In tonight’s Fire Country, the new Battalion Chief was coming in from outside. It was one thing if one of their own was promoted, but an outsider bent on destroying Vince’s legacy was the last thing they needed. It was a very bad idea so naturally it was Luke’s. Luke thought he was helping.

He thought that by addressing the higher ups himself that he could make sure that Sharon wasn’t in trouble. Nor that they won’t force her to return to work before she was ready. She was back at work now because she didn’t trust the new guy.

Vince used to hate Brett Richards. Now, Vince was dead and Brett got his job. Brett came in saying he wanted to tear down what was there before just to build up something stronger. He then forced the firefighters to run through the paces. He called them in on a 911 fire alarm.

They came rushing to work just to learn it was a test. There was no fire. Brett merely wanted to test their response time. He found them lacking when it took six minutes. He even took issue with Audrey. Audrey just got back. It was her first day back. She never got the chance to return home.

She went straight from her flight to Bode. She was talking to him when the alert came in. She took a little longer to get into uniform because again she just got in. Brett called her tardy. He then demanded that everyone line up. He had them answer fire questions.

He was throwing around a weighted ball towards them when they answered. He also pointed out that mistakes led to Vince’s death. It also led to the death of Brett’s mentor seven years ago. He transferred to the state after leaving Boston. And he’s been there for thirty years.

Brett was the Fire Academy with Vince and Sharon. He was the first to realize they were dating. He began talking about it and that’s how the anger started. Before it evolved into hatred. The hatred followed a few other things that Sharon doesn’t like talking about.

Brett wanted the firefighters to go back to the basics. Those at the station came up with a two prong plan. They were going to show him that they exceptional firefighters. They were also going to fall in line until Brett does something so egregious that Sharon either fires him or moves him to a different station.

Jake and Bode sorta came up with the plan together. They each came up with one part. Manny tried to be the peacemaker by saying let’s do both. Then they had their first call. They were called to a fire in the woods. It was supposed to be cleared of any housing or people. Until they saw a dog with a leash. It made them realize that the dog had an owner and that the owner was nearby. Jake, Bode, and Audrey were sent to go find the owner. What they found instead was an encampment. There was a lot of people that lost their homes during the Zabel Ridge Fire.

Sure, the county was trying to help. They offered resources at the firehouses. These people don’t want a handout. They wanted to help themselves and their stubbornness put them all in danger. There was a car stuck in the mud that was blocking the other cars. Some of these people lived in their cars. They couldn’t abandon them to leave on foot. Bode felt for them. Audrey too. They asked if they could move the stuck car and Jake agreed. Jake was a captain. He made the call to not force these people to lose everything again.

By time they moved that truck, the fire had spread. It spread into the trees. There was also someone who got electrocuted by stealing electricity from the city. The electrocuted man was named Joss. He got out in time thanks to the firefighters. Joss came to right before they took him to the hospital. He refused to go. He said he couldn’t afford the hospital bills. He signed a waiver relieving the firefighters of any responsibility yet he was living in the woods. He couldn’t even afford the ambulance ride much less a hospital bill with several tests and no health insurance.

The many vehicles kept running into problems if not creating new ones. One of them had a container full of gasoline on their roof that fell and no one noticed. It ignited with the fires in the trees right as the last car was leaving. The woman got out in time. Her dog was still trapped in the back. Bode asked to get the dog and Jake let him. Bode was almost killed. They got the dog and there was a massive explosion. Sharon was livid. She began to see Brett’s side of things after nearly losing her sole surviving child.

Brett also realized that Vince’s way of doing things wasn’t always consistent with what’s best. Three Rock was done. The council was selling the land that it once stood on and so the program was over with in Edgewater. Those men were going to serve somewhere else. Brett also took them all to task for what happened at that fire. He said that them not sticking to the rules was what killed Vince. It was going to kill one of them again if they didn’t stop being dead firefighters. And started being real firefighters.

Sharon agreed with him. Which caused Bode to swallow a pill that he then forced himself to throw back up. Bode nearly used drugs tonight and he’s isolating himself to stop anyone from seeing he isn’t okay. He was spiraling. Gabriela wasn’t around to stop him. Audrey couldn’t do it alone.

THE END!
