In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Sergeant Voight will be out for a few days. He had to leave town. He asked Detective Upton to check on things for him. She was following a new lead on their serial killer and it got nowhere. The lead proved to be false. The killer hasn’t made a move since killing the kid. He was laying low.

Upton was staying at the office to double check her work when a little girl came in. The little girl came to the police headquarters looking for police. Upton spotted her. She told her that she was a cop. She said she could help and the little girl handed her a note. The note said she escaped, but that her mother was Ruthie Zamora and she was still being held prisoner.

Ruthie Zamora disappeared nine years ago. She was fourteen at the time. She was also pregnant. She got into an argument with her mom about her boyfriend and she disappeared after that.

Everyone assumed she ran away. They didn’t know differently until the little girl walked in with a note. This reopens an investigation into the missing girl now woman. Upton contacted Detective Petrovic. She wanted her opinion. She instead got a drunk woman. This same drunk woman swore that she would drive to the hospital to talk to girl.

Upton had Atwater stay with the little girl. She meanwhile found the car wreck that was Petrovic. She really did crash her car and so Upton covered it up. She removed all signs of a car accident.

She drove back to her apartment with Petrovic. She threw her into the shower. She sobered her up. When Petrovic started being coherent again, Upton told her about the case. Petrovic was interested. She got back into a car with Upton believing they were going to the hospital to see the little girl. Upton instead drove her to a rehab center.

The rehab was the only way she keeps her job. She drove drunk. She could have killed herself and other people. She also crashed her police issued car. Upton was done protecting her.

She either gets clean or she loses the badge. She might still lose her badge if it comes out she went to rehab. Chicago Police Department wasn’t really open-minded about addiction. Petrovic has to dry herself out. She gets that done and maybe she’ll prove too valuable to fire. And so after Upton dropped her off, she went to the hospital.

The DNA tests came in. The little girl really was Ruthie Zamora’s daughter. The little girl’s name was Hope. Hope was eight years old. She lived with her mom in the basement of a monster. Hope was told to call him “Sir”. He wasn’t her father. Her biological father died in a car accident a few years ago. This older Latino man hurts her mom. Her mom said he was a monster. Ruthie was never allowed to leave the house. This man would take Hope to shop for new clothes once a year. Her mom told her to run away the last time and to find police. And that’s exactly what Hope did.

Hope wasn’t used to being out in the open for long. She’s only ever known her quiet house. She was blindfolded on the way to the mall and she hid at the mall for hours. The police found security footage of the man with Hope. They saw he was looking for her for hours before he left. Facial recognition wasn’t giving them a name. The man used fake license plates. They still tracked him from when he left the mall to when he returned to the house. They went rushing to the house only to learn it was too late.

Their kidnapper had already taken off with Ruthie. They got a bunch of fingerprints and that too was a dud. Their kidnapper was a ghost. He wasn’t in their system. Upton visited Petrovic at the rehab. Petrovic did look into Ruthie’s disappearance. She had plenty of notes. She just didn’t want to give them up until she had a drink. She tried to bribe Upton into getting her drink. When that didn’t work, she lashed out. She said that Upton was messed up by her drunk father and she was taking it out on her. Upton ignored her completely.

She also grabbed Petrovic’s keys on her way out. She went to Petrovic’s apartment. She found her notes. She saw that Petrovic said that something felt wrong and whatever it was it was about a couch. Upton couldn’t get answers from Petrovic. She went to the hospital where Ruthie’s mom was. Sonia learned that her daughter was alive and she rushed to the hospital to be at her granddaughter’s bedside. Only Hope said her grandma was pretending. She was pretending like the monster pretended to be a good person.

Upton had the team look into Sonia. Nothing was flagged. They did learn that she stopped spending after her daughter disappeared. She must have started using cash and lots of it. It turns out that Sonia knew a hacker who accessed the dark web. The hacker was arrested. His laptop was in evidence. Upton checked it with Petrovic. Petrovic checked herself out of rehab. She also explained the couch. She said that a month after Ruthie disappeared her mother bought a new couch. She redecorated her living room with this sudden cash flow like she had nothing to worry about.

Upton wanted to be mad at Petrovich, but they needed her. They accessed the hacker’s computer. It was revealed that the hacker helped Sonia sell her child to a pedophile. Sonia received a lot of cash for it. Especially as it was a two for one with Ruthie being pregnant. The pedophile will always have a victim. The police went back to the hospital. They tried to peacefully separate Sonia from Hope and Sonia wouldn’t have it. She freaked out. She realized they knew what she did. She tried to grab a hostage and she was taken down.

Sonia was screaming she’d been assaulted by the cops. She was claiming police brutality. She wasn’t going to help them find Ruthie and so it’s a good thing the hacker started talking when he heard about her arrest. He lowered his firewall to give cops full access to the site where Sonia sold her daughter. They tracked down the man she was sold to. They went to his house. He went for a gun and they were forced to kill him. They didn’t find Ruthie right away. Some feared she had been killed. And that’s when Upton remembered that the monster kept Ruthie in confined spaces.

She had everyone search that property. She eventually found Ruthie locked up in an air circulation system. Thankfully, she was alive. Ruthie was taken to a hospital to be reunited with her daughter. She had no clue that her mother sold her. She just knew at fourteen that her mother didn’t love her. Petrovic talked to Upton afterwards. She said her first memory was of her mother trying to drown her. Its why she became a cop. She wanted to know why. And later Petrovic checked herself back into the rehab.

She knows now that she needs help.

THE END!
