Carter comes home and finds Taylor cooking. She asks if Carter is okay. She says she had a weird day. Ben is at the door with flowers in hand then asks if he’s too late for dinner. He smiles and so does David. Carter looks flummoxed.

Liz thanks him for the flowers and David says he’s right on time. Taylor tells him it was cool of him to come. Carter says hi and he says – good to see you again – then walks away. Ben talks about being a roadie at 14 to Jim Tyson. Liz is clueless and Taylor tells her to Google it. He says he was with them a week until they realized how young he was. Ben and David talk Southern rock then and David is happy. Ben says he would have pegged him as a classical music guy.

He says he likes classical music too. Taylor asks where he went after he got found on the road. He says Delaware then he says he and Carter saw each other today. She lies and says it was the mall and she’s job hunting. Carter says she’s not good at showing people that don’t know her that they can trust her. Taylor agrees that Carter is pretty reliable. Grant asks if she’s applying to be a secret agent. Carter starts to clear and asks Ben to help her.

Carter asks Ben what he’s doing. He says Taylor invited him to dinner so he came to find out why she’s stalking him. Carter says Lori found his business stuff and the cash. She says Lori is worried and she is now too. He says he was helping a friend and Carter asks why he paid off that guy. She says she won’t judge or tell anyone and just wants to help. She says she’s been in his position. David comes to get Ben to show him around the house. Ben goes with him and blows her off.

David shows him the book he wrote about Carter whose real name is Lyndon. He asks what the next book is called and he says Finding Carter. He says he’s going to write fiction after this. Ben asks if there will be a Before Ben book then asks to please never write one about him. He looks at a family photo and he says Delaware Water Gap a few months ago. Liz watches them talk. Ben says he’s never been camping but thinks he’d like it. David says maybe they can go sometime. He gets a call.

David leaves him in his office. Ben sees David’s watch on the desk and stares at it. Gabe and Max are at the Magic Hour and Jared tells Gabe he’s on probation. Gabe says it won’t happen again. Gabe wants to bet $100 on a pool game. Max says they can play for pride and beers and Gabe picks up the cash. Gabe thanks him for inviting him and says it’s a first but it’s cool. He says he and his dad used to play pool. Max says he must think about him a lot. He tells Max he’s not sleeping well.

He says it’s hard when there’s not someone making you get up then worries what if he died in his sleep or choked on a grape. Max says they’d all know then says don’t forget to chew. Gabe laughs and cracks the rack. Carter loads the dishwasher and Taylor comes in and asks what’s up. Carter says Ben wouldn’t let her apologize for following him today. She says he went to Culmore and Taylor says that’s a bad neighborhood. Taylor says they are both exactly alike and that’s why she and Ben are butting heads.

Taylor can’t believe she doesn’t see it then says they’re both smart, defensive, obnoxious, and says to lay off him a little. Taylor says she’s not all over him and that’s why they’re getting along. She says Ben likes the hands-off approach. Ben pokes around the office for a bit looking at things then Grant is outside the door and sees Ben pick up David’s watch. He tries it on his wrist and Grant steps back to watch. Ben tucks it in his pocket.

Grant comes and tells Carter about Ben taking the watch. Carter asks if he’s sure and he says he is. David comes back and tells Ben his tour dates are locked. Ben asks where the bathroom is and he tells him. Max beats Gabe at pool again and then Taylor sends a text asking how he doing. Gabe asks if she sent him to babysit then says he’s an idiot. Max says Taylor is just watching out for him. Max says Taylor cares about him and Gabe says thanks for a fake night and stomps away.

David tells Liz this night has been surprising. She says she saw him and Ben talking then says they both lean left when they get excited. She says it’s sweet and says things will be okay. He says they deserve a break and she agrees. Liz finds Ben all alone and she asks if he had a good time then says they’re not so bad. He says Lori doesn’t trash talk and they don’t really talk at all. Liz says that can’t be easy. She asks what he would think about moving in with them.

Ben asks if she’s serious and she says she is. Ben says she wants to take him from Lori like she took Carter. Liz says she thinks he’d be safer and more comfortable with them. Ben says if he was in her shoes, he would want revenge against Lori too. Ben says he doesn’t want to play like that. Carter asks to talk to Ben and he says yeah. They step into the garage and she asks what was he doing in David’s office after he stepped out.

She asks if he went through his stuff and if he took anything. He asks like what. She says this whole family has been nice to him then asks how can he sit there and talk to them and then steal from their dad. He asks what he stole and she says hand it over. Ben says this is why he’s not into the whole family thing. Carter says give her the watch and she won’t say anything. He says screw you then thanks them for a nice evening and walks out abruptly after a glare at Carter.

Carter tells David that Ben took his watch and David shows her that his watch is on his arm. Carter says Grant saw him take it. David says he must have been confused then says he’ll talk to Grant. Liz walks away from Carter who grabs her jacket. She opens the door to Gabe who asks for Taylor. She says in her room then leaves. He head upstairs. Carter goes to the bar and tucks her purse away. He asks if she’s okay and she says not really. He offers her a drink.

David comes to talk to Grant and he asks if Carter told him what happened. Grant says he saw him take it and David says maybe he saw him pick it up but not set it down. Grant says he feels bad. David asks how he’s doing with this. Grant says he’s the only kid in the house who’s totally him and Liz so he’s special. David asks him to keep his watch while he’s gone. Grant says it’s a little big for him and thanks him, promising to take good care of it. David reassures him.

Gabe rants to Taylor about sending Max to babysit him then says it’s humiliating. He says he doesn’t need her finding friends for him. She says she’s scared for him and doesn’t want to lose him. Gabe says it’s too late and walks out. Carter and Jared sit drinking shots at the bar. She says she feels better and he says her being wrong about her brother wasn’t the end of the world but she says he won’t trust her now. She thanks him and goes.

Carter goes to Lori and Ben’s place and knocks on the door. Lori answers and she asks for Ben. Lori says Ben came home mad about her going through his things. Carter says she shouldn’t have gone through his things. Lori says Ben packed his things and left and she has no idea where he is.
