Major Behind-The-Scenes Shake-Up On CBS Drama, FBI

CBS recently awarded FBI a three-season renewal, and off the cusp of it, the drama has had some behind-the-scenes changes. According to Variety, FBI’s showrunner, Rick Eid, will be stepping down.

Eid has been a showrunner on FBI since the series debuted in 2018. He remains an executive producer for the show and will serve as a showrunner for the fellow Dick Wolf series on NBC, Law & Order, which is heading into its 24th season.

Rick Eid Provides Official Statement On FBI Exit

Rick Eid released a statement on his exit as FBI’s showrunner, saying, “After six years of running two, or more, shows, and CBS now picking up FBI for three more years, this was the perfect time for me to step back and focus my efforts on running Law & Order and developing new projects. I’m extremely proud of FBI and couldn’t be happier for the cast, crew, and producers. While I will no longer be the day-to-day showrunner, I intend to remain involved with the show going forward.”

While it’s disappointing for him to be stepping back from FBI as a showrunner, considering how busy he is, this makes total sense. As he’s staying on as an executive producer, it looks like not too much will change.

Who Will Replace Rick Eid?

As of this writing, a replacement has not been announced. FBI will probably head into Season 7 production sometime this summer, and fans will learn about Eid’s successor then.

Rick Eid has been working with Dick Wolf and his shows for some time now. He was co-executive producer for Law & Order from 2005-2007 (Seasons 16 and 17) and returned to the show as showrunner and executive producer when the legal drama was revived in 2022.

Eid also served as executive producer on FBI: International, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago P.D., and supervising producer for Law & Order: Trial by Jury. His other credits include The Guardian, Dark Blue, and CSI – just to name a few.

Dick Wolf also chimed in on Rick’s FBI/showrunner exit, stating, “Rick has been a core member of the Wolf family for two decades. We thank him for all the work he did on FBI to get the series launched and look forward to continuing our creative partnership on Law & Order and beyond.”
