A John Doe was the victim of a hit and run but Laura had to wonder if he was really a victim. The man that had died was hit by a car that purposely targeted him while he was loitering in the nearby park. Thus there was always a possibility that whoever hit their John Doe was doing so because they felt he was a danger to the children he seemed to be intent on watching.

Only that idea didn’t seem to pan out once they realized who John Doe was. His real name was Ronald Balasko and, yes, he did have a record. But it was a charge for statutory rape of a minor when he was 21 and she was 16. And the same girl that he apparently “assaulted” is now his widow.

The widow said it was never her idea to press charges. Her father had caught them at it one time and informed the police.

As for the widow, she married Ronald when he got out and they were expecting a baby. Yet with a record like his, it was hard for him to regular 9 to 5 job. So he mostly worked as a day laborer. No records because everything was done in cash and sometimes he wasn’t always lucky to find work.

So on the day he died, Laura figured he probably was in the area because it was a bad day for him and that’s when he saw the cab. The same cab that had been reported as stolen a full 12 minutes before it was used to kill someone. But if Ronald wasn’t the intended victim then who was?

Unfortunately, Laura and her team didn’t find the answer to the question until it was too late. They found the cab and they found pictures of a young boy inside. As if whoever was driving the vehicle earlier wasn’t looking to kill anyone – they were merely going to kidnap a child.

The boy’s name is Theo and, by time his family was located, he had already been kidnapped. Those same people as before had come back with an all-new stolen cab and they snatched him before either Laura or Jake could warn the parents. So then they had to figure out why someone would kidnap the boy.

His parents were still together and he had an older sister that no one had wanted to kidnap. Meaning his case wasn’t a custody fight between mom and dad. And, after looking into, neither of them had enemies that would actual an argument that personal.

But something wasn’t making sense to Laura. She thought Theo’s mom was holding back on information and a look into the parents financial showed that spent a large amount of cash around the same time Theo was born. So Laura came up with the idea that Theo’s parents were not his biological parents and that they had actually bought him instead.

And that was only partially true. Theo parents had gone through private adoption and had even faked a pregnancy so that no one would know Theo wasn’t biological theirs. Yet Theo’s other parents were both allegedly dead.

Gayle Walker had died from her diabetes and the man she had named as the father had died in prison. And as for the adoption, Gayle was not forced into anything. She was from a really bad neighborhood and had given up her son so that he could have a better life.

Thus it wasn’t his biological family that had kidnapped Theo. They wouldn’t want to drag him back down but there had to be some kind of connection that the police weren’t seeing. And while they were looking for that – the kidnappers had made a ransom demand.

They called Theo’s parents and demanded seventy-five grand. So the police performed a sting. They were going to watch the exchange and then follow whoever picked up the money. But something went wrong.

Theo’s mom demanded they give her son his insulin and was so caught in detailing to the driver what had to be done – the drop off was going south. So Laura tried to step in and she was would have gotten a handle on it if it were not for her new boss. Since Jake’s shooting, a new captain has been making Laura’s life a living hell.

And you would think this captain would be dismissed upon Jake’s return but Jake said he preferred being Senior Detective and thus was not in charge at the drop off.

That was the new captain. And she chose to jump the gun by calling in everyone just as Laura was getting close to retrieving the boy. So that made them lose their chance at recovering him at that moment.

And so Laura wanted to find a way to oust her new boss. Yet, because they got one of the kidnappers, that day was considered a victory. They had picked up the guy who was supposed to collect the money and few mintues in the interrogation room with Jake made him say something he ended up regretting.

The kidnapper knew that Ronald was a junkie and he would have only have known that if he had also known Ronald. So sadly Ronald was in the on the kidnapping but apparently had a change of heart and was going to stop it all that day in the park. But once his friend realized they were being double-crossed – they killed Ronald.

However, by looking into Ronald, Laura finally figured out the second secret that Theo’s family had been hiding.

His older sister had gone to rehab recently. It seems she went to the same one as Ronald and must have spilled the beans on her parents’ financials during group therapy. But, luckily, she wasn’t the only one that shared during their sessions. And she knew where Ronald used to go to get high.

And Laura managed to find Theo in one of those locations.

Jake had quickly given him his insulin so Theo was alright medically speaking. But when he asked Laura if they were going to do anything about the illegal adoption – she said why bother. They got the sketchy adoption facilitator and Theo’s biological family were all either locked up or dead.

So she chose to leave him with his parents. And after such a long day, Laura realized she didn’t mind the new boss so much. Sure the other woman fired Frankie but her heart appeared to be in the right place.

THE END!
