Tonights This Is Us episode begins with Jack getting a call that his mom died. He tells Rebecca it doesn’t seem real, he feels like she is going to call on Sunday and check on the kids. Jack packs his bags, he is going alone and tells Rebecca that he is going to take off soon before the blizzard hits. Rebecca wants to go with him but he wants to go alone, he says he has a lifetime of loose ends to tie up and he would rather do it by himself.

Jack leaves and the snow is starting. He thinks back to being in the car with his mother, he is driving her to Ohio to live. He tells her that every Sunday, six o’clock he will be by the phone, she should call and he promises to not miss a call. Jack is at Debbie’s house, his mom’s cousin where she was living. Debbie made all the arrangements but Jack’s mom had made all the arrangements, she didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. Debbie asks him to do the euligy, she is not good at that.

Jack goes up to his mother’s room, he looks around . He thinks back to a conversation that he had with his mother, she had called her husband because she wanted some of her things, but she says it was a bad idea. Back to Jack being in his mom’s room, a cat jumps on the bed and looks at him. Jack goes down to the kitchen and asks Debbie if she called his dad, she says no way is she calling him. Jack finds out that the cat belonged to his mother, and she had a boyfriend, Mike, that lives a few houses away and the cat lives with him now.

Jack brings the cat back to Mike who says the cat doesn’t understand that Marilyn is gone and keeps going back to Debbie’s house. Mike says he is nervous, this isn’t how he pictured them meeting. Mike pulls out some photos of him and Jack’s mom. Jack sees the photos and in a lot of them his mom is laughing, he never saw that, she was always on high alert when she was living with his dad. Mike tells Jack that he got her out of that house, Jack says he is no hero.

Jack thinks back to another call that he had with his mom, he asks her when she is going to visit her grandkids, she promises soon. Jack rushes the call and says I love you, but doesn’t give his mom a chance to respond. Jack then goes to the café where his mom met Mike and orders himself a coffee. Later, he goes to a bar and by chance Debbie and Mike are there with a friend having drinks. They start talking about Marilyn and Jack looks uncomfortable.

Jack returns to the house and calls his father, he tells him that his mother died two days ago. His father says he is sorry, it is terrible news. He tells his father that he missed his mother’s whole life because of him. Jack tells him not to show up at the funeral, his father says she was his wife and he will do what he damn well pleases.

Jack wakes up on the couch the next morning, the cat is sleeping on top of him. Jack tells Debbie that he made a mistake, he called his dad. Debbie leaves the room, she is upset. Jack goes upstairs to find a dress for his mother, he gets close to the bed and notices a box, he looks into it and sees skates with the kids name on it. Jack calls Rebecca, he tells her that he never took the kids to the pond near his mom’s house to ice skate.

We see a younger Jack, he arrives home from tobogganing, he broke his toboggan and his mother says they will hide it, his father will never know. Back to Marilyn’s service, Debbie does a reading of a poem that she wrote. Jack gets up, he starts by saying that he loved his mother. All of a sudden, Rebecca and the kids walk in, they sit in the back. He continues, the house he grew up in wasn’t easy for a kid, but it wasn’t easy for a mother either.

They did their best, the two of them, they were lucky because they got out. But when you live in a house like that, there is a part of you that never gets out. So, you build a new house, for a better life. And you try as much as you can that the part of living in that old house is as little as possible in you. He did his best, there were so many bad details that he tried to forget. He thanks everyone there for being there for his mom, as her son, he is very grateful to them all.

After the service, everyone goes back to the house, Mike plays with the kids. Jack looks at the skates, the kids put them on and everyone heads to the pond skating.

They arrives home after the funeral and Jack makes hotdogs and tomato soup like his mother used to make for him. Jack gets up and leaves the table, he is about to cry. Rebecca goes in the living room where Jack is standing, he tells her that he doesn’t have a mom anymore and starts crying, she hugs him. Jack wipes up his tears and they return to the kitchen to be with the kids.

THE END!
