The Young and the Restless spoilers document all things Y&R. Since soap operas are a very subjective form of entertainment, it can be challenging to choose the Emmy-worthy steamer in any one year. So, while Y&R didn’t capture top honors as the Outstanding Drama Series, two of its cast members (Gina Tognoni, Outstanding Lead Actress, and Steve Burton, Outstanding Supporting Actor) took home a statue. A number of other fine Y&R actors who were rightfully nominated weren’t as fortunate to be honored.
Jess Walton (Jill) lost out to Tognoni. This Y&R veteran is consistently outstanding, but wasn’t a regular member of the cast throughout 2016. So based on that point alone, it’s fair to place Tognoni ahead of Walton. Separately, Tognoni’s work was also rightly honored.
Peter Bergman (Jack) and Kristoff St. John (Neil) were nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. Jack’s roller coaster turn from victim to vindictive heel afforded Bergman meaty scripts, which was something St. John lacked in 2016.
It’s arguable that Bergman could have won based upon the storylines he was given, but St. John has often had far deeper material to work with in past years. Jack’s tortuous realization that his marriage had ended because of Phyllis and Billy’s (Jason Thompson) relationship proved to be highly compelling. Neil spent the bulk of his year playing off the countless fights Hilary (Mishael Morgan) and Devon (Bryton James) had with each other.
Stacy Haiduk (Patty) and Kelly Sullivan (Sage) were nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. Haiduk is one of the strongest character actors in Y&R’s history. Kimberlin Brown (Sheila) will likely always top this list, but Patty’s impact on Genoa City is massive when the great Haiduk appears. Haiduk was robbed of an Emmy.
Sullivan’s character was underwritten. While likeable, Sage basically served as a plot vehicle which allowed Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) to brood into and through the Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) reveal.
Hunter King (Summer) and Alyvia Alyn Lind (Faith) were nominated in the Outstanding Younger Actress category. King is a multiple-time Emmy Award winner. Her efforts have polarized portions of the audience. However, a clear-eyed take on that bulk reaction highlights likely jealously factors, as King’s strong physical appeal appears to elicit insecurities that seem to exist in the minds of some audience members.
King was likely nominated this past year due to her earned reputation for solid work, as her scripts weren’t particularly distinguished. In contrast, Lind’s nomination was fully deserved.
Rivaling Camryn Grimes’ days as Cassie, Lind’s Faith is consistently outstanding. Child actors don’t always steal scenes in daytime, based upon the type of work they’re offered. But Lind’s efforts simultaneously elicit current applause, while also offering a vivid glimpse of what will likely be an enduring acting career.
