THE VAMPIRE DIARIES returns to the CW tonight with a whole new episode called, “Monster’s Ball.” On tonight’s episode, Damon tries to make a deal with Silas. Silas’ demand that Damon commit an unthinkable act leads to a violent confrontation. Did you watch last week’s season premiere? We did and we recapped it right here for you.
On last week’s episode while Mystic Falls observed its traditional Remembrance Day to honor the dead, Damon and Elena tried to help Stefan through a confusing time, a task that ended up taking Elena on an emotional journey of her own. A worried Matt tried to figure out the reason behind his mysterious blackouts, and Caroline made an effort to get to know Jesse (guest star Kendrick Sampson) better. Jeremy made a startling confession that hits Damon hard. Finally, Dr. Maxfield (guest star Rick Cosnett) put a plan in motion that changed everything.
On tonight’s show on campus, Elena is touched by a sad and secretive student named Aaron (guest star Shaun Sipos). Elena and Damon attend the Whitmore Historical Ball dressed as Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. At the Ball, Elena shares a dance with Dr. Maxfield (guest star Rick Cosnett), who has a disturbing message for her. Caroline’s evening at the Ball takes her from happiness to heartbreak. Meanwhile, Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda) reveals her surprising history to Katherine, and Damon tries to make a deal with Silas. Silas’ demand that Damon commit an unthinkable act leads to a violent confrontation. Kat Graham and Zach Roerig also star. Kellie Cyrus directed the episode written by Sonny Postiglione.

Dr. Maxfield holds some blood under Jessie’s nose and he comes to and tries to snap at it. He won’t feed him. He gets a hand held recorder and takes notes on how his change is progressing and notes that he has been three days without feeding, that his fangs are coming in and that he has intense light sensitivity. Maxfield says he seems to be a “perfect candidate.”
For what Elena writes in her diary about Bonnie’s death. She’s back in school as Bonnie asked her to do. She says Stefan has it easiest because he can’t remember. She says that Caroline is distracted with Tyler. Elena’s current obsession is Maxfield and why he covered up the vampire murder. She wipes away tears. Bonnie is there missing her and Elena writes that she hopes Bonnie is there watching over her.
As Elena starts to call Damon, he’s there suddenly. He’s there to be her plus one to the costume ball. She gives him a smooch and heads to class. Caroline tells Tyler she registered him for class with a Sociology major. He tells her he doesn’t want to talk about it or where he’s been. She tells him he can make it up by taking her to the Whitmore Historical Ball. She wants them to go as Bonnie and Clyde and says even Stefan is going.
There’s a memorial to Megan and there’s a guy there crying over it. He tells Elena they knew each other growing up. He says it’s not exactly cool to mourn during fall rush. He doesn’t believe Megan killed herself either. She asks what he thinks happened and he tells her to put sunflowers at the memorial if she really liked her. He refuses to give her his name and stomps away.
Stefan calls Nadia and demands that she hand over Katherine. She tells him he’s impatient for an immortal. She tells him to mind control some people to help him find them. Then she mocks him because he’s lost his powers. He tells her he may have lost that talent but he’s learned about cell phone tracking.
Katherine tells her to just hand her over to Silas so he can have a sip of her blood to cure his immortality. Nadia gives K the bad news that he’ll need much more than a sip – he’ll need all of it.
Damon tells Jeremy that since they know a supernatural that wants to die, maybe they can balance out nature and bring Bonnie back when Silas dies.
Damon meets up with Silas and tells him he wants to work with him. Silas asks why he thinks he needs help. He needs to be mortal to die. If he’s mortal, he’s a witch.
Bonnie tells him she thinks Silas wants to destroy the other side completely. She says Qetsiyah bound the other side to something or someone – maybe the doppelganger – and that needs to be broken to seal the deal.
Silas says that Q will be at the costume ball that night – he saw her buying a costume.
Bonnie isn’t happy about this whole thing. Silas agrees that he can resurrect the witch with his death as long as Damon agrees to kill Stefan!
Nadia tells Katherine she’s been tailing her for 500 years and has some questions for her. She asks about the 1864 Mystic Falls vampire roundup. She asks if he she sold out Pearl and her daughter. K also tells her about chopping off a guy’s fingers. Nadia tells her she had herself turned into a vampire to be able to track her as an immortal. She says she did it because K killer her mother in Paris 1645. She says that K gave her mother to Klaus and he killed her. Nadia hauls Katherine out of the diner and K realizes Nadia is never going to let her go.
She grabs a wooden cane of someone’s booth and crams it into Nadia’s stomach! She runs out.
Bonnie argues with Jeremy about the consequences of abusing magic. He tells her nothing could be worse than seeing and hearing her and not being able to feel her. He begs her to let Damon try to bring her back.
At the costume ball, Caroline and Tyler come in looking good. Stefan is James Dean – doesn’t require much more than him looking sexy. He says he’s buzzed and asks C to dance with him. He takes her for a spin while Tyler goes to get them drinks.
Damon is there as Henry VIII and Elena as Anne Boleyn. He asks her to dance and she’s whiny and he asks what’s the deal. She’s feeling guilty about Bonnie dying while she was having fun with Damon and not aware that her bestie had died. She says she won’t let Megan’s death fall through the cracks too.
She sees Megan’s mystery friend and goes to find out more. She asks his name again and he wants to know why she knows. She asks if he killed Megan and he says of course not – he says that everyone around him dies – he says he has the worst case of survivor’s guilt because friends and family have all died. She compels him to answer and then compels him again to forget her questions. He says is name is Aaron. He says he’ll see her around and walks away.
