The Cannes Film Festival Bans Celebrity Red Carpet Selfies: Festival President Claims They're Grotesque!

The Cannes Film Festival is really in over their heads if they think their NO SELFIES rule is gonna fly with the celebs. In a society where social media, especially Instagram, is such a common way to share information and memories with followers, “the selfie” is currently a force to be reckoned with. Some of today’s biggest stars post countless red carpet selfies for, and with, their fans.

However, the team over at the Cannes Film Festival does not agree with this action, and they are doing everything they can to prevent it from happening at their event. They can’t be serious…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the president of the film festival, Pierre Lescure, will try to minimize the amount of selfies that can be taken on the red carpet at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival. In an official statement, he says, “We don’t want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps. We think it’s ridiculous and grotesque and really slows things down. You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie.”

What? How do you release an ‘official’ statement and basically tell the celebrities that are attending your event that they look ugly in their selfies – often times an extension of their very souls! That sounds like a sure fire way to get a bunch of celebrities to back out of the event, or at least annoy them enough to pay no mind to your stupid rule. If we were attending, the statement would only do one thing for us: encourage us to take MORE selfies.

We understand banning selfie sticks at various festivals because they can be a distraction, or even a danger to the surrounding people, but telling a celebrity not to take pictures of themselves on a red carpet, where they are supposed to be photographed anyway, makes no sense to us. What do you think? Do you agree with the selfie ban, or are they blowing this way out of proportion?
