General Hospital (GH) spoilers report some very sad news, as actor Anthony Geary, best known for his work as Luke Spencer on the ABC soap, is dead at the age of 78.
The beloved and celebrated actor passed away on Sunday, December 14. His cause of death was noted as complications from a surgery conducted three days earlier.
Geary was an icon in the land of daytime drama, as he played the legendary Luke character, on and off, from 1978 to 2017.
The actor won eight Daytime Emmy awards during his time on the soap and was one half of the super couple (who started the soap ‘super couple’ term) of Luke and Laura (Webber – Genie Francis).
Luke and Laura’s wedding garnered an incredible viewership of 30 million fans when the two said their, ‘I do’s’ back in November 1981.
Geary and Francis not only appeared on the cover of Newsweek that year, but they were also on People, along with Elizabeth Taylor, a major GH fan who also had a guest appearance during their wedding shows, as Helena Cassadine.
With that said, Geary was also in a number of films over his acting career, including Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF, Carpool Guy, and You Can’t Hurry Love (among others), and had prime stints on The Mod Squad, The Partridge Family, and All in the Family, just to name a few.
He was also a lover of theatre and worked in more than 50 stage productions.
Still, a day before Geary was slated to enter the hospital for his surgery, he filmed a clip with Anders Hove (GH’s ex-Cesar Faison) for a project set to be released in the future.
This would mark Geary’s last work as an actor.
Some weeks ago, Anthony’s husband, Claudio Gama, posted a video of him watching old GH co-stars, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) and Genie Francis, during the State of Mind podcast.
Gama’s caption read, “It really made Tony very happy. He told me, ‘Those are two lovely and talented people, great friends, and I miss them.’”
