American Idol is back tonight with its Celebrity Duets. The first duet tonight is Walker Burroughs and his celebrity duet partner, Jason Mraz, singing his song, “Have It All.”

Judges Comments: Luke: “Great job bud, the way you were able to sing the harmony parts with him, and it just sounded like you guys were meant to be on stage together. You make us smile, you make us root for you, you never let us down.” Lionel: “I’m watching you and the wonderful part about you is that you actually make a pair of glasses sexy. The most important part is I think, you are having the best time of your life. That was a perfect performance.” Katy: “I thought you were so cool and composed, you came out here, you guys had a secret handshake. Everything was no big deal and was so much fun.”

Next is Kate Barnette and celebrity duet partners, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, singing their song “Heartbreaker.”

Judges Comments: Katy: “I thought you grew up with that song. Pat sounds amazing. I thought you were a really great compliment, you were just having fun.” Luke: “I think it took you out of your comfort zone a bit, we’ve seen you with your hat the whole time, you probably learned some things about yourself being up there with Pat, good job.” Lionel: “It was wonderful seeing her up on stage and seeing your reaction to her. Having someone with that kind of pedigree on stage with you is everything. You take what you experienced on this stage tonight, put it in your memory bank and use it for the rest of your life.”

Riley Thompson’s celebrity duet partner is Brett Young and they are singing his song, “Like I Love You.”

Judges Comments: Lionel: “You have grown so much. Every time we think you’ve reached the peak of what you are going to do. I remember you are 16 years old, but you are handling this pressure so well and I am so proud of you. That was a really great performance.” Katy: “Our jaws were all on the floor because I thought you only had that breathy sultry sound and you gave us a full voice, you were doing those harmonies and it was like where did that voice come from. I am really impressed.” Luke: “That was your best performance that we’ve seen in you. You looked like a real natural seasoned performance with another natural seasoned performer. Way to go, great job.”

Uche’s celebrity duet partner is Shaggy and they are singing his song, “I Need Your Love.”

Judges Comments: Katy: “It was such a vibe, it was so fun, the only thing is really making conscious choices with the runs.” Luke: “You just bring natural energy of excitement, fun and when you do that you can have a little slip vocally and nobody is caring. You are having fun with this stuff and that is so contagious.”

Madison Vandenburg is the second hopeful to team up with celebrity duet partners Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, singing their song, “We Belong.”

Judges Comments: Luke: “I have seen this so many times where a singer gets put with a world-class belter like Pat and for you to sit there and go toe to toe with her is incredible, you don’t know how to hit a wrong note.” Lionel: “If there was us back in the day when we started, we never could have done with you did. I expected you to hyperventilate. You took it to the next level.” Katy: “First and foremost, you look flawless, you look like a star. Whatever you did was great, your voice is like a Ferrari, never be afraid to show off your Ferrari.”

Shawn Robinson pairs up with celebrity duet partner Elle King, singing “Proud Mary.”

Judges Comments: Lionel: “Its very simple, when things go right, they go really right and when they go wrong, nobody is supposed to know. You and Elle took care of business, your voice was on point, I loved the way that you recovered from something that we knew nothing about.” Katy: “I loved that intro, it reminded me of why we fell in love with your silky voice, it was so powerful, it was so strong. You shined today.” Luke: “I think you got as Lionel said, we have made multiple mistakes, but what was amazing was your run at the end. Be proud of what you did up there. it was a great vocal performance.”

Rosie, 9:36 PM
Ashley Hass is thrilled to be partnered with celebrity duet partner Jason Mraz, singing “I’m Yours.”

Judges Comments: Katy: “First of all I love this vibe, it’s cool and hip. I have heard that song many times but the way you guys sang it, it was so fresh and you really followed along with him.” Luke: “I just kept going, this feels really right. I just felt really comfortable watching the whole thing go down.” Lionel: “This is going to be the hardest decision of our lives, you are making it difficult for us. You were pristine and your voices were locked together.”

Bumbly is paired up with celebrity duet partner Shaggy for his second pairing of the night, and they are singing “Angel.”

Judges Comments: Luke: “That was really great vocally. It was a lot of fun. You complimented the song, we love when you put Spanish in there too.” Katy: “You are so cute, I love the sound of your voice, it is so fun, it has some grit, some rasp and some smokiness to it. You should be singing songs like this, a fun vibe.” Lionel: “How many times do you get to perform in your early career with Shaggy who put your name in the lyrics of the song. You looked like you were having the best time of your life.”

Lacy Kaye Booth is shocked that her celebrity duet partner is Brett Young, they are singing. “Mercy.”

Judges Comments: Lionel: “That was an incredible performance, it was so believable. A lot of times people can do songs all day long, but you don’t believe it. I actually thought I was seeing a serious love affair on that stage because it was delivered so well. I applaud you 100%, this is going to be big for you.” Katy: “The moment you walk on stage you sprinkle stardust everywhere. I thought I was watching something on the Grammys. I don’t want to play favorites, but.” Luke: “When you sing it hits you right in the heart. Especially when you sing a song about heartbreak, you make it the worst heartbreak ever. It is an amazing gift you have.”

Lane Hardy is the last hopeful performing tonight and he is paired with a celebrity duet partner, Elle King. They are singing, “The Weight.”

Judges Comments: Katy: “You look like a rockstar, the guitar, you sound like a rockstar. I can see that you love it and you are not letting go.” Luke: “No matter what happens after tonight, your voice is so recognizable, I am just excited to see what songs find you.” Lionel: “You have really stepped up, the talent is in you, you have developed into an absolutely wonderful artist.”

The spotlight shifts to the judges, they have to decide which three of the contestants will go home. There is tension on stage.

The first person to make it through is Laci Kaye Booth, then Ashley Hess, Walker Burroughs, Madison VanDenburg, Uche, Riley Thompson and Laine Hardy.

Kate Barnette, Shawn Robinson, and Bumble have hit the end of the road and are going home.

THE END!
