General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that there are several characters on canvas who could use reboots and fresh storylines. Elizabeth Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst) is certainly one of them, so let’s talk about what isn’t working and lay out some changes that need to happen in 2021.
For starters, we should acknowledge that Herbst is a fantastic actress who brings heart and soul to the role of Elizabeth. No matter what story Herbst is playing, she commits to it and gives it her all. General Hospital has a valuable cast member here, so they just need to start making the most of Herbst’s potential.
One easy way to do that is to stop making nearly every story Liz is involved in about Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth)! There was all the Jim Harvey (Greg Evigan) drama and Franco’s past with Drew Cain (Billy Miller). Then, Franco confessed to Ryan Chamberlain’s (Jon Lindstrom) murders as part of a plan to flush him out.
We also watched Elizabeth cope with Franco turning into a version of Drew through memory-mapping. Now Franco’s brain tumor is back and he’s hearing Peter August’s (Wes Ramsey) voice following his recent surgery. There are just so many Franco-centric storylines that it makes Liz a glorified cheerleader most days.
Even the stories that aren’t about Franco tend to be about Elizabeth’s kids. There’s very little focus on Liz as a person. She’s simply a devoted wife and mom, which would be great if there were some Elizabeth-centric stories mixed in.
It’s nice that Liz and Franco are a solid couple, but everything doesn’t have to be about Franco!
Some GH fans have even complained that Cameron Webber (William Lipton) gets better material that his mom, so it’s obvious that some changes are needed when it comes to Liz. Herbst deserves a chance to shine as Elizabeth, so how might General Hospital writers achieve that?
There’s always been a big push for some old family members of Elizabeth’s to come on canvas. Even just bringing Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig) back might help if she can get Liz caught up in some trouble.
If GH must keep doing health crisis storylines for “Friz,” maybe it’s Elizabeth’s turn instead of it always being Franco in the hospital bed. General Hospital could even go for a love triangle, especially if Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) were to return.
A Lucky recast might be an option to mull over for a future story with “Friz” – one that highlights Liz and her revived feelings for Lucky.
Whatever the case, it’d be great to see the focus shift to Elizabeth at some point. Rebecca Herbst is an important GH staple who can deliver when she’s given the right stuff! We’ll keep you posted as other news and updates emerge.
