Things were still tense at the office. There’s been a lot of change within the Special Victims Unit. IAB Captain Curry was now working with them and they were joined by FBI Special Agent Sykes. Fin wasn’t taking change well. He still misses Rollins. He therefore makes a few comments here and there. He didn’t like that the new women have a desk in their office. But a case helped him gain perspective. They all became involved in the rape of a tourist. The rape happened at the tourist’s hostel.
Hostels were cheap places for mostly young tourists traveling by themselves. It was a way to save money as well as meet new people. Leah Tan was from Singapore. She was visiting New York City for the first time and she had too much to drink. Leah went out to the bars with a few new friends. The guys she was with were paying attention to her rather than to the other girl. The other girl then ditches Leah at the bar with the two guys. They all drank. They all hopped into the same cab. The guys left the cab first.
They actually left Leah alone. She took her now solo cab back to the hostel. The crime happened sometime that night. Leah couldn’t remember much because she was pretty out of it. She was deeply drunk. It was actually the friend that left her that brought her to the hospital. The friend’s name is Maura Ramos. Maura helped Leah more than she knew. Maura found Leah left alone in the shower with warm water running on her and Leah was barely conscious. Leah was knew enough to try and get rid of the evidence.
Maura brought Leah to a hospital. She also collected Leah’s underwear for evidence. She blamed herself for leaving Leah alone with those guys. She figures if she hadn’t been so jealous that she could have saved Leah. Leah meanwhile wasn’t doing so well because she didn’t want anyone to know about the rape. She didn’t want her parents to find out she was no longer a virgin. Maura that convinced her to go to the hospital. Leah agreed to a rape kit only she next booked a ticket back to Singapore.
Sykes said that tourists that suffer an injustice are quick to return home after a crime. There are statics proving that. They think if they go back home that they could pretend like it never happened. Leah was trying to do the same. Her booking that ticket meant that the cops had to find her rapist before she left town. They were now on a deadline. They had Leah come down to the station. They tried to talk her out of leaving. They told her that they found the two guys that might have raped her that night.
The guys’ names were Hayden Foote and Frederick Hwang. They were college students from out of town. They also didn’t pay any attention to Maura that night. Maura was a bombshell. She was looking to hook up as well. They completely ignored her to go after the prudish but still exotic Leah. Sykes suspected they were hunting in a pack. Only they didn’t have DNA. There was no DNA found in Leah’s rape kit. There were signs of forcible penetration that even Leah wants to deny. Leah later changed her story.
Leah said her father was a pastor in Singapore. He raised her to save herself for marriage. Leah was claiming that she was curious about oral sex and that she performed on Hayden before changing her mind. She’s claiming that Hayden didn’t do anything after she kissed him down there. The rape kit on the other hand was still saying she’s no longer a virgin. She was penetrated that night. She could deny it until she was blue in the face. The cops literally have evidence proving that a rape did happen that night.
It must have happened before they got into the cab. The cab driver was seen dropping her off at the hostel. The guys she was with took a cheap bus back to their college after they split up in the cab. They both attend an elite school. The detectives visited the school to the talk the guys when they saw their room. They had a map of the world with pins in all the countries they “visited”. It turns out all the guys in that dorm played this game with the map. They would have sex with a bunch of foreign women in order to score points from that country.
One of the guys wasn’t so good at the game. He started dating the young woman he slept with. Hayden and Frederick were different. They stayed away from American women because American women scare them. They didn’t want to deal with the sexual politics of their era. They miss the era when rape was possible and everyone just wrote it off as a bad night. The guys didn’t crack under pressure. Neither of them admitted to raping Leah. They were literally pins in Singapore showing that both slept with her and they wouldn’t admit it.
Then a Bulgarian woman came forward. Nikol was raped while staying at a hostel. She was raped two months before Leah was and she never reported it to the cops. She reported it to her consulate. They finally reported it to the cops. They also flew Nikol back to New York so that she could speak to the cops directly. Nikol visited New York to be there in Times Square during New Year’s Eve. She met three Americans. One left early from food poisoning. The other two stayed with her. They tried competing for her attention. It was less about her than it was about each other.
It got so bad that Nikol tried to leave because she felt uncomfortable. They then raped her to score a point from Bulgaria. She identified the guys. She also said she got a weird call from “23& Me” a week after the rape. They called to tell her that she has a family history of cystic fibrosis. Only she never gave a sample. The guys were taking DNA samples of all the women they raped to prove they slept with them. They had a fourth friend in the genetics department on campus trace the DNA. This fourth guy was able to tell them who had submitted Leah’s sample as he acted as the score keeper.
It was Dustin who raped Leah. He was the one that said he didn’t care about the game. He said he was committed to his Japanese girlfriend. It turns out he didn’t want to lose the game. He raped Leah. It was Hayden who raped Nikol. They also illegally collected their DNA. They were genetic proof to show it. And so Frederick flipped on the others to save himself.
All three boys were kicked out of school and two of them pleaded guilty to rape, but Leah couldn’t wait to put all of this behind her.
