Katy Perry has released her long-awaited diss track against fellow pop star, former BFF and nemesis, Taylor Swift. While many thought Katy and Taylor’s ex, Calvin Harris were teaming up to take Taylor down, it turns out the person who’s help she enlisted was none other than Nicki Minaj, who also had a feud with Taylor two years ago.
Katy and Taylor, who were at one point friendly, had a falling out in 2012 when Katy approached several dancers who were at the time performing on Taylor’s “Red” tour. Katy convinced the dancers to leave mid-tour and thus ignited the pair’s long-running feud.
Taylor also has alluded that Katy would sometimes approach her at award shows and make biting comments, even when the two were friends. Of course it didn’t help that the two also dated John Mayer, although it is a mystery why anyone would deem the inappropriate John as someone worth fighting over.
In the summer of 2015, Taylor released “Bad Blood”, which took a swipe at her former friend and became a #1 hit and even earned Swift another Grammy. Since then everyone has wondered if Katy would respond. Well, Katy dropped, “Swish Swish” with rapper Nicki Minaj.
Nicki and Taylor also feuded a few years back when “Bad Blood” was released and was nominated for an MTV award. Nicki took to Twitter to criticize MTV for celebrating thin white women while overlooking her song, “Anaconda”. Nicki and Taylor feuded on Twitter for about two days before making up and even performed together at that year’s MTV Awards.
Unfortunately for Katy and Nicki, the song doesn’t seem to be charting well. While fans of Katy’s are taking to Twitter to praise her for finally clapping back at Taylor after three years, they don’t seem to be buying the song. It has yet to do well on iTunes and some are unimpressed with the lyrics which seem to be more suited for a Dr. Seuss book than a chart-topping hit.
Just some of the lyrics include: “Your game is tired/You should retire/You’re ’bout cute as/An old coupon expired” and “Swish Swish another one in the basket/Swish Swish another one in the casket.”
If the song fails to make any impact on the charts, it will be Katy’s fourth flop in a row. Some are wondering if she should have even bothered with this song at all, while some wonder what happened to her promise of making “purposeful pop” songs.
