Tonight’s Chicago PD episode reveals Detective Kim Burgess was still seeing a therapist. She was finally working on her PTSD. She just hasn’t reached a point where she’s fine with asking for help much less accepting it and so that’s something she needed to work on. Burgess was driving home after her appointment when she heard of a possible robbery in the nearby area.

She called it that she was responding. She made it there too late to stop a brutal assault, but she did see the two men fleeing on foot and what they were wearing. They also had guns. They shot at Burgess. They hadn’t shot the bodega owner. They chose to beat him to a pulp and that wasn’t the only questionable thing they did.

Burgess had her team come in. They searched nearby cameras trying to map out the path of the thieves. One of the cameras even picked up that one of thieves was in fact a woman. She took her mask off and she and her partner had sex out in the open. The police have video of that as well. Burgess later had forensics comb the area.

They tested the hair they found from the female victim and it was revealed that her name is Ruby Bertinelli. She didn’t have a record. Her DNA was actually in the system from a rape kit she undergone some years back.

Burgess asked the forensics unit if that was legal. They in return said that it wasn’t illegal in the State of Illinois. Voight also agreed with those people that the DNA can be used to close a case.

It was just everyone else who felt bad about using it. But Voight reminded them of the bigger picture. Ruby was no longer a victim. She also hadn’t just hit one bodega. She’s hit five with her partner and she gets off on the violence. They were escalating the more they went on. And they needed to be stopped before they killed someone.

Burgess and the rest of Voight’s unit began looking for Ruby. They checked her last known address. She moved out of that place a couple of months ago and then they found her car. They went to the location of her car.

They were hoping to see Ruby get inside when they heard gunshots. Ruby and her boyfriend had been robbing another bodega. They were using their guns that time and so everyone in the area was running away. Which made it hard for them to track down the guy involved, but they did find Ruby.

Ruby was arrested. Only she wasn’t all there. Mentally, speaking. Ruby didn’t talk. She didn’t brag or show remorse. She just kept repeating a mantra over and over again like she was trying to deal with her newfound situation. Burgess looked into her. Ruby stopped posting on social media after she reported her rape. She just hid from the world and she later recanted her story with police. Something about that set off some alarm bells with Burgess. Burgess looked into the man that Ruby claimed raped her. And he matches the description of the other thief in these robberies.

Burgess went to Ethan Hanley’s home. They saw him and he saw them. He started firing at them before ultimately escaping. Their best bet at finding Ethan was Ruby. They tried to question Ruby and she refused to say a bad word against Ethan. She felt for sure that he loved her. She didn’t care that he ran and left her at that bodega. Ruby was so stuck on him that she was willing to deny he raped her. And so Burgess had to remind her how the love story really began with him grabbing her and threatening to kill her if she yelled for help or fought back.

Burgess took Ruby back to where the rape happened. She forced Ruby to admit the truth to herself. Ruby had to face the fact that she fell apart after her rape and that Ethan used that to further prey upon her. He got her to recant. He got her to help him with robberies. He was a bad guy. Burgess reminding Ruby of that had helped Ruby come around. She agreed to help the cops lure out Ethan. They talk over a gaming system. She told him to meet her up at the train station and there the police were waiting for Ethan.

Ethan tried to turn it all around on Ruby when he was caught. He claimed they shouldn’t trust anything Ruby said because she gets easily confused and she wasn’t all there, but they ignored what he said. They told him to put his hands up and he instead chose to reach for his gun. And so they had to kill him to stop him from hurting anyone else.

Ruby will still go to prison and maybe she’ll finally get the treatment there.

Burgess had another appointment with her therapist. She invited Ruzek along like the therapist suggested yet something happened in that session that had Ruzek and Burgess tearing each other’s clothes off the moment they got back to their house.

THE END!
