Tonight’s This Is Us episode begins with a young Kevin filling out a valentine to Anna. Now we fast forward to one day before Kate and Phillip’s wedding. Phillips’ cousin Oliver opens a conversation with Kevin and tells him they are the only two single ones there. Randall walks in and tells Kevin to stop staring at the door, he knows he is looking for Sophie to walk in, Randall reminds him that she is a married woman.
Ariel, the wedding singer, walks up to Kevin and gives him a hug, she is trying to get away from Oliver, who then leaves. Kevin tells her the coast is clear. Sophie is at the front desk, they have the wrong luggage. Kevin walks up and asks how they fix this, the hotel clerk says the stores close in a half hour. Sophie tells him her husband couldn’t make it, he offers to drive her to town. They arrive in town and the store is closed, she sees a dry cleaner across the street and they head over there. Sophie asks about unclaimed clothes.
She says she is in town for a wedding and the airport lost her luggage. The owner takes her to the back of the store. She finds a dress and goes to try it on, it fits. Next, they go into a grocery store and talk while they are walking around. She tells him that she has become a traveling nurse. He tells her last year Nicky fell and the first thing he thought was to call her. He tells her that she seems really happy.
She says she is, and she is also divorced. He says he really liked the guy, she tells him that she is fine now, it had been over for a while, they were just going through the motions and it forced her to grow up. She asks him if he was dating, and he tells her that he was in a relationship but it fizzled. He focuses on his kids and his non-profit, he doesn’t really focus on dating. She is cole, so he gives her his jacket.
Kevin is near the fire pit with the kids and Sophie is watching him, smiling. She gets up and walks away, he follows her and catches the same elevator. He walks her to her room and she invites him in. They start making out and he makes a comment about how he always loved the way her hair smelled. She stops, gets up, and says she has to leave. He asks her what did he do and she says he should love the way her hair smells now not how it smelled then. He says he is so confused. She says she and Grant had this inside joke, when Kevin was on TV he would fast forward. She says she could never fast forward him, she always carried him with her and it is too much, she can’t go backward. He says he doesn’t want to go backward. She says she is sorry and she leaves the room.
Kevin then ends up down at the bar where the wedding singer is having a drink. They talk a bit and then he calls it a night. On his way to his room, Nicky comes out of his and asks him what is wrong. He tells Nicky that he hates weddings. Kevin says he is done with love, then Cassidy asks him to help her with her dress, the zipper is stuck. She tells him that she really needs to find someone, she can’t bother him every time she needs her dress unzipped. She leaves the room, but before that asks him if he is ok and he says yes.
It is now the wedding reception, Randall asks Kevin what happened last night and he says Sophie is now a single woman. Elsewhere, Sophie tells Rebecca that her song was really beautiful. Rebecca sits down beside her, she tells Sophie that she loves her son but he is an idiot. He is twenty years old and the timing is off right now, he is not ready for her, he will be, but it is going to take a while. And, she doesn’t know if she can wait around for that but when the timing is right, he is going to be so great. Sophie smiles and says yes.
Randall says to Kevin the woman he pined over for years is single and he is depressed about it. Kevin says he just doesn’t want to ruin anything. Randall gives him advice, he says the world is insane, but he and Sophie make sense and he is not going to screw it up this time. Kevin goes to see Sophie, he tells her that he doesn’t want her to be a ball that he bounces off to get to another ball. She tells him that she spent years of her life praying that he would grow up, and now here he is, twenty years later and he is finally the man she knew he could be.
She never thought they could be at the right place at the right time. She is the best version of herself and so he is. She freaked out last night because she didn’t want them to fall back into the old version of themselves. She needs him to love her for who she is now, she wants to fall in love with the man who he is now. He pulls out a photo in his wallet of the valentine he made her in grade school, which he still had there. He always carried it with him. She kisses him, the whole family is behind them and they clap.
