General Hospital spoilers examine the possibility and consequences of the great Stefan Cassadine returning to GH. For years people have been talking about the possibility of Stefan Cassadine [Stephen Nichols] returning. Stefan was impaled on Luke Spencer’s [Tony Geary] knife during a fight, after which Stefan fell off a cliff. Later, a suicide note was found. It appears that he forced the fight and threw himself on the knife.
One would say, based on GH history, that Stefan making an appearance seems unlikely, except that we saw Franco killed — and others. It’s a long list. Also, if he does return, it will probably be a recast, since Stephen Nichols is busy on ‘Days of Our Lives.’
Right now, the Cassadine family is without a true leader. Helena [Constance Towers] is allegedly dead, as is Nikolas. Valentin [James Patrick Stuart] is a curious character, less involved with the Cassadine family than with his own circumstances. Right now these include his daughter Charlotte [Scarlett Fernandez], wife Nina, [Michelle Stafford] and the illness of Anna Devane [Finola Hughes].
Hopefully Stavros [Robert Kelker-Kelly] won’t be thawed from popsicle form again. Victor [Thaao Penghlis] we was killed by Dr. O [Kathleen Gati].
That leaves Stefan. He came to Port Charles in 1996 and stayed until 2002. At that time, he presented Alexis [Nancy Lee Grahn] and her sister Kristina [Jamie Ray Newman] with some heirlooms, and handed nephew Nikolas [Tyler Christopher] the keys to Wyndemere. He had always wanted to leave the Cassadine world behind, and now he was ready. He was first headed for Milan, where he had rented a villa.
Whatever Stefan was seeking, he didn’t find it because in 2003, he was back. and the Cassadines were broke. He arranged a marriage to a wealthy woman for Nikolas, who was falling in love with Emily [Natalia Livingston]. Stefan, true to his Cassadine blood, tried to kill her. Instead, Luke’s girlfriend Summer [Brittany Powell] was killed.
Let’s say Stefan’s in hiding for some reason. Getting away from Luke is always a good one. Stefan was responsible for many Spencer woes, including his involvement in Lucky’s [Jonathan Jackson] disappearance and brainwashing. Another reason was the fact that he owed Lorenzo Alcazar [Ted King] money from a loan. I’d disappear too.
So Stefan has been away for 13 long years, but he keeps his finger on the pulse of the Cassadines and is aware of the demise of his mother and Nikolas, and knows that Luke has left Port Charles. So he decides to resurface and take his rightful place as head of the Cassadine clan.
With Nikolas possibly returning, this could lead to problems. Nikolas is now 11 years older than he was when Stefan left. Will he turn over power easily? Can both men live at Wyndemere? Will Nikolas feel that he is a bad influence on Spencer [Nicolas Bechtel]?
Stefan is older, too, and when he left he was almost certifiably insane. Is he better now? Or is he worse?
There are people who don’t want to see Stefan – Laura and Bobbie, to name two. His presence in Port Charles could be difficult and, depending on his mental state, and dangerous for everyone else.
