Meghan Markle’s Wedding Dress - How Much Did It Cost Compared To Other Royal Wedding Gowns?

British royals news reveals that Meghan Markle’s wedding gown was beautiful and understated, but that doesn’t mean it was inexpensive by any means. Of course, most wedding gowns for Royals tend to be off-the-charts expensive, but one wonders how Meghan’s gown fared cost-wise relative to other Royal wedding gowns in recent memory.

Of course, many of us recall Princess Diana’s memorable wedding gown with the seemingly un-ending 25-foot train. Diana’s gown was a well-guarded secret until royal watchers got a glimpse of her on the day of the wedding, and the volume of the dress made it hard to fit into the carriage that day. The gown was designed by Elizabeth and David Emmanuel and cost about 150,000.

So how does that compare to Kate Middleton’s gown? Kate’s gown was Victorian-inspired Alexander McQueen ensemble, designed by Sarah Burton. Kate is said to have worked closely with Sarah Burton on the gown – it had a much shorter train than Princess Diana’s and a sleeker look, but the lace appliqué work was intricate and likely contributed to the cost of the gown, which was approximately £500,000.

And then there is Meghan Markle’s wedding gown, which was designed by Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy. Meghan and Waight Keller worked together to design Meghan’s gown, which was absolutely timeless and elegant. The designer stated that the dress was intended to “convey modernity through sleek lines and sharp cuts” all while paying homage to the history of Givenchy.

Interestingly, Meghan’s bridal gown included no lace, which may have been what made her gown so relatively inexpensive, especially compared to Kate Middleton’s gown, for example. Meghan’s gown cost approximately £100,000.

Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention another famous royal wedding gown for comparison here. The Royal bride with the most expensive wedding gown ever happens to be Queen Letizia of Spain. At her 2004 wedding to King Felipe, she appeared in a gown costing a whopping £6 million. Queen Letizia’s gown was designed by the Royal courtier Manuel Pertegaz.

At any rate, it seems that Meghan Markle’s gown was relatively reasonable in terms of cost, even when you don’t factor in Queen Letizia’s outlier gown. What did you think of Meghan’s gown for her wedding to Prince Harry? Keep checking in with CDL for all your British royals news and updates.
