The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Alex (Jess Webb) will tell Sharon (Sharon Case) she slept with Dylan (Steve Burton) when he was in Miami. Having tracked Derek (Dylan’s alias) to Genoa City, Alex learns who her one-off partner really was. Mrs. McAvoy’s life is thus altered irreparably, though she and her family manage to avoid reprisal themselves.
Dylan didn’t really know what he was getting into, as it was the first undercover case of his career. But he felt compelled to take the assignment because of his inability to overcome the shock of the Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) reveal. Oddly, he didn’t hold Sharon fully responsible for placing him inside an unbreakable emotional box.
Omniscient observers knew that Burton voluntarily resigned from Y&R and therefore Dylan had to be written out. As a good employee, Burton gave his employer ample notice to invent an exit strategy for his character that was both believable and fitting. Y&R’s choice to have Dylan risk his life looped back to this character’s debut in 2013. It also allowed Paul (Doug Davidson) to play prominently in the proceedings, though Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) deserved more interaction as well.
Arriving in Genoa City as a broken war hero allowed Burton to move beyond Port Charles. Jason Morgan was a completely different character on ABC’s classic steamer General Hospital. His most iconic persona is one that the actor knows he’ll likely always be most closely connected to. As his performances were consistently solid, that’s surely something to be proud of.
Apparently the rigors of soap life proved to be too much for Burton. At his age (46), considering his family ties and outside interests, this midlife change was enabled. Two-plus successful decades created options. And Burton isn’t begrudged for pursuing this next stage of his life, whatever that may prove to be.
As for Dylan’s legacy, did he leave a baby behind? Sharon is in her 40’s, while Alex is in her 20’s. So, if one of these women is pregnant the better bet would be on the drug queen pin. Clearly Sharon’s perception of her loving husband will radically shift once she’s blindsided by Alex’s Miami vice tales. Yes, the reference to the fabled NBC and once ultra hip detective show was intended.
Y&R fans of a certain age likely made that connection along with this scribe as Burton’s alternative setting scenes were playing. A background beat would have been nice during those episodes, but we can’t have everything. However, a sound ending was written for Dylan, which also provided a proper exit for the solid and upstanding actor who played him.
