Bert was hospitalized. He fell down during an episode. It happened after he locked himself in his room. It cost him time that he needed when the orderlies were breaking down his door. He was going through Alzheimer’s and so he wasn’t his usual self. He was snappish. He was yelling at people. He never once yelled at Sharon all throughout their marriage. He was yelling at her now. It hasn’t been easy for either Bert or his loved ones. They were slowly losing him. They had three children together. David normally shows up when big events occur. He last saw his dad a year ago when they moved him into the nursing home.

A lot has changed since then. Bert has more bad days than good now. He thankfully wrote an advanced directive before his condition worsened. He said he didn’t want any type of surgery no matter what and that meant he didn’t want to treat his hematoma from his fall. Bert was going to be released without treatment. He’d return to his care home. He’ll wait until his conditions either recovers on its own or this is his last dance. David didn’t like that plan. He wanted to override the directive. He didn’t want his father to die.

David also hated how comfortable everyone else was with letting Bert die. He couldn’t see that they weren’t comfortable. They just made their peace with it. They’ve been there at Bert’s side for the past year. They’ve watched him get worse. They’ve seen him become nonverbal some days. This wasn’t quality of life. Their father was deteriorating before he fell. David’s siblings had time to say goodbye. It’s not their fault David didn’t give himself that same opportunity. He also didn’t want his mother to try calming him down either.

Sharon was trying to be supportive. She wanted to respect Bert’s final wishes. She also wanted to be there for her children as they take the final step with their dad. She tried to comfort him. Then she tried to reason with him. None of it worked. David wanted to legally challenge the advance directive. He said there was a legal loophole they could pursue. His siblings got angry at him for even considering it. They accused him of being arrogant. They said that he hasn’t been around and that he doesn’t get to make this about himself like he does with everything else.

That’s when David dropped the family secret. Bert wasn’t his biological father. Bert chose to love him and that was enough for David, but he struggled with mood swings his entire childhood because his parents wanted him to decide when to tell the family his secret. Not that his mom ever thought it was the time. Thereby making David feel like he has to keep this secret and that’s why he distanced himself from everyone. He was back now. His dad recognized him when he saw in a rare moment of lucidity. And David didn’t want to let that go.

Bert has always been the one to understand David. More so than his own mom. Bert was just a great dad in that sense and blood doesn’t mean everything. Take Ripley. Ripley was dating a single mom. Sadie’s daughter liked him so much that she accidentally called him daddy on tonight’s episode. Ripley hadn’t said anything because he knew they were going at Sadie’s pace. If Sadie felt the time was right, that’s when he’ll say something and until then he just acted like what little Emelia said was normal.

What wasn’t normal was Dr. Asher being there during the incident. It happened at the hospital. Hannah was super uncomfortable and Sadie was so nice that she just befriended her. They talked in the parking lot. Sadie admitted that she’s struggling with her prosthetic. She was in so much pain. She didn’t take Ripley because she knew he’d try to fix it and she didn’t think they could with her insurance. Asher advised her to just tell him. He’ll be there to support her no matter what she decides.

Asher wasn’t done giving advice. She also advised Naomi. Naomi and Dr. Frost have been flirting. Frost finally asked her out and she said no because they work together. She didn’t want to be defined by her relationship at the hospital. She talked to Asher about it. Asher told her to go after what she wants and sadly it was too late for that. She already said no to Frost. He was now flirting with a paramedic. They met when she brought in two kids that needed urgent care after they were stung by a hornet’s nest.

Sharon finally got David to see now was the time to say goodbye. They stayed by Bert’s side until it was over. Sadie also broke up with Ripley because she doesn’t think he loves her. He wants to love her and that wasn’t the same as actually loving someone.

And Dr. Lenox found her own kind of therapy by getting a tattoo after a patient convinced her to do it.
