Days of Our Lives (DOOL) spoilers reveal that Greg Vaughan is speaking out about his upcoming exit as Eric Brady. As DOOL viewers may have heard, Vaughan wrapped filming before the shutdown and won’t be returning when production resumes in September. Eric’s onscreen departure is still to come, but let’s talk about why Vaughan chose to leave the role behind.
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Vaughan opened up about what he called “a difficult decision.” Although Vaughan loves his Days family, his priority is his own blended family. Vaughan has three sons and his fiancée, Angie Harmon, has three daughters.
The DOOL star made it clear that being a father is his “No. 1 job,” so he measures his success and happiness by how present he can be with them.
However, Vaughan also had some issues with the writing at Days. According to Vaughan, DOOL Head Writer Ron Carlivati didn’t deliver on his promises. “I thought that having the ability to share my thoughts, or my take on where Eric should go, with Ron, communication was going to happen,” Vaughan admitted. “And a lot of things that were said to me or promised to me never came to fruition.”
Vaughan talked about how feeling somewhat disconnected, especially as the direction of the show became messy. Although there was a push behind the scenes to convince him to stay, Vaughan just didn’t feel like there was a focus on Eric or his pairing with Nicole Brady (Arianne Zucker).
There was no growth, so Vaughan always felt like he was supporting other stories instead of playing out his own.
“I felt like a glorified extra in everybody else’s storyline, and I never felt like Ari [Zucker, Nicole] and I were given a, ‘Hey, you’re going to be our couple,’” Vaughan said. “So, it was time.” Vaughan finished out his contract at Days of Our Lives and determined he needed to move on.
That said, Vaughan was told the door would be left open for his return. It’s definitely a “never say never” situation, but Vaughan’s ready to spread his wings for now. As other Days updates emerge, we’ll keep bringing you updates.
