Despite being on the air for 25 years now, Law & Order: SVU’s Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson have yet to get together, even though the build-up to a romance has been there for a while.
Mariska Hargitay recently talked to Variety about the two characters “almost” locking lips in Season 24, and why they didn’t.

During Season 24, Episode 12, Benson and Stabler shared a nice moment together; however, no kiss unraveled, even though it seemed as if there was going to be one. Hargitay tells Variety, “To be honest with you, Chris and I thought it should go one way, and the powers that be didn’t, so it got changed at the last minute, that near kiss. Obviously Dick gets final say. It’s his show, and he didn’t want that.”
Will the two ever come together? Despite it being almost a quarter of a century for the show, Hargitay doesn’t count out a romance just yet. She goes on to note, “We want to hold the tension and do what’s right and truthful for both characters.”
Law & Order: SUV: Could Season 26 Be The Year For Benson & Stabler?
So, the bad news is fans never got that Benson/Stabler kiss in Season 24 (or yet in Season 25), but the good news is that as NBC has picked the show up for another year, there’s always that possibility it could happen during Season 26! The wait has been a long one for fans, but when the two finally reach in for a kiss, it’ll definitely be worth it!
While SUV how has been picked up for the 2024-2025 season, the status of their sister show, Law & Order: Organized Crime is a bit up in the air. Reports reveal it’s heading to the streaming platform Peacock for Season 5, so if this ends up happening, it’ll be interesting to see how the franchise handles crossovers.
