Caroline hears a noise, wakes and goes to check on her mom. Liz is sleeping soundly but Caroline hears a crash and goes downstairs to investigate. She sees the guy from the hospital – Colin. He asks what she did to him and collapses to the floor at her feet. She calls Stefan and he comes over. He asks how Colin found her if she compelled him to forget her.

Stefan wonders if the blood on the guy is all his own and if the house has been signed over to her. Stefan opens the window and the sun starts to burn Colin. He closes it and they realize quickly that she gave him her blood and then he died so now he’s a vampire and a very sick one. Elena is running around grabbing up stuff so she can go to her volunteer job at the hospital.

Damon comes in and she shows him the new daylight ring Jo made for her. He’s worried her magic isn’t good enough and that Elena might fry in the sun. She tells him to keep an eye on Kai and re-drug him if he starts to wake up. Damon asks Elena to go out to dinner and a French movie. She says she doesn’t speak French and he says they’ll sit in the balcony and throw popcorn on the hipsters.

She asks if this is a date they’ve already been on and tells him no cheating like that. She says they need to start from scratch and tells him what time he can pick her up from work. Liv snuggles with Tyler in bed and they’re talking about spring break plans. There’s a knock and Tyler says to ignore it but she panics. It’s her dad. She tells him to get his clothes on and hide.

She says she thought they were meeting for dinner and he hands her a birthday present. Tyler hides behind the door but takes it all in. Jo is at the hospital and tries to magic a plant back to life when no one is looking. Elena sees and asks if she should call time of death on the poor thing. Stefan comes in then with Colin and says they need help.

Later, Jo shows them Colin’s head scans she ordered from Duke. The vampire blood sped up the cancer, killed him and made him a vampire. Damon asks why they’re listening to this sad story and then Liz is there and says it’s because Caroline gave her the same blood last night so that’s what’s awaiting her. Stefan finds Elena outside the hospital and she asks if there’s news.

Stefan says not yet and she asks if he knew that Caroline was going to give her blood to her mom. Elena says Stefan is 165 and worked as a paramedic and should have done more research or waited a day before they tried it on Liz. Stefan says Caroline had so much hope in her eyes when she thought her mom could be saved and he didn’t want to take it from her.

Caroline is there and hears but says Jo has an idea. Jo says they may be able to stabilize Liz with a full transfusion of human blood. Damon mocks this over simple solution but she says it’s more than a medical problem, it’s a magical problem. Tyler asks Liv why she lied about her birthday and she says she didn’t want him worrying about the merge.

Luke joins them and he’s in a tie and suit for dinner. Tyler asks them to let him talk to their dad but they tell him they’ve got it covered – they’re going to convince their dad that Jo can face the trials and beat Kai. Elena finds Damon and says no word yet. He says she may not remember this but he and Liz are pretty close and she’s pretty tolerable for a human.

Stefan finds Caroline ranting about the broken coffee machine and she says she really screwed up by trying to fix something she wasn’t qualified to fix. He says she’s an optimist. They hear a noise from Colin’s room and go find him impaling himself over and over with an IV stand trying to kill himself. He says he’s in agony because he can hear his tumors growing. She says she wants to help him.

He says if she wants to help him, help him die. Colin collapses and we see Damon standing there holding his heart. He says – wish granted. Damon tells her the transfusion didn’t work and she didn’t just kill poor Colin, she killed her – Stefan tells him not to say it but Caroline says it’s true, she killed her mom. She runs out devastated that their one hope is gone.

Elena tries again to call Caroline and leaves a message asking her to call or come back. Liz wakes and Elena is there. She asks how she’s feeling and she says like a human pin cushion. She asks if it worked and Elena says they’re not sure yet. Liz tells her not to lie to sick people – she says it’s bad karma. Elena says it didn’t work and that she’s sorry.

She asks how Caroline is and she ran out to get food. Liz chastises her for lying again and she tells her that Caroline just ran off. Liz says her daughter won’t forgive herself for this and Elena promises to find her. Stefan meets Caroline where she’s picking out funeral flowers for her mom. She tells him not to say things to make her feel better because she doesn’t deserve it.

He says she should be with her mother while she’s still alive. Caroline says doing this is something that she’s good at. Stefan says she took a risk out of love. He says she did make her sicker but she can’t bury her head in the sand. She says she doesn’t know what to say to her but he says to just go be with her. She says she can’t. He says his mom got sick when he was young and he avoided her.

He says he would pick flowers for her or walk to town to buy her favorite tea. He says he was just afraid to see her like that. He says his dad then sent her away and she died. He says he would give anything to have one more day with her. She asks what if her mom can forgive her and he says Liz doesn’t think there’s anything to forgive and just wants her there with her.

He takes her hand and walks her out of the flower shop. Liv and Luke tell their dad they want to consider other options besides merging. He asks if they want the coven to die out if he dies. They tell him that he’s young and healthy and that Jo can beat him and with Kai on ice, they have time to make sure. Their dad explains that their souls will unite.

Luke says he will win – he’s stronger and they know it. He says he can’t kill his sister. Tyler is messing with Kai when Damon catches him at it. Damon says that Kai is a psycho magic sucking freak and he can’t just let him walk out with him just as an insurance policy to protect his GF. But then he lets Tyler go, calls him a moron and says he could kiss him right now.

