On tonight’s DDWTD premiere episode, what’s changed with the family? Well, Karen wasn’t pregnant. The kids were all growing up. The youngest were turning three and they were about to start preschool. They were going to be homeschooled for now, but that might change later down the road.
Especially as they didn’t really have the space for it at their current house. The house was crowded. It would be with fourteen kids. Space was also taken up by projects. Karen wanted to start an online children’s clothing store. Deon and most of the kids were also making an album. There were musical instruments everywhere. There were kids clothes everywhere. And its hard right now because it was Summer for them.
The kids were out of school for the summer. Darian was a teenager and she tried in-person school for several months. She doesn’t think it’s for her. She said school was less about the academics and more about looks and popularity. She didn’t like it. She wants to stay homeschooled because she believes she learns more at home. Only her grandmother still wanted to encourage her to go to a physical school. GG wants Darian to be able to socialize with her peers. Darian was already interested in boys and how she was going to meet any at home?
Darian was one of the main complainers about the house being too small. She wanted her own space. She wasn’t getting that at home or at traditional school, but they desperately need more space. Deon was another major complainer. He tried to warn Karen from buying more stuff for her store. He was actually stress eating because of all the boxes that Karen has delivered to the house and he has gained some weight. He wants to lose the weight. He also wanted Karen to get on top of her management style.
The house not being in order has him stressed. He wanted to know why Karen couldn’t get the items delivered elsewhere or at least wait until the business was up and running on its own before ordering more stuff. He failed to see that Karen was also stressed. Karen was starting a new business from scratch. It wasn’t easy because she was both black and a woman. She has to push through several glass ceilings to get her place running on its own and so she needed Deon to be patient. She was starting a business as well as raising fourteen kids.
The family thankfully don’t need to be as worried about GG as before. GG’s cancer came back last season. She started nontraditional chemo. She has Eric taking care of her. He moved in with her after she was diagnosed and he’s stepped up a godchild. He had to take a step back from helping out with the kids only again the kids were getting older and they didn’t have small ones in diapers anymore. But Deon made sure that it was him that drives his mother to her doctor appointments. He was her sole surviving child since his brother passed and he knows how much time together means to her.
GG also asked for advice because she wants to start dating again. She wants to try online dating because she doesn’t really get to go out and so Darian helped her build a profile. She also took photos of GG for her profile. The photos were fun. Hearing what GG was looking for in a man was not. She was looking for companionship and she doesn’t mind a situationship. She put it in her profile that she won’t mind late night calls because she was looking for that as well. She also wanted an umph factor and Karen regretted asking what that was.
Darian soon finished that profile for her grandmother. They posted it and they were scouring through the guys on the site when Deon came up with a new family rule. He said no screens during the summer. He saw all fourteen of his kids on a screen at the same time and it made him see what they were missing. Even his youngest was watching a screen. She knew more about that screen than she does about her siblings and so Deon fixed that. He saw no one was enjoying quality time or playing traditional games like he did as a kid. And he came up with the rule to fix that.
The kids like to joke that Deon grew up before tv, but he loved his childhood and he wanted to share that with the kids. He came up with no screen rule as a way to get them interested in each other again. Deon wants his family to spend quality time together. He brought them to a dance studio and he taught them the hustle. He loves dancing. He got it from his mother. GG always used to encourage her own children to dance and that’s where their love of it comes from. They really loved dancing together.
Deon even taught dancing for a while. He taught his kids that dance and then he started to get tired. He wasn’t as healthy as he was when he was a kid. His own children all noticed him gasping for air and so they came up with a plan. They were going to sabotage the quality time together. They knew their father. They knew how to act up his OCD. They made themselves be as loud as humanly possible and Deon came to regret taking their screen time away because he stopped hearing his own thoughts it was so loud. And he couldn’t work at home.
He couldn’t deal with all the boxes on top of it. Deon had to walk out and just check out for a bit. He annoyed his wife by doing so because she doesn’t get to check out like that. Karen said Mommys have to stay. She originally planned on stepping out for a bit, but how can she do it if he also left?
