General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that Max Gail’s run as Mike Corbin finally wrapped up on Thursday, September 17 – and it was the end of a heartbreaking yet beautiful journey. After Gail stepped into the role of Mike in 2018, General Hospital kicked off an Alzheimer’s storyline that would bring some difficult moments for Mike, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and their family.
GH fans watched Mike’s slow decline, which led to him landing at the Turning Woods memory care facility and ultimately passing away. However, it was all Mike’s highs and lows in between Gail’s debut and departure that really wowed viewers.
Gail picked up a Daytime Emmy in 2019 for his amazing work as Mike – and rightly so! The General Hospital actor gave a brilliant performance of a father trying to reconnect with his son – all while dealing with this Alzheimer’s diagnosis and marching toward his inevitable fate.
In the end, deceased Courtney Matthews (Alicia Leigh Willis) greeted Mike and invited her dad to go into the light with her. As Gail took his final GH bow, Mike had some heartfelt parting words for Sonny that almost seemed meant for fans, too. Mike thanked Sonny for being his boy and offered some advice on how to remember him.
“Don’t think of me as the guy in the bed,” Mike insisted. “Think of me as the father who came to his son for help.” That’s undoubtedly how viewers will think of Mike now that he’s joined Courtney in the great beyond.
It was a powerful conclusion to a story that meant a lot to viewers, especially those with loved ones who faced the same fate as Mike. On Twitter, Max Gail had some touching words for his costars, who also gave some incredible performances as Mike’s time on the ABC soap wound down.
After Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos) sent out a tweet expressing love and gratitude for her GH family, here’s what Gail had to say: “I do too. What a magnificent experience to work with you all. And at the center of that, from the first moment, thank you Mauricio, for your presence and openness…and Laura…and on through the whole circle.”
Plenty of General Hospital fans have been tweeting Gail to praise him for his fantastic portrayal of Mike. One GH watcher asked what’s next – and Gail had the perfect response. “Life,” Gail said simply. Life will go on in Port Charles as well, but Mike certainly left a mark that won’t be forgotten.
