In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, Chief Lowen planned on stopping by the firehouse. He wanted to check out the new manpower. Or so he claimed.
Severide was worried that the man wanted to check up on him. He wanted to make sure that Firehouse 51 was running like it always does. Severide was worried about his performance review.
He then allowed it to become an issue. He rode his firehouse hard. He overrode Kidd for saying the probies weren’t ready to be reviewed. She tried to warn him. He chose to ignore her.
Violet and Novak also saw something suspicious on a call. It had been a psych call. They were called in to back up the cops that were already on the scene.
The cops said there was a heavily bleeding woman who locked herself in the storage closet at a supermarket. When the paramedics got there, the woman was still in the closet and the cops were threatening to break down the door. They didn’t care about her being in a mental health crisis. They wanted to drag her out and potentially arrest her by the way that one guy was going.
Violet chose to deescalate. She wasn’t afraid to stand up to the cops. She got them to move away and the woman trusted her enough to allow the paramedics to treat her afterwards.
She has a nasty cut on her arm. She was begging them not to send her back. She said she wasn’t allowed to leave that place. Violet promised to get her to the hospital for that arm treatment. It just never happened. The cops got a call that she broke out of a psych facility. They instantly returned her there without first seeking outside medical attention. One cop said she’s get treatment at the facility.
Something about the whole thing didn’t sit right with the paramedics. They weren’t allowed to follow Anita back to the facility. The cops chose to dump her there and they didn’t care about a follow up.
The paramedics went to Severide for permission. He gave them leave to check out the facilty and to speak to Anita again. It was the facility that refused to let the women talk. They were acting incredibly suspicious. Violet and Novak chose to ignore what really happened with Anita. And back at the firehouse, Severide was told about the real reason behind this surprise inspection.
There’s been chatter. There were some who felt that Severide working with his wife could be an issue. Severide has a lot of friends in high places so Lowen stopped by the firehouse to put the rumors to rest. He saw for himself that the firefighters were working together. They were running drills during their off-hours. He was one of Severide’s friends and even he said that his hands were tied here. If he had found an issue, he’d have been forced to report it. It might have cost Severide 51 as well.
Which is why a mistake on the job stood out so prominently. Marcus Bruke was one of the probies. He was finally getting along with his fellow probies when he took a risk on the job and Vasquez was forced to rescue him. Burke got yelled at afterwards because his risk had been a near fatal mistake in the making. He should’ve thanked Vasquez. He instead copped an attitude with the guy for making him look bad in front of his lieutenant. They got into a scuffle. Vasquez didn’t want this ruining the kid’s career so he took fault for what happened.
Kidd then sent Vasquez home. She wanted to write him up. Severide told her that he wasn’t going to ding him for a scuffle. He said that she also shouldn’t have sent him home without first running it past him. He couldn’t get another floater to cover nor could he allow the firehouse to appear as if it was in chaos. Kidd didn’t care about appearances. She was coming down on him when he suddenly snapped that she couldn’t keep getting her way. Severide has to think bigger picture now that he’s in charge.
They have too many eyes on them as it is. Kidd got Vasquez to come back. She also apologized if she ever made him feel like he couldn’t do the job because of her. Severide also apologized for what he said. He never meant to word it that way. He was in the wrong for snapping at someone and he owned up to it. Violet and Novak also realized what really happened to Anita. Anita went to the hospital to get a refill on her meds. She was sent to the facility because the hospital didn’t have a psychiatrist on call at the time. Then she went to the facilty and was put on a hold.
It was a billing scam. They’ve held onto her for two weeks claiming she was in crisis. They were actually holding onto her until her insurance stops paying out. Violet and Novak studied the Illinois Health Code. They found a loophole they could exploit to get Anita away from Valley Crest. They also asked the nice officer that wasn’t shouting to escort them and it allowed the paramedics to get Anita away from the scammers. It also resulted in Violet being brave enough to pass on Anita’s story about Valley Crest to her hot journalist friend, Jacob.
Severide later approved Kidd’s request because it was the right call to make. Even if it didn’t make him look good. The two of them were reconnecting as Mouch was doing a book reading. He wrote an erotic firehouse book that he was now publishing. He hadn’t been sure about the reading at first and was considering hiring an actor to play him, but Herrmann squashed that because he knew Mouch wouldn’t be happy unless he did it himself. And Mouch had been great.
THE END!
