The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Mariah (Camryn Grimes) has decided to stick it out with Devon (Bryton James), for now. In so doing she’s furthered Mevon’s sustainability discussion. But Mariah knows that she’s not being honest with Devon, or with herself.
Y&R has opened a storyline door that some audience members are uncomfortable with. This feature isn’t a dig, or a high-five to the writing staff for doing so. Soap operas have purposely explored topical, as well as controversial subjects for decades.
The issue of Mariah’s sexuality was invented in order to address what seems to be a well organized attempt across the globe to further identity issues. However, grouping people into so-called communities leaves others out. That analysis might be rejected by people who may be working for what they see as the overall good. But all acronyms that don’t include the entire human race aren’t inclusive.
This scribe doesn’t have the doubts that Mariah does. He’s heterosexual. However, he doesn’t doubt that other good souls throughout history and many who are alive today do struggle with what is understandably seen as a private issue. It’s not a matter of withholding or applying judgment. It’s a recognition of common sense.
Mariah is trying to understand if she’s homosexual, or possibly bisexual. Telling her to drop that pursuit, or to embrace it misses the point in both instances. What the Mariah’s of the world need is understanding and encouragement to determine the truth for oneself. That’s where Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) comes into the picture.
Grimes’ history on Y&R is well known. She was an astounding child actor. Her current storyline will prove if she is simply a good adult actor, as she appears to be, or a great one. Fairbanks joined the cast earlier this year. Her efforts to-date have been superb. So it will be interesting to see how her character fits into this arc, as Tessa may also be bisexual.
Anyone who questions another person’s identity is a fool. Why would one person ever be an expert on the life of another? Yet that question appears to be shrugged off by know-it-alls within all identities. Mariah should share her feelings with Devon. He’s a compassionate person and would surely offer heartfelt understanding. Then, Mariah should also tell Tessa how she feels.
Both conversations would be risky, but should take place. Together these three good people will help each other. That would be solid soap. CDL is a leading source for everything linked to The Young and the Restless. Check back regularly for Y&R spoilers and news!
