Well, Akon is apparently relevant again. TMZ caught up with the 40-year-old rapper at LAX and asked him about his thoughts on cheating and polygamy in America.
“If America adopted that culture there would be less domestic disputes,” he told TMZ. “The average guy in the world has a main girl and they got a side chick. And then they got a jumpoff. At the end of the day as a male we are natural breeders by nature. We can’t even escape it if we wanted to.”
Although Akon was born in the US, he was raised in Senegal, Africa, where polygamy is heavily practiced, until he was seven. He has even been open about his own multiple wives.
“Marriage just solidifies a relationship between a man and a woman spiritually under God’s eyes. So, I can be spiritually attached to her, and still be spiritually attached to [another woman], and still be spiritually attached to [another woman].”
He also goes on to say that he doesn’t know one woman that can satisfy one man’s every need. “It’s impossible” because women aren’t built to mate and breed with multiple people like men are and that women need to take more time to understand men. “If they can do that I think things will work out better for us,” he said.
In 2007, one of Akon’s fiancés decided not to marry him because he revealed he was having another child with another wife. She knew of the other wives, but thought she was the only one he was sleeping with. Yea. OK. Anyways, she did defend his beliefs.
“It’s not Akon’s fault. He is only following his cultural and religious tradition and I had to decide whether I wanted to be a part of his customs,” she said in an interview.
I completely disagree with Akon. I, personally, have very strong views on monogamy and I don’t believe he speaks for all men. I believe respect, loyalty, and faithfulness happen to be extremely important in relationships. There are men in the world who are not cheaters and don’t have the need to “breed” with multiple women as Akon put it. I also have feeling that Akon would have a slight issue if his main girl or one of his side pieces had some side pieces of her own. However, to each its own; and if it works for you, then all the power to you.
