The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) recognition of Phyllis’ (Gina Tognoni) new appearance might be the spark that draw’s him back to Summer’s (Hunter King) mother. Red’s transformation to a Sage-like (Kelly Sullivan) resemblance was instantly striking. Might Nick’s availability and Phyllis’ freedom set the stage for Phick Part 2 in the New Year?
Long-time fans know the story; Cassie’s (Camryn Grimes) death shocked the soap world more than a decade ago. That specific Y&R decision was so significant that it still resonates today. Partial fallout at the time resulted in Nick starting a relationship with Phyllis (then played by Michelle Stafford). A pregnancy resulted which produced Summer, all of which ended Shick’s run.
Nick and Phyllis married, which added to Sharon’s misery and elicited her mental health problems. Sorry, no self-proclaimed psychiatrists have been called upon for their take. Clarifications about the ex-Mrs. Newman’s inheritance of said psychological issues, or offerings of evidence that existed before her daughter’s untimely death in this regard aren’t overly relevant. Sometimes it’s best to avoid impulsive reactions and remain silent.
Modern day Phyllis opted to freshen her look after working through the Phack wars. She wronged Jack (Peter Bergman) by sleeping with Billy (Jason Thompson) and attempted to wait her most recent husband out in hopes of a revival. But Mr. Abbott quickly divorced the love of his life, who left him for Nick in the aforementioned flashback, and has offered every indication that he won’t ever marry her again. This situation helped drive Phyllis to what appeared to be Y&R’s actual backstage beauty spot.
Nick is still grieving over the loss of Sage, who died after crashing her vehicle. She did so immediately after confronting Sharon about Sully’s (now played by Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) true identity as Christian.
Nick’s romantic feelings have been shifting to Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) since Sage passed. Of course Chelsea believes that she’s a widow because she hasn’t been watching the highly-rated NBC show This Is Us. Yes, Adam (Justin Hartley) threw you and Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) over for yet another life and is calling himself Kevin now. Mystery solved and no stretched reveal is necessary.
New co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman has the option to take all characters in whatever general directions she chooses. So, Chick is hardly destined to be Y&R’s newest super couple. As Sussman’s team’s first few weeks of scripts have just played out, there’s no telling where Nick, Phyllis and others may go, or go together. It would be rather interesting for Morrow and Tognoni to work together, or maybe Phyllis and Chelsea will vie for Nick’s interest in 2017?
