General Hospital (GH) spoilers finally revealed the mysterious connection between Nelle Hayes (Chloe Lanier) and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright). Nelle and Carly share a father – Frank Benson – but for one of them, he’s a biological father and for the other, an adoptive father. Nelle and Carly are step-sisters!
On Wednesday’s GH, it was out of the blue that Carly name-dropped the Bensons. We haven’t heard much about her adoptive family. Carly recounted for Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman) her painful history with her adoptive father. Carly couldn’t decide whether or not to cut Frank out of a family tree photo project.
Carly said Frank ran off and left her and her adoptive mother Virginia Benson when she was three years old. Carly trash talked her adoptive daddy and Nelle didn’t like it all. Carly said that Frank “left them flat and never sent them a dime” then added that “he was sad and bitter “from what Virginia said.
It was the worst day for Carly to bang on about deadbeat adoptive dad Frank. Carly didn’t know it, but Nelle was missing her dad Frank in particular on Wednesday because it was the anniversary of his death. Nelle had to hear her secret step-sister saying bad things about him and was ready to burst in anger and frustration.
Nelle glared and paced while all this was going on and then once Bobbie, Carly and Michael Quartermaine (Chad Duell) left the room, Nelle picked up a photo of Carly as a baby. The big shocker there is that in the pic, baby Carly is holding the “Caroline” rattle that we’ve seen in Nelle’s weird little box of secrets.
So the reveal is that after Frank left his wife Virginia and adopted daughter Carly, he met and married Nelle’s mother and they fell on hard times. That’s why Nelle grew up poor and why Frank and wife number two were so financially desperate that they sold Nelle’s kidney which saved Josslyn Jack’s (Eden McCoy) life.
Nelle loved her father despite the tough life she had growing up. There is obviously much more to the story about why Frank and Virginia split up and why Virginia wound up raising Carly alone. All Nelle can see is that Carly is a rich bitch with a sweet life who’s trash talking Nelle’s daddy Frank.
Bobbie noticed Nelle’s strong reaction to the photo of baby Carly and called up a pal. Bobbie has a friend digging up dirt on Nelle’s past and all her secrets will come out soon. Will Nelle have a chance to finish her dirty work before Bobbie rats her out to Carly? We also know that Nelle and Michael can hook up – they’re not blood relations.
Nelle’s real name must be Nelle Benson and Hayes is likely her mom’s maiden name or some other fiction. Nelle couldn’t come to town with the last name Benson or Carly would have figured it out by now. But that will be the stunner that Bobbie discovers that will blow this all wide open and Nelle will have some big explaining to do.
And how sick is it that Frank Benson sold his little girl Nelle’s kidney to save the life of the kid of his estranged adoptive daughter Carly? What a twisted sister situation this is but it does clear a path for Michael and Nelle to fall into a romance and it sure seems to be heading that way despite the mystery man in her life.
