Now that everyone’s had a couple of days to get used to Charlie Hunnam dropping out of Fifty Shades of Grey, the debate has been raging about who is worthy enough to replace him as Christian Grey. The Hollywood Reporter has bandied some names about, including Jamie Dornan, Alexander Skarskgard, and Theo James. Out of all the contenders, Dornan seems the most suited and most likely to get the role. Skarsgarsd is definitely the most high-profile, but he’s probably as hesitant to accept the role as other A-list and B-list stars, and James actually has a pretty busy schedule for the next few months.
Dornan is best known for playing the Huntsman in Once Upon A Time, but he made his film debut opposite Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette. He’s since starred in The Fall and will also next be seen in Flying Home – but even then, his resume doesn’t contain the wealth of experience and work that was present on Charlie’s, or even Skarsgard’s. As many people have been saying for a while, the best that the producers are going to be able to do at such a short notice is to get the best actor they can – and right now, it doesn’t seem like any proper movie stars are interested.
So far, Dakota Johnson hasn’t been ousted as the female lead, but considering the important of the Christian Grey casting, it will be paramount that she have strong chemistry with whoever the studio wants in the role. In the end, neither Johnson nor Dornan have tons of experience, but maybe that will allow the two to break out after the film comes out, much like Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson after Twilight.