He shoots Tyler up with some drugs to keep him out of the way then calls Liv who he refers to as Twinderella. He says he needs to ask her dad one question about a plan that may help them win. She hands the phone over. He reminds her dad who he is and asks if the planetary alignment today would work for the twin merge and says he’d better do it ASAP because his psycho kid is about to be loose in town hell-bent on merging with Jo.

Kai wakes woozy and Damon tells him that all the magic he sucked up drained out while he was knocked out. Kai says he won’t trust him and Damon says he needs a magic siphon and Kai is the only one he knows. He steps over Tyler and tells Damon they need to discuss his fee. He takes Kai to the hospital and Elena tells him she’ll rip his head off if he screws this up.

Liz tells him to get on with it and says listening to him talk makes her want to die. Kai puts his hand on Liz. Jo comes in and freaks out. Kai says he’s busy and will be with her in a jiffy. Damon hauls Jo out of there and he says he asked her if the magic was killing Liz and she says it was. She asks what the price is and Damon says that Kai wants to merge tonight.

Kai finishes taking all the magic out of her but then Liz starts to have a heart attack. Elena asks Kai to help but he won’t. Jo tells Damon she can’t merge with Kai tonight, she’s not ready. He says he knows that and says it’s all been taken care of. She asks what he did but then Damon goes down because Kai snaps his neck with magic. Kai asks if she should be running but she says she’s done.

He grabs her hand and hauls her out of the hospital. The twins dad wait in the alley behind the restaurant. They come out and ask what he’s doing. He tells them that he’s very proud of them. He tells them he’ll think about what they said and holds out a hand to each of them. He grabs their hands and then starts chanting. Luke is shocked and tells his dad he’ll kill Liv if they merge.

He says he has no choice because Kai is on the loose. Tyler shows up and tackles their dad and stops the ritual. Luke starts to run off. Liv asks where he’s going and he asks her to trust him and says he’ll be back. He jogs away. Their dad is knocked out but alive. Kai drags Jo out to a place on campus where they can see the stars. He says he’s been thinking about how she screwed him over while he was in solitary for the last 18 years.

He asks if she has any closing remarks. She calls him a parasite and says she’s going to destroy his life like he destroyed hers. They clasp hands and she chants. He takes up the chant and the merging spell has begun. The wind picks up but then Jo conks out. Kai asks what Luke did and he says he gave her a knock on the head so he can merge with Kai instead.

Kai starts laughing and says they’re not twins and that’s not how it’s supposed to works. Luke says thanks to his time out in the magic penalty box, they’re the same age. He says he’d do anything to save his sister’s life so they’re going to give it the old college try. Kai says no thanks and Luke chants and draws him over. Luke asks if he’s scared to play chicken with someone who might beat him.

Kai says it’s Luke’s funeral. Elena is giving Liz CPR but it’s not working. Luke and Kai chant the merging spell. Jo starts to come to and calls out to tell Luke to stop. Both Kai and Luke fall back and collapse. Jo tries to wake Luke up. The doctor is there and tries to restart Liz’s heart. Liz is someplace else packing for a journey. She calls out to Caroline that she’s leaving and asks if she wants to say goodbye.

The doctor stops and Damon tells him to keep working but the doctor says she’s gone. Damon tells him to get out. Elena starts back with CPR and Damon tells her she’s gone. Caroline runs over and tries to wake her up. Liz is heading downstairs with her suitcase and finds Caroline at the door. She turns her and sees Caroline with blood on her face. She gasps and wakes up. She’s alive. It’s a miracle of sorts.

Elena walks out of the room followed by Damon. Elena grabs Damon up in a kiss. He says he thought she wanted to start over but she says life is too short immortal or not. She says she doesn’t want to waste another minute and he kisses her again. Liz tells Caroline she has to stop beating herself up after she fills her in on the magic siphon thing.

Caroline asks about her putting the house in her name and her mom says she did it a couple of weeks ago just in case. Caroline says she’s not ready for that and Liz says she’ll try to stick around for as long as she can. They hug. Stefan comes in with coffee and hands it to her. Liz says she would give Caroline a million dollars for a decaf latte and Caroline goes.

Liz tells Stefan that miracle cure won’t work. She tells Stefan that when she’s gone, Caroline will need him to help her move on with her life and make her smile. She asks him to promise her that he’ll do it. He takes her hand and promises. Caroline lurks outside the door listening. She cries. Jo tries to wake Luke up. Damon comes over and says he’s glad she’s still alive so Ric won’t kill him.

She says Luke tried to merge with Kai and it’s all Damon’s fault. She tries again to get him to wake up. Damon offers to give him some blood. She says it’s up to them and says whoever wakes up is the winner. Liv keeps trying to call Luke but he’s not answering. Her dad finally comes to and asks what has Luke done. Luke’s eyes are open but he doesn’t seem to be seeing.

Liv’s dad tells her that he can feel that Luke is gone. He says that he merged with Kai and Kai won. He says they have to run but she says she doesn’t believe him and isn’t going anywhere with him. He tells her that if she changes her mind, she knows where to find the coven. Jo tells Damon that Luke is gone. Kai says you win some, you lose some. Then he says – except for me, I always win. Damon starts to go at him but then Kai is gone in a blink.
