The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Justin Hartley’s (Adam Newman) return from the dead (again) would help to resolve the Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) secret. But how can Kevin Pearson (Hartley’s character on NBC’s prime time hit series This Is Us) revert to Adam on Y&R? Unlike daytime dramas, nighttime broadcast television shows don’t record year-round. Those extended breaks allow actors to pursue other projects if they wish and are contractually able to do so.
So Adam, you’re alive!? Well, this issue should be explored for plausibility. Hartley doesn’t necessarily have to film any future episodes in order to be seen alive in 2017. Viewers can’t be certain that he didn’t film advanced scenes which will be shown later this year, thus helping to resolve Christian’s biological connection.
Y&R fans haven’t forgotten that bits of Adam were found at the scene of the cabin explosion. That DNA evidence obviously was written into the script in order to allow for future scientific tests to be conducted at some point. But if that isn’t how this plays out, there are other ways that Nick (Joshua Morrow) will learn Christian is actually his brother’s child.
The age of the internet has allowed a number of former shows, including the Gilmore Girls, to be reborn through limited-run returns. Old-school network television also recently played host to event series that included 24: Live Another Day and The X-Files. Dead shows are reignited, just as past or even deceased characters can be.
Michael Damian reprised Danny Romalotti during a number of brief stints earlier this decade and in the 2000’s, after having left full-time work on Y&R in 1998. Different than Danny, Adam is believed to have been killed. But Hartley could be inked to mini-deal that allowed the infamous Adam to have laughed at the Grim Reaper once again.
Imagine that Adam is peering in at Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) on the day she’s about to marry Nick. Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) is the ring bearer and Christian is being held by his grandfather, Victor (Eric Braden). Later, Chelsea faints after seeing Adam at the end of a Friday episode. Our fortunate friends to the north in Canada would have witnessed that shocker the day before.
A week or so passes until Nick catches Adam outside of the Tack House, where Chick now lives. Victor Junior explains himself, just as Victor Senior arrives. But if Adam is alive and returns to his family why wouldn’t he simply stay in town and resume his life? That surely is the flaw in any theory that would allow Hartley to return for a cameo appearance. No, it’s not.
This is soap where any plausible, or implausible scenario is possible. And speculation, no matter how stretched is always worth exploring. Seasoned fans of this genre have learned to never say never, just as Y&R fans knew back in 2014 and believe now that Adam isn’t dead. And yes, they also understand that Hartley could be seen via a cameo appearance, or appearances.
