Bates Motel airs tonight on A&E with an all new March 16, season 3 episode 2 called “The Arcanum Club” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Dylan [Max Thieriot] and Caleb [Kenny Johnson] meet a new neighbor.

On tonight’s episode as per the A&E synopsis, “Norman and Norma fixate on Annika’s disappearance. Norma learns that the Arcanum Club really is. Dylan and Caleb encounter a new neighbor.”

Annika Johnson checked in at the Bates Motel but she never checked out. So the morning after her unfortunate ride with Norman, Norma went to go check on her guest.
However she never found Annika. She saw the girl’s room from the window and saw the bed hadn’t been slept it yet she also saw Annika’s car out front. So Norma did the one thing she dreaded most. She confronted her son, Norman.
And Norman came up with one excuse after another. Annika was an escort and he implied she might have run into trouble with some of her clientele. But all the same Emma last saw their missing guest driving away with Norman. Hence, if Norman wanted to be believed he then had to verify his story.
He claimed he dropped Annika off and so he took his mother to where he supposedly did it. And yet no one at the restaurant remembered seeing her. So Norma then tried to drop it. She was going to give up looking for Annika who she somehow talked herself into believing was at a party somewhere. And in the process she was also going to ignore the fact Norman described Annika in the past tense.
Deep down, Norma simply didn’t want to know and Emma was the only one that remained oblivious. She just thought it was really nice of Norma to be so concerned about a guest.
That’s why she later talked Norma into letting them both into Annika’s room. You know to find evidence of where she could possibly be. And at the time, it was the only way Norma could keep Emma from notifying the police.
But seeing the woman’s room only put her more on edge!
Sheriff Romero was finally checking out of the motel and Norma told him before he let that he made her feel safer while he was them. And honestly appeared like she meant. As if without him, she didn’t feel entirely safe just depending on her son Norman.
Or on any son for that matter. Seeing as Dylan hasn’t exactly checked in since he went into business with his father/ uncle.
So, once again, Norma was on her own and after finding an invitation in Annika’s room – she decided to go to the party the other woman was supposed to attend. And in that, Norman turned out to be right. Annika was a prostitute.
It seems she was being paid to “attend” an orgy – something Norma witnessed firsthand.
Although Norma didn’t get in with Annika’s invitation. Apparently a password for the event was needed and she didn’t know it so she had to sneak in over fence just to find out what was going on. And what she saw was a bunch of women having sex with each other as men in tuxes watched.
And she would have kept on watching in hopes of seeing Annika there if she hadn’t been interrupted by the Sherriff.
He claimed he was speaking with bigwigs away from all the excitement but Norma was so concerned about Annika – she didn’t question Romero too hard. And after she was caught, she promised to leave if Romero would continue looking for the girl she described.
She told him Annika has been gone for two days and that Norman was the last one to see her. Yet being so truthful with him might have been a mistake on her part. Because the body of a young woman was eventually found in the lake and nothing can protect Norman if the body ends up being Annika.