Qetsiyah walks in all done up as Cleopatra. She spies Stefan and heads over. She tells him in her day open bar meant ceramic jugs of Venetian wine. He doesn’t recognize her and she reminds him she’s Tessa/Qetsiyah and he says – you’re the one who wiped out my memory. She offers him an apology drink.
Damon drags her away from him and into another way. Silas walks up and says – hello me. Then Damon breaks Stefan’s neck!
[8:57:54 PM] Rachel Rowan: Turns out Damon killing Stefan restored his mental powers. He takes off Stefan’s jacket so he can go back in and chat up Tessa on the QT. Damon thinks she’ll be suspicious but Silas says his face is the one she loves. They flirt and start shooting tequila together. She tells him how much she loves bacon too. He compliments her and they go to dance. She seems to have no idea which doppelganger she’s with.
Caroline asks Tyler if he wants to ditch the party and try out the handcuffs that came with their costumes. He says he didn’t come back just to get her in bed.
Silas asks Tessa why she’s at a college costume ball. He asks if it reminds her of the wedding where she was stood up. She says he shouldn’t know that and he says he asked about her. He tells her maybe part of her still loves him. He reveals that he’s Silas. She’s shocked but he’s able to compel her. He asks her where the anchor is and she says she doesn’t know. She tells him the gypsies hid it after they killed her. He asks why she’s there and she says there’s a talisman of hers someone here at the historical society. With it she can find the anchor. He tells her to get busy finding it and compels her to forget that they talked about this. She forgets he’s Silas and goes off in search of her artifact.
Silas gets a crushing pain in his head. Stefan is coming to and it’s shutting down Silas’ powers! Stefan realizes Damon broke his neck and pumped him full of vervain. Damon says it’s not about him – it’s about getting Bonnie back. Damon knocks Stefan out and Silas gets his powers back plus a text that says – Hurry up.
Katherine finds Nadia struggling for life in the alley. She tells her she missed her heart on purpose. K asks why she made up the fake story about her mother. She says she knew Nadia was lying. K lodges the stake further in and Nadia says she did kill her mother in England in 1492. She says she hung her mother and made it look like a suicide. She tells her that her name is Nadia Petrova and you are my mother. OMG! How did Katherine get a kid?
[9:18:31 PM] Rachel Rowan: Elena runs into Maxfield. He’s dressed as Dr Jekyll (oh the irony). She asks if it would be inappropriate to dance with a student. He says they will never be teacher and student so it’s okay. She asks why he lied on the death certificate. He says that he didn’t think her parents would like to know that she was killed by a vampire. She asks what he knows about vampires. He tells her there are people there watching her and her friends and that she needs to pack up and move back to Mystic Falls before something happens.
Tyler tells Caroline that he can’t be there at college. He’s still mad that Klaus killed his mother and says he has to go after him and wants to find a way to destroy his life the way he destroyed Tyler’s. She says for someone who hates Klaus he sure sounds a lot like him.
Upstairs, Tessa is searching through a room of artifacts. She finds her talisman. She says a chant while she holds it. Silas comes in and she asks Stefan if he came to see the show. He collapses with a head cramp. Damon asks Stefan if he’s awake and creeps closer. He taps his face and gets no response. Stefan lunges at him and then snaps Damon’s neck. He asks how it feels.
Silas collapses and Tessa runs to him and calls him Stefan. Then Stefan is in the room and tells her it’s Silas and that he’s working with Damon and lying to her. She tells him he won’t be around to find out where the anchor is. She holds out her hand and chants. He tells her she can’t kill him and that she loves him. She says she did and that now she’s going to break his. She reaches into his chest and grabs it. She tells him she’s going to crush his heart so his blood can’t flow and he’ll rot from the inside out. She says the whole world will see him for what he is – a cold gray hideous monster. And that’s what he looks like when she’s done with him!
Maxfield stops Aaron on the way out. OMG – Aaron is his son! He makes him hand over his car keys. Aaron asks for money for a cab since he manages his trust. Maxfield tells him to stay away from Elena – he saw them talking. He tells him to be safe.
Elena comes in and sees the husk of Silas at Damon’s feet. She says – isn’t that a good thing and Damon says no – that it’s a very bad thing.
Nadia wakes – stake gone – all healed up. She tells Katherine she was a fool for not running. K says she’s good at running from bad guys. She says the one outstanding question was where Nadia was in 1498. She says by then she had escaped and made her way back to Bulgaria. She says she searched everywhere for Nadia. She’s shocked that K came back for her. She tells her daughter that it’s nice to meet her.
Tyler is packing when Caroline comes in. She tells him she decided that she’s not going to talk to him about it. She says she won’t wait for him if he leaves. She begs him to love her more than he hates Klaus and he says he can’t. She tells him if he takes one more step that they are done for good. He’s teared up but he walks out on her! Caroline is crushed instantly by grief.
Elena tells Damon about Maxfield knowing about vamps. They have the desiccated Silas in the living room and discuss that he needs to eat K to become a witch and then they can use mortal Silas to bring back Bonnie.
There’s a knock and it’s Katherine. She’s thrilled to see Silas looking all corpsy. She says now she has all the time in the world. She laughs and says she beat death again. Damon lunges at her and she screams for mercy and tells him she doesn’t want to die but he feeds her to Silas. Once he’s had some, Silas’s hand comes up to grab her looking all nice and healthy. She collapses to the floor and Silas should be human now.
They hear a heart beating. They are amazed that Katherine’s heart is still beating. Damon says – takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Katherine opens her eyes to see Damon and Elena and asks if she’s in hell.
