The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers reveal that the CBS soap is throwing a new character in the mix. According to Soap Opera Digest, Chase Coleman is joining the Y&R cast as Tanner Watts. Tanner is a popular recording artist with a past connection to another character in Genoa City. It’s a short-term role, but Tanner should bring some intriguing story possibilities along with him.
If you were a One Life to Live fan, you may remember Coleman from his 2006-2007 run as Garrett. Coleman has also been featured on primetime shows like Boardwalk Empire, The Americans, The Originals and more. On the music side of things, Coleman’s band is called Mercy Mode. It’s “a musical collaboration between Chase Coleman and Micah Parker” according to the band’s Twitter bio.
Mercy Mode’s latest single Take It All is available on Spotify and iTunes if you want to check it out. It might offer a little taste of Coleman’s sound and what we’re in for when Tanner hits GC. Then again, Tanner could have a different style entirely! It all depends on how The Young and the Restless writers take the character and what kind of story they’ve cooked up.
Speaking of that story, who does Tanner have a past connection to? The fact that Tanner is a recording artist seems like a huge hint that he’ll be working with someone musical, so Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) is a good option. It’s possible Tessa knew Tanner back in Chicago before they both made it big. Tanner might reach out to Tessa in hopes of collaborating on a new song.
Of course, Theo Vanderway (Tyler Johnson) also has a background in the recording industry. He happens to be from Chicago as well, so there could be some overlap. Y&R fans know Theo offered to help Tessa with her career before basically harassing her to hook up. Tessa obviously wasn’t interested, and they haven’t really been in each other’s orbit since then. This could be an opportunity for the new-and-improved Theo to make things right.
Tessa did a Jabot promotion as part of her video for Love Me, so it’s possible Theo will come up with another Jabot-related promo. There might be something Tessa, Tanner and Theo can all work on together. Since Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) has been Tessa’s imagemaker at Power Communications, she would certainly be part of a story like that, too.
However, we should note that Tessa’s time in Chicago doesn’t exactly evoke pleasant memories. She’s from a rough area and has dealt with plenty of rotten men, so who knows exactly what’s lurking under the surface with Tanner? He’s a mysterious character, which leaves the door open for some trouble.
Whatever the case, it’s refreshing to read about a different storyline instead of just the usual stuff. This should be a nice change of pace and will hopefully result in the release of some new music. Coleman’s debut is currently set for January 3, but keep in mind that preemptions could affect his first airdate.
