General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that one iconic soap star is dealing with a tough loss right now. Constance Towers’ (Helena Cassadine) husband, John Gavin, has passed away at the age of 86. Her rep confirmed the news to Hollywood Reporter, so GH fans are thinking about Towers during this difficult time.
Viewers are quite familiar with Towers’ work on General Hospital, but Gavin had a long acting career as well. He starred in several notable films, including Psycho and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Gavin met Towers through his godfather, a songwriter named Jimmy McHugh. The lovebirds quickly hit it off and were married in 1974.
Gavin branched out from showbiz by accepting an offer from President Ronald Reagan in 1981. As a skilled leader and fluent Spanish speaker, Gavin was deemed a good fit for the role of Ambassador to Mexico. He took the position and served in it until resigning in 1986. Gavin also became the president of the Screen Actors Guild in the 70s.
On Friday, many filmmakers sent out tweets to mourn the loss and celebrate Gavin’s life. One of them was William Friedkin, a director and close pal to Gavin. He said, “A sad day, my great friend John Gavin died this morning. One of the finest men I knew.” Friedkin added that Gavin was like a brother to him and urged his buddy to rest in peace.
Soap fans have also been voicing their support for Towers online. She doesn’t have a Twitter account, but people take comfort in sending out positive vibes anyway. It’s hard to lose a loved one, especially a spouse. Towers and Gavin have always been a beautiful couple.
GH watchers love when Towers comes back to visit as Helena, even in visions or flashbacks. General Hospital spoilers aren’t pointing to a return at the moment, but everyone can reflect on the scenes of the past. For now, Towers needs time to grieve and heal.
