In tonight’s The Resident episode, the episode begins with Mina looking at a photo of the Chastain team, then the phone rings and it is AJ, he tells her that their Nigerian adventure starts tonight when they get on their flight; he laughing tells her that he is her neck pillow.
One last shift and their adventure wait. AJ is with his dad, he says he is putting his records in storage and asks that he checks them now and then. AJ’s mom is having a hard time, she tells him that when he was away from camp, he wrote her every single day. He says that he is a momma’s boy. And, even though he loves Mina, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love her.
Cain is practicing using his hands again, Billie Sutton is in the room with him and she introduces herself; Cain is his usual “not pleasant” self. Cain has successfully performed all his prerequisites and a request has been put in to get him back on the surgical schedule.
A 16-year old female, Lisa McBride, is brought into the ER, she has a traumatic neck injury following a diving accident. Devon and Irving tend to her. Lisa’s BP is dropping, she starts to get afraid. Conrad walks into the room, she tells him that her legs and arms are all tingly. Lisa is terrified, she asks them to call her mom.
Kitt sees Cain in the hallway, she tells him that she is surprised to see that he is back on her surgical board. She tells him that he doesn’t pick up a scalpel until she has cleared him, her hospital, her rules. She says she will be standing by him for his surgery back, and he says he doesn’t need a babysitter. She replies that she doesn’t need a neuro-surgeon with authority issues. He gives in and says he looks forward to working with her.
AJ is in surgery, and he gets emotional about leaving. Meanwhile, Nic is looking for Mina, who walks in with items that she returns to everyone that she borrowed. Nic says she was thinking about when they first met, Mina tells her not to do that, she is not dead and this is not a Hallmark movie.
Lisa’s mother shows up at the ER, Conrad tells her that her daughter is in surgery, she needs to let them do their job.
Lisa is in surgery, Cain is the lead surgeon, Kitt is there as well. Cain begins and Kitt kept a close eye on him.
AJ is in the ER with Conrad, his mom is sitting on a stretcher and his dad is with her. Her father says they brought her in because she was dizzy, he thinks she drinks too much caffeine. Her exam seems to be normal, they are waiting for blood results to come back. AJ speaks to Conrad to the side and tells him that his mom can be a bit of a hypochondriac.
Devon tells Mina that he has his first match by the Indian matchmaker who was in the ER last week. Mina grabs his phone to look at her photo, it Dr. Leela Devi who at that moment walks up to Devon and tells him that Rose, his sickle cell patient, had her test results come back and they are normal.
Devon then goes to speak to Rose and tells her about her results, she says she feels good and it’s sad because she knows it is only temporary and she will never escape that for the rest of her life. He tells her that there have been clinical trials, there may be a cure.
Cain is in surgery, Kitt is watching closely. Kitt is needed in the ER, she is reluctant to leave Cain. She tells him that he seems to have made a miraculous recovery, good job.
In the cafeteria, Mina asks AJ how his mom is doing, he says fine, she probably just got herself worked up about his leaving. He tells her that they are now the Beyoncé and Jay-Z of Chastain. AJ gets a page and has to go. Conrad tells AJ’s mom that she is fine, she is sorry that she made such a fuss, made it all about her on AJ’s last day. Conrad tells her it is still important that she came in, especially when things are hard. AJ walks up and his mom tells him that she wants to go home.
In surgery, Cain is having a problem and Dr. Sutton gives advice, but he is not listening. He wants to wait and she tells him that if he does she is going to be brain dead.
Devon asks Conrad if he can fill in for him for an hour, he may have found Rose a clinical trial. Devon says he won’t get Rose involved in anything that he doesn’t believe in, they love Rose and want this to work out for her, Conrad doesn’t trust big pharma.
Nic is walking down the hall with Mina who says that she is going to miss her, but she is not going to cry and break down. Nic says she is going to get the goodbye she wants, she can count on it.
Devon is visiting his friend regarding the clinical trial for Rose. Phillip wants Devon to propose this to Chastain, Devon tells him that if Kitt Voss thinks this is about profit, she will through them out.
AJ takes his parents home, his mother says she is sorry, she just thought about how much she is going to miss him and not how happy he is going to be in this new adventure. His mom starts coughing, and there is blood coming out of her mouth, they are taking her back to Chastain.
AJ is looking at the results of his mother’s chest x-ray, his mother has a tumor in her lung. He says he will do the surgery himself, Conrad says no, it is a conflict of interest. Mina says she will do it. AJ has to go tell his mother. She doesn’t understand, she says she never smoked. He tells her that it could be benign and as far as they can tell, they found it early. She asks him what her chances are, he says biopsy first, Mina will do it, she is the best.
Phillip meets with Kitt, Devon is there as well. Kitt says she wants a cure of course, and Rose deserves the best, but she doesn’t want to get into bed with big pharma. Phillip says they are not big pharma. Kitt agrees to consider it, she discusses it with Randolph.
AJ is wheeling his mother into surgery, she tells him that whatever happens to her, he wants her to go with Mina, live his life and enjoy. He thanks her and kisses her on the forehead.
Devon approaches Leela in the hallway, he tells her that he is working with a matchmaker and on her site, he saw her photo. She says her dad wants her to have an arranged marriage, she did it to make him happy. He says the same as her, his mother keeps pushing. They smile and she leaves.
Mina is in surgery with Randolph, he tells her is proud of her and he will miss working with her.
Lisa is awake from surgery, Billie saved her life. Conrad says we all do stupid things at her age. Lisa got fired from her job, her boss dropped off her first and last payment.
Kitt and Devon tell Rose about the trial, there is a place for her, and she can start next month. Cain is walking down the hall, Rose sees him and she tells him about the clinical trial. He says it could work, but he doesn’t look happy. He is about to leave, she tells him to wait. She tells him she is going out to have pretzels and beer, he knows where she will be, he is welcome to be with her.
In surgery, the tumor is worse than they thought. Mina tells them to close up, there is no reason to put her through the rest of the surgery. Outside the operating room, Mina finds AJ, he is sitting down on a bench. The biopsy confirmed it, his mother has stage four lung cancer. He tells her that they both know the average life expectancy is two years. She tells him that he can’t go with her, he has to stay with his mother and she would do anything to be beside him, but she can’t. AJ is crying.
We see AJ with his mom and dad, Mina is watching through the window, she walks around the corner and breaks down, starts crying. Then life at Chastain starts to run through her mind, she calls a taxi. Mina goes up to the café to say goodbye to Nic and everyone is there to say goodbye to her. Kitt sees that Mina looks strange, she gives her a drink, and Mina downs it. Kitt hugs her and asks how they are ever going to replace her.
Conrad tells her that they love her and don’t want her ever to forget them. Mina says that they know exactly who she is and they still cared about her, and she hasn’t had a lot of people like in her life before. She says, they are her family and she loves them, she always will. Nic walks Mina out, she asks her to keep an eye on AJ for her. She tells Nic that he has to be there for her mother while she is going through treatment, it is the right thing to do. She tells her to call her when he is falling apart, she wants to be there for him. Mina tells her that she will miss her the most.
AJ is outside, he is seeing Mina in the taxi and tells her that he loves her. She says she loves him too, they kiss and hug. He said he thought they would be doomed from the start, she tells him that this is not over, not yet.
Mina leaves in the cab, she watches AJ outside the hospital, he is crying.
